Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1019: Chapter 569: Past Conspiracies

Ovando is a city that developed rapidly after the decline of Hamlet, and Lance had thoroughly understood the history of this city through intelligence.

Back then, the Hamlet region, including surrounding nobility, were invited by the ancestors to the courtyard and disappeared, so those here shouldn’t be called nobility; their real identity is more like rich merchants and bureaucrats.

Their role was to rely on the docks and land routes, responsible for extracting resources from the Hamlet region at low prices to supply the Empire.

This behavior was continuously draining Hamlet’s blood to nourish the Empire, causing the region to persistently decline.

It should be known that back then Hamlet was capable of supporting a complete industry for a million people, but now it has become a region that only outputs low-end agricultural by-products.

It can be said that Ovando’s development history is the decline history of Hamlet.

If Lance were not Hamlet’s Lord, naturally it wouldn’t concern him, but now he is the Lord and has the responsibility to bring about a revival in Hamlet.

The actions of these ”Hamtraitors” tread on his bottom line, as their wealth belongs to Hamlet.

My money! That is my money!

Lance wished to break them down completely, squeezing out everything to compensate for years of abuse of Hamlet.

The accounts must be settled with any enemy sucking the blood off Hamlet!

Unlike Totnes back then, Lance now doesn’t require Dismas’s assistance and seems to have rid himself of some trouble, fully exposing the most ferocious appearance to those enemies.

Without worry, as there will no longer be a second person to witness this scene.

As the night deepened, it seemed no one noticed that the lights in houses in the wealthy district were dimming one by one...

The night, silent.

In the mansion exuding a noble atmosphere, a middle-aged man was bent over a desk, working.

At this time, other bureaucrats were either at a banquet or in bed with prostitutes; one could say the Governor was among the more diligent bureaucrats.

Despite Ovando nearly paralyzed now, as Governor he still needed to handle many affairs.

After all, they just completed a round of harvest, and the wreckage needs tidying up.

It’s difficult solely relying on Gene and others; those genuinely pushing for this harvest of commoners are these bureaucrats.

Anyway, there are plenty of refugees, and wars are still ongoing outside; as long as the autumn grain is in place, everything will turn out alright.

Then they would become Ovando’s saviors again, and within two years no one would remember this happening.

Fatten pigs, and when the time’s right, slaughter them, only they feast on the meat and drink blood; who would care about a pork chop?

But today, the Governor’s study welcomed a special guest.

Lance directly pushed open the door, seemingly unconcerned by the other’s intentions, and sat down across from the Governor.

This scene immediately made the Governor uneasy, just stunned for a moment before the person was already seated opposite.

Ordinary people are reluctant to light a candle, but here on that one candlestick, four candles were lit, with a taper on each side of the room.

Under the bright light, both parties examined each other.

An unfamiliar young man, and at that moment he reacted, involuntarily looking outside.

”No need to look, they’re all asleep,” Lance’s calm voice came, even leaning back slightly in the chair for comfort, appearing leisurely as if he were truly visiting.

The silence outside the door, together with the lack of movement from guards patrolling outside the window, seemed to confirm his words.

The Governor was indeed the master of the city, facing the situation without losing control, simply collecting his emotions.

The Governor’s gaze fixed on Lance’s face, seemingly searching for familiar memories from it, but still unable to recognize the young man’s origins, nor his purpose.

He could only cautiously probe: ”I wonder if there’s anything I can assist with? As Ovando’s Governor, I can still make a statement here.”

This statement undoubtedly emphasized his identity, with a sort of threatening undertone, whilst also asserting his worth.

”Oh! I forgot to introduce myself, I’m the Lord of Hamlet, here to collect taxes.”

Lance spoke as if realizing it belatedly, and these words instantly changed the Governor’s expression, his rigid demeanor blocking more expressions from showing, but his irregular breathing betrayed his panic.

Lance precisely aimed to appreciate this reaction; why was there no reaction when harming Hamlet? Is he only afraid now?

”Tell me, what happened back then?”

”Are you truly the Lord of Hamlet?”

The Governor remembered the rumors he’d recently heard, that Hamlet’s name began appearing repeatedly, but he never thought such a day would truly come.

Just like a corpse long since decayed, could you imagine it suddenly standing up to slap you?

”Your son is at a banquet, isn’t he? It’s late and he’s still not back.”

Lance didn’t need to explain anything, uttering an unabashed threat.

”I’ll speak! Don’t touch him!” The sheriff suddenly reacted emotionally, his body moving.

”Don’t do anything foolish, you’re still useful to Ovando; I wouldn’t want to collect a corpse.”

Lance’s words, filled with a smile, made the Governor’s movements under the table pause, after a moment of silence the courage he mustered accompanied by his breath vanished, releasing the grip on the pistol, and he bowed his head dejectedly.
