Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1105: Chapter 612: A Wonderful Accident

Grendel seemed indifferent to the hope she harbored, speaking with a hint of boastfulness and desire to take credit.

”A wine taster for Hamlet Winery, doing quality checks for their products, just sitting and drinking wine every day—it’s an easy job with decent pay, and you can drink for free. Who wouldn’t want this position?

I begged the Lord for a long time for this job, speaking about your wine tasting skills, your opinions about [Maiden’s Dream] and its potential improvements, only for him to finally agree.

More importantly, this job doesn’t require much contact with others, making it ideal for keeping your identity hidden.”

Sofia’s heart, which she had just set at ease, was now back up again, her smile frozen in place.

Grendel noticed Sofia’s shifting emotions but understood something deep within. The last shred of feeling vanished.

She didn’t necessarily distrust Lance, but emotionally, she still harbored some hope for Sofia in her heart.

If Sofia showed a positive reaction to the wine taster position, Grendel wouldn’t particularly care about the past, regardless of Sofia’s intentions.

But the fact was, the woman before her showed clear reluctance.

As Lance said, she’s a person full of ambition, and Grendel had indeed been deceived by her.

But unfortunately, the next opponent won’t be Grendel, but that man.

Thinking of this, Grendel’s face lit up with a bright smile.

Noticing her silence, Grendel took the initiative to speak.

”What? It seems like you don’t like it?”

”No, it’s just that I don’t handle alcohol well—I topple over after one glass so I’m afraid I’ll mess up the job.”

Sofia seemed to come around, explaining helplessly, but a trace of bitterness was faintly visible.

She hadn’t expected that a mere display of skill back then would sow the seeds for today. Had she known, she wouldn’t have tried to show off.

But Sofia didn’t seem to realize that it was precisely those words back then that attracted Grendel’s attention.

One can only say fate is interesting, weaving connections early on that often go unnoticed until suddenly awakening in a certain moment.

”No worries, wine tasting doesn’t involve chugging, nor is it an everyday thing. It’s about sampling among batches to verify quality. Normally, you can research how to improve brewing techniques and even mix your own preferred drinks.”

Grendel spoke casually, though her attention was clearly fixated on the flowers around.

Sometimes, ignoring is the scariest attitude because it signifies indifference.

However, Sofia still couldn’t bring herself to give up, having understood over recent times that the Lord often disappears, leaving Grendel in charge.

Though she was currently sidelined, as soon as the Lord vanished again, she’d have the opportunity to rise once more.

Thinking of this, Sofia felt slightly better, her eased emotions reflecting as a steady smile, and she went along with the conversation.

”It’s better to have a relaxed time, and when the Lord shifts duties away again, I can help Sister Dai’er with some work.”

The girl’s intimate, playful words failed to lower Grendel’s guard, and instead, displeasure showed on her face.

Grendel hadn’t intended to pay her attention, but this sentence was undoubtedly a probe.

The insinuation was nothing but a hint at the Lord’s absence, wishing to be included when temporary duties returned to her.

One wouldn’t give up, anticipating the Lord’s disappearance to snatch power. This person’s ambition was too much!

Grendel’s character was generally generous, yet Sofia touched upon Lance, crossing an intolerable boundary.

”Crack.”

Grendel’s indifferent face broke into an odd smirk, picking a flower to sway under her nose, fingers playing with its petals.

”I managed to escape, there’s no way I’m going back to work. If you’re free to help me garden, that’d be nice. I’m planning to open up another flower field over there.”

Grendel seemed to understand why Lance never exposed her. Exposing would mean elimination, but not exposing allowed for manipulation.

Got energy? First, help me farm two acres.

Sofia was momentarily speechless at this.

Your bucket and run philosophy means no work, leaving me without a backbone, doesn’t it?

Barbarian cannot conspire!

Sofia genuinely lamented—was she only meant to drink wine?

The two exchanged a few perfunctory words, Grendel feigning ignorance, and eventually it was glossed over.

”Flowers picked will never withstand the cold wind, even this is unclear...” Grendel murmured while watching Sofia leave.

The queer part was that the flower in her hand withered in a blink, but without glancing, she tossed it back into the soil.

........

After Lance returned, he swiftly dealt with affairs, and under the augmentation of a Demigod Physique, he seemingly transcended humanity.

His thoughts ran as fast as a person’s walk, while he seemed to fly.

After tackling the backlog, he even had time to focus on other matters.

Of course, that didn’t mean learning foreign languages with Amanda—it couldn’t be learned every day.

At present, Lance was in the sanatorium working with Paracelsus, researching materials collected from the Beast Lair.

”For convenience and without observing the entire evolution chain, we have to categorize the Flesh Devourer’s three forms as small, large, and gigantic.”
