Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1244: Chapter 681: Victory Assured (2)

For instance, he had heard of the Lord’s theories on hygiene and health, as well as nutrition theories.

He was in his growing years, eating more meat to build his body, drinking milk to supplement calcium and grow taller, while also needing to supplement nutrition during training, otherwise he would deplete his body.

He planned to study while exercising, aiming to get admitted, having heard that literacy earns you extra points; even if he didn’t get into the military, he could become a policeman, and if not that, at the very least secure some civil service job.

As for the money issue, he had a plan, running this route for a profit margin, as the authorities were prohibiting large-scale commercial activities but not small-scale ones.

Even though one trip wouldn’t earn much, it was a form of physical training, and one trip a day would be enough to sustain a living.

He could even buy ammunition to practice shooting; military requirements and training items were clearly listed, and shooting ability was part of the evaluation, which is why he kept the musket.

Even though the route was under official control, if you carried goods alone without any confidence you could easily become a target; you might not win with a gun in hand, but the sound would alert more people and deter any possible Looters.

What is called a life plan? This is it.

Compared to those guys who squandered money as soon as they got it, the young man spent the night pondering his future, ready to take action.

And at this moment, those few people who originally separated claiming to go work suddenly came looking for him, shouting loudly.

”Hey, boss! Have you heard?”

”Yeah, it’s spread all over town, something big happened.”

”What is it?” The young man had spent the whole night thinking, just waking up, really not knowing much about the outside world.

But after hearing their explanation, he couldn’t help but chuckle and ask a rhetorical question.

”What’s it got to do with us?”

Indeed, just one sentence left them in silence.

Of course, the young man knew why these people sought him out and explained straightforwardly.

”I know what you want to do, but think about it, do you have the qualifications to participate in the battles of those bigwigs.”

”Let me remind you, the bigger the treasure, the more powerful people it attracts, and they’re not just some Looters, they’re strong like the Hamlet Enforcers, who could crush us with one finger.”

With such a simple sentence, he explained the danger beneath the rumors; the Looters were already scary to them, let alone enforcers who could easily crush them in front of everyone.

Those who were so enthusiastic just now began to calm down, unwilling to relive that frightened feeling.

”This is not our world...” The young man noticed their change and couldn’t help but sigh.

He couldn’t sleep at all last night, tossing and turning, finally understanding a truth: without power, no amount of wealth belongs to you.

This is why he decided to join Hamlet; joining the military was the simplest way for ordinary folks like him to gain power.

He fully understood the harshness of the military, but he had enough of being bullied and powerless to fight back, willing to die in battle rather than experience it again.

At least if he died in battle, the Lord would take care of his family, not a myth but a fact he had witnessed with his own eyes.

If last night’s separation was on the material level, then today’s reaction to the rumors showed their mental gap.

It’s a pity no one cared; they were just specks of dust under the era, trying unsuccessfully to cling to that ”big mountain,” perhaps blown away by those big shots to somewhere unknown, utterly beyond their control.

But who knew, Hamlet itself was also formed by specks of dust like them, they were still young, still had a chance, to seize that glimmer of hope...

However, in the small town, someone else had a different interpretation of these inexplicable rumors.

”It must be another conspiracy by that Lord!”

The Mendicant Monk slammed a fist on the table, hitting so hard the cup even jumped up.

The two from the Church spent a long time wandering outside yesterday, but the Skeletons out there were really too weak.

Even with the Friar’s skills, without the wounded, they were of no use, they couldn’t exactly break a few guys’ legs.

On the contrary, the Candlelight Priest hammered all day, slaying nearly a thousand Skeletons, reviving the glory of the Church.

The Mendicant Monk could only transform into the Monk Scavenger, picking up jewels from the Skeletons to finally get a piece of bread.

But early today, they received such news, now who the hell cares about the Church, better not stop us from treasure hunting.

”That Taboo Legion did appear and headed directly for the ruins, there’s no faking that.”

The Candlelight Priest shared what he’d seen, and Brother Martin could only helplessly explain.

”The Church began investigating matters of the Ancient Empire Legion over a hundred years ago; they were just guys cursed by Undead sorcery.”

”For long periods, they sought any news about Necromancers worldwide, wholly to find the ones who cast the spell on them for revenge.”

”Coming here was because the ruins held many abominable creatures caused by necromancy, not for the long-gone Ancient Empire heritage.”

The Mendicant Monk was also part of the Church’s upper echelon, privy to some secrets, aware of why the cursed, undead Legion took action.

How they got the information is a mystery, but as long as the Legion lives, someone is bound to be unlucky.

Martin roughly understood that his bodyguard partner’s thinking was a bit simple, making it clear with a conclusion.

”That claim of the Ancient Empire’s treasure in the ruins is completely impossible, spread by some to draw more people here.”

The Candlelight Priest was silent for a moment before speaking up.

”So even the Legion received news of the abominable and came to the ruins, why haven’t our people come?”

The remark hit home, even Brother Martin didn’t know what to say for a moment.

Could it be the Church also saw through the ruins as a trap, so they dumped the two of us, unwelcome by others, here?

Brother Martin had to change the subject, ”But the hype around this event is also an opportunity for us, grabbing some experts on this occasion, when we return to the Church, our voice would hold more sway, allowing us to drive internal reform, saving the Church from those depraved fellows.”

”Will we win?”

”We will.”

They were the same type of people, witnessing the Church’s corruption and striving to change it, having come this far had paid too much, yet also feeling powerless, as the opponent was no one else but the Church itself.

The internal disputes were also about interests, outsiders had no idea how brutal and bloody it was, but Martin still was that Martyr who dared step into the Holy Flame.

”Let’s go, we should show some presence now, otherwise many would forget the power of the Church.”

The Mendicant Monk volunteered for action, unlike previously lingering along the perimeter requested by the Candlelight Priest.

Last night’s failure proved the usual lowly routes used by the Church had been taken by the Lord, this time he intended to breach the ruins, as only the experts who reached deep inside could be of use when befriended.

Nothing more to say, the Priest wasn’t sure of the Monk’s plan, but had already grasped Shield and Warhammer, ready to battle at any moment...

The Legion marching towards the ruins had no idea about the commotion their appearance caused, though even if they knew, there would be no reaction, they had but one target.

”Ahead is the ruins, filled with various abominable things, of course, we must be wary of lurking evil cultists and Necromancers, along with others...”

The pathfinder finally breathed a sigh of relief upon reaching this point, though the Legion showed no hostility or threat, the pressure was indeed significant.

The Legion ignored the man’s words, marching coldly towards the ruins between dusk and dawn...
