Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1024: Chapter 571: Ovando in Chaos (Part 2)

The leader finally had to agree, which got the city defense force moving, but watching those guys, his heart was bleeding.

Damn it, once things settle down, those few leading troublemakers must be dealt with for daring to ask him for money?

If they have the life to take the money, let’s see if they have the life to spend it.

Just then, the leader’s lackey ran back.

”They’re attacking! The mob is attacking!”

The leader wasted no words and raised his fist high, shouting loudly.

”No more hesitation, we must strike hard and send them one by one to the heavens!”

”Oh!”

The city defense force didn’t feel fear upon hearing this. Instead, they got excited, showing they had experience dealing with mobs made up of common people.

The city defense force even preferred these occasional disturbances, for what other excuse would they have to demand money?

These missions weren’t too dangerous for them; just a bit of intimidation and a beating would make the mobs behave.

Under the leader’s urging, the city defense force left the camp and met the mob on the streets. At first, they didn’t think much of it until a volley of crossbow arrows took out about ten people, tearing an opening.

Before the city defense force could react further, ten or so people in crude, patched armor charged through, instantly breaking the weak city defense force front, entering and starting a massacre.

Previously, the attackers were weak from hunger and unarmed, forced into a desperate path. But now they faced gang mobs who had eaten, boasted high morale, and had good equipment.

When the savage bloodshed shattered the city defense force’s psychological edge, they immediately fell into a slump, crumbling almost instantly.

The leader hiding in the back didn’t expect this situation and panicked. He had no real combat experience; he was in his position because of money.

Indeed, the entire Ovando City’s city defense force had no experience, not even against bandits, only bullying ordinary people.

”Sir, run!”

”Go! Find the city lord! The guards can hold off these guys.”

The urging from his subordinates shook the leader’s resolve.

The leader barely hesitated before calling his lackey and fleeing, leaving the other city defense members behind.

Logically, over a thousand city defense members, even with many vacancies, were still over a thousand people. If they held the wave, they could bury these mobs under numbers.

These attackers were all ordinary people; a cut, a stab with a spear meant certain death.

But the leader’s flight erased the last desire to fight, causing an immediate collapse.

This abrupt defeat, faster than expected, left Vick somewhat unprepared, as he was ready for a hard fight.

Why did they run at first contact?

”Surrender and don’t be killed!”

Vick’s behaviour had accustomed the gang to stop the slaughter, but many genuine mob members couldn’t control their hands, attacking the city defense force wildly.

They might have suffered too much humiliation from these guys, or maybe their families were killed in previous protests by them, or perhaps they just wanted to vent their resentment.

Who cared now? Vick was busy leading the pursuit of the scattered forces.

”Surrender and don’t be killed!”

The lackey beside the leader witnessed the scene of people surrendering and fleeing with no one willing to fight hard.

The state of the subordinates mirrored the leader, who wouldn’t be much better.

Faced with the killers coming, the leader directly knelt down, howling: ”Don’t kill me! Don’t kill me!”

”Damn it!” Vick rushed over and kicked him aside, then signaled with a wave, ”Tie him up and parade him through the streets!”

Meanwhile, Vick yelled loudly towards the sky.

”The city defense force is defeated!”

This news directly dissipated the last strength of Ovando’s official power, prompting some observers to want to join the uprising.

The order was on the verge of collapse, and Vick immediately shouted out.

”The money and grain are in the rich district!”

This sentence made everyone realize something, causing a rush towards the rich district.

But Vick restrained his core forces, and now his subordinates couldn’t hold back.

”Boss, why aren’t we going?”

”Exactly, we worked hard; we can’t let them take everything.”

”Are you stupid?” Vick cursed, ”Those guys’ guards aren’t like these useless city defense forces. Want money? If they don’t chop you up, you’re lucky, let them go first.”

”The boss is smart!”

The subordinates then understood, the wealthy’s guards weren’t simple, let others die first.

”Go, chop down anyone trying to cause trouble amid the chaos. Damn it, have the guts to go after the rich folks, bullying ordinary people isn’t manly!”

Vick still posed as a figure of justice, which was why he could gather so many gang members; they fell for this act.

The huge group dispersed, and Vick led his people to maintain order, chopping anyone trying to make trouble.

He needed to hand over a complete Ovando to the Lord, not a chaotic ruin...

Meanwhile, the mobs heading for the rich district ran into the sheriff blockade, though these baton-wielding sheriffs were helpless.

The city defense forces were killed, leaving their weapons in the mob’s hands, which vented their rage and resentment on them.

”What are you doing!”

”Stop, do you know where you are?”

”Hurry and get out!”

The dogs once proud of guarding the gate for bureaucrats and wealthy, now facing an angry crowd, could only bark a few words, waving batons like bared teeth.

A spear thrust forward, directly piercing a sheriff’s chest. The noise paused, then the painful wails seemed to awaken the crowd.

”Take down those lackeys!”

The bloodthirsty populace pushed aside obstacles, sending weapons towards the sheriffs, instantly shredding the defense line.

Easy killing of sheriffs fueled their madness, making their intentions clear.

”Kill! Kill! Kill!”

”Rob! Rob! Rob!”

”Rape! Rape! Rape!”

Such commotion naturally alerted the wealthy’s guards; those raised for security were not only loyal but well-equipped, many having seen blood.

Once engaged, the brutal confrontation again proved Vick’s prudence in not leading the charge.

It was almost a one-sided massacre, but they underestimated the crowd’s craving, driving them to attack with insane vigor constantly.

Ultimately just stronger ordinary people, exhausted and overwhelmed, even piled corpses could kill them. After a few took down others and space got compressed, they died.

There might be archers and crossbowmen shooting, but with no effect on the battle, for they had no leader, driven solely by ambition and greed.

They broke through the first place, only to find it looking emptied upon entry.

”Damn! They ran, chase them!”

If the dead guards could see this, they’d likely be shocked.

This isn’t right, you should’ve said if you’re running...

Meanwhile, at Ovando City’s absolute center, the church, someone tossed a torch into a pile of Holy Canon texts, igniting flames that consumed the church, forming a bright blaze, as dawn slightly broke.

They returned to the Holy Flame, didn’t they?

Moments later, Lance emerged from Ovando’s church. His controlled areas didn’t allow any other forces to extend, whether church or mercenary guild, Lance dealt with them.

These people couldn’t be explained as missing; it was most reasonable to have them disappear amidst this uprising.

Lance’s stride hadn’t stopped; he discovered many special situations, like the Ascension Sect’s stronghold.

”Let’s burn Ovando to ashes...”
