Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Flagging something. Low priority currently but worth knowing. He sent a contact name and a company name and a building address on Mercer Street. Victor Crane. Private intelligence. Twenty-two years. Former government, eight years independent. High-end information work for clients with significant assets and specific problems. A pause. He was retained by Gordon Hale six weeks ago. The Hale engagement is closed but I’m picking up signals that Crane is continuing to look at something independently.

Sean looked at the message.

What signals, he said.

Database queries, said Max. The kind that come from someone building a profile. I track them because of what happened with Isabelle Crane and Ashford. I saw the same pattern starting three weeks ago from a different source. A pause. The queries are about you. Investment history, public records, campus enrollment, property connections.

How long has he been running them, said Sean.

Six weeks on the Hale account, said Max. The independent queries started eleven days ago.

Sean held his phone.

He thought about the Hale situation. The compliance filing. The Thursday lunch. The withdrawal.

He had closed the Hale thread.

He had not accounted for someone who had been building the picture on Hale’s behalf and who had found the three findings interesting enough to continue on their own account.

Victor Crane, he said. Full profile. Everything.

Already compiling, said Max. I’ll have it tonight.

Max, said Sean.

Yeah.

Jade Mercer, said Sean. Is she connected to Crane.

A pause from Max.

I’m checking. Then two minutes later: Not directly. But Crane has used independent contractors before for proximity work. Jade Mercer fits the profile of someone he would use. A pause. Sean, if Crane used Mercer and she withdrew and then she contacted you directly — he’ll have noticed the withdrawal. He’ll know something changed in the field.

Sean held his phone.

He thought about Jade sitting across a coffee table on a Saturday morning telling him she had withdrawn because of what she found and what she didn’t want Hale’s team to use.

She had withdrawn before telling him.

Clean.

But Victor Crane would have noticed the thinning reports and the withdrawal and would be reading both correctly.

Is there anything that connects Crane back to Makima or the building, said Sean.

No, said Max. His queries are about you directly. Investment history. Academic records. Public connections. He hasn’t found the building connection yet. A pause. But he’s systematic. He’ll get there.

Sean held his phone.

How long before he gets there, said Sean.

At his current rate, said Max. Two to three weeks.

Sean held his phone.

He looked at the wall.

He thought about the Hale situation being closed and this being a different thing.

Victor Crane was not Gordon Hale.

Hale had wanted leverage. He had responded to clarity about what the leverage would cost him.

Victor Crane had been in the information business for twenty-two years. He was not looking for leverage. He was looking for an explanation. For the thing that made the three findings make sense.

That was a different problem.

And finding the building would give him Makima.

Max, said Sean.

Yeah.

Monitor him, said Sean. Daily. I want to know everything he queries, everything he finds, and the moment his search pattern changes direction.

Already on it, said Max. Sean. How serious is this.

Sean held his phone.

He thought about what Victor Crane was.

He thought about twenty-two years of finding things that weren’t meant to be found.

He thought about the three findings having no conventional explanation.

He thought about what happened when someone with Crane’s specific capability kept looking at something that didn’t model correctly.

Serious enough to watch, said Sean. Not serious enough to move on yet.

When does it become serious enough to move on, said Max.

When he finds something that matters, said Sean. Until then we watch.

Watching, said Max.

Sean put his phone down.

He looked at the wall.

He thought about Jade Mercer sitting across a coffee table with dark eyes that read rooms the way his read rooms but through a different methodology.

He thought about what she had found and what she had left out and why.

He thought about whether Victor Crane had noticed more than the thinning reports.

He thought about a personal file on a desk on the fourteenth floor of a building on Mercer Street with no signage on the door.

He picked up his phone.

He texted Jade.

Do you know Victor Crane.

She replied in under two minutes.

I know of him. Why.

He was running the background work for Hale before you, said Sean. He noticed your withdrawal. He’s continuing independently.

A pause. Longer than her usual.

He’s thorough, she said. And patient. Another pause. That’s different from Hale.

Yes, said Sean.

What are you going to do, she said.

Watch, he said. For now.

For now, she said.

Yes, he said.

She held the line for a moment.

If you need to know something about how he works, she said. I’ve crossed paths with him twice. Not as a client. As parallel contractors on separate engagements.

What do you know about him, he said.

He doesn’t stop, she said. When he finds something that doesn’t have an explanation, he keeps looking until it does. He’s been doing this for twenty-two years and he’s never left a file open.

Sean held his phone.

Thank you, he said.

Yeah, she said. And then: Be careful.

He put his phone in his pocket.

He sat at his desk.

He thought about a file on a desk fourteen floors up and three miles east with his name on it.

He thought about two to three weeks before Crane found the building.

He thought about what he needed to understand before that happened.

He picked up the Kellerman framework and opened it.

He went back to work.

Some things needed watching before they needed moving on.

Two to three weeks was enough time.

He would use it correctly.
