Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”Always,” he said.

”About tonight,” she said.

”About you,” he said.

She looked at him.

The city light moved across her face through the window. The earrings. The bracelet. The specific quality of Makima when she was outside the building and in the world, the same person in a different context.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yeah.”

”When I said I hadn’t seen that film,” she said. ”Four months ago. You were barely listening. We were talking about something else.”

He held her gaze.

”I was listening,” he said.

She held the look.

”I know,” she said. ”That’s what I mean.”

The city continued outside the window.

James drove.

Makima turned back to look at the city and did not say anything else and did not need to.

===

They arrived at eight fifteen.

James pulled up outside the stadium entrance. The building was dark on the outside. The specific dark of a large structure that had been closed for the evening for a specific purpose.

Makima looked at it through the window.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”That’s a stadium,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She turned and looked at him fully.

”You rented a stadium,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at the building. Then at him. Then at the building again.

”For tonight,” she said.

”For tonight,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

He watched her face. The specific Makima process of receiving something larger than expected without performing the receiving. The stillness of it. The way she held things completely before she responded to them.

”The film,” she said quietly.

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at him.

Her eyes held something he had seen before but not often. The version of Makima that existed when something had arrived that she had not built a response for in advance because she had not known to build one.

”You remembered,” she said. ”One sentence. Four months ago.”

”I remember everything,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”That’s not what I mean.”

”I know what you mean,” he said.

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she looked at the stadium.

”Two people,” she said.

”Two people,” he said.

She was quiet.

Then: ”Okay,” she said. The Makima version of okay. The one that contained everything.

James opened the door.

They went in.

—-

The interior was arranged exactly as Sean had instructed.

The main lights down. The center section lit softly, two chairs placed with everything around them built for exactly two people. Blankets on the chairs. A small table between them with the specific food she liked, which Sean had noted across months of evenings without ever making the noting a thing. The screen at the far end of the field, large enough to be visible from the upper deck and therefore extraordinary from forty yards away.

Makima walked to the center of the section and stopped.

She stood in the middle of the empty stadium with the screen at one end and forty thousand vacant seats around her and the night sky visible through the open roof section above.

She stood there for a long moment.

Sean stood beside her.

He did not rush the moment. He never rushed moments. He let them be what they were.

”Nobody has ever done something like this for me,” she said. Not to him specifically. Just saying it into the space. ”Not because they couldn’t.” She paused. ”Because it didn’t occur to them.”

”It occurred to me,” he said.

She turned and looked at him.

Full version of her attention. The Makima who was warm and practical and said short accurate things and never over-explained. All of that present. And underneath it the specific quality of someone who had been receiving things from him for months and had never once asked for any of them and was standing in an empty stadium holding the weight of all of it.

”I know,” she said. ”That’s what I mean.”

He held her gaze.

She looked at the two chairs. At the small table. At the food he’d arranged.

”You know what I like,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”From watching,” she said.

”From paying attention,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Same thing,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”Same thing.”

She sat down in her chair.

She looked at the screen.

She looked at him beside her.

”Thank you,” she said. Simply. Not the social thank you. The one that meant it had landed exactly where it was aimed.

”Watch the film,” he said.

She almost smiled.

She looked at the screen.

The film started.

The sound of it filled the stadium the way sound filled a space built for forty thousand people when there were only two. Complete and surrounding and bigger than the two of them in a way that was not overwhelming but was exactly right.

Makima watched.

He watched.

Midway through she put her head on his shoulder.

Not announced. Not performed. Just placed there. The specific ease of someone doing the thing that felt correct without requiring permission for it.

He let the film be the film.

The stadium held them.

The night sky above the open section held its own stars.

Everything else was outside.

In here there was just the film and the two chairs and the woman who had been the first thing and who was still here and who had put her head on his shoulder because that was where it belonged.

He sat in it.

He let it be what it was.

The system ran its math.

Some evenings the math was not the point.

The film continued.

Makima’s head was on his shoulder.

The stadium was theirs.
