Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

The right way, she said.

I’ve watched you make it twice, he said.

She looked at the cup on the counter. She picked it up. She drank from it.

She was quiet for a moment.

You watched me make coffee, she said. And filed it.

Yes, he said.

She held the cup.

She looked at him across the small kitchen.

Of course you did, she said. This time she let of course stand. No correction. Just the flat acknowledgment of something that was simply what it was.

She sat across from him at the table.

They drank their coffee.

The Sunday morning held them. The kitchen quiet. The city outside doing its Sunday things without any particular reference to two people at a small table with two cups between them.

The rooftop, she said. After a while.

Yes, he said.

It was exactly right, she said. Not the social version. The flat true version.

Yes, he said.

You knew it would be, she said.

I hoped it would be, he said. There’s a difference.

She held her cup.

Is there, she said.

Knowing requires certainty, he said. I had a read. Reads aren’t certainties.

Your reads are usually correct, she said.

Usually, he said.

When are they wrong, she said.

He looked at his cup.

When I want something to be a certain way, he said. Wanting something changes the read.

She held that.

What did you want last night to be, she said.

He looked at her across the small table.

Exactly what it was, he said.

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she drank her coffee.

I have a policy brief due Tuesday, she said.

I know, he said.

I’m going to need Sunday to work on it, she said.

I know, he said.

Which means this is a coffee and then you go home, she said. Not coldly. The Amara version of practical, which contained warmth without performing it.

I know, he said.

You knew that before you made the coffee, she said.

Yes, he said.

She held her cup.

Okay, she said. The Amara okay. Filed correctly.

They drank their coffee.

After a while she said: The Wednesday call.

Yes, he said.

I’ve been thinking about how to structure the conversation, she said. Between Patricia Wren and Rachel Voss and me. Three people who have been approaching the same problem from different angles. The risk is that we spend the call establishing our individual positions rather than finding the shared architecture.

Open with the gap, he said. Not your positions. The gap itself. What it is and the fact that all three of you have been looking at it from different sides. That’s the starting point that makes the individual positions useful.

She held her coffee.

Open with the gap, she said.

Yes, he said. The gap is what you share. Everything else is how each of you has been mapping it.

She looked at him.

That’s the research framing, she said. The fellowship domain. You’re thinking about the Wednesday call and the fellowship at the same time.

They’re the same problem, he said. The call is a practical instance of the research question.

She held that.

You’re going to use what you learn from the call in the fellowship research, she said.

Yes, he said.

And the research will make the work that comes out of the call more credible, she said.

Yes, he said.

She looked at her coffee.

That’s a very clean architecture, she said.

Thank you, he said.

She looked at him.

I wasn’t complimenting you, she said. I was noting it.

I know, he said.

She almost smiled.

He almost smiled.

She drank the rest of her coffee.

He drank the rest of his.

He stood.

She walked him to the door.

At the door she looked at him with the full version of her attention. Not the professional Amara. Not the policy-adjacent register. The version that had been on the rooftop. The version that existed when nothing required anything of her except to be exactly who she was.

Sean, she said.

Yeah.

Thank you for the rooftop, she said. And the lamp. And the wine. And the chairs in the right position. And the correct coffee this morning.

Yes, he said.

And for finding Rachel Voss, she said. And Patricia Wren.

Yes, he said.

And for the eighth answer, she said.

Since the soup, he said.

She held his gaze.

Since the soup, she said.

He held her gaze.

Then she reached up and put her hand against his jaw briefly. The same way she had on the rooftop. Brief and deliberate. The specific completeness of Makima doing anything but different — Amara’s version, precise and direct and containing what it contained.

She put her hand down.

Go home, she said. I have a policy brief.

I know, he said.

He went.

He walked home.

The Sunday morning was the specific thing it was. Quiet and present and the city only beginning to move in the particular slow way it moved on Sundays.

He walked and let the morning be the morning.

His phone buzzed at eight thirty.

The system.

He looked at the notification.

SYSTEM NOTIFICATION

[Supreme Rebate System — Bond Event]

Amara Osei — Bond Evaluation Complete

Subject has been in sustained proximity with bond-holder across an extended period. Favorability threshold met.

Favorability: Maximum.

Fourth Slot — Allocation available.

This slot is allocated differently from Slots 1, 2, and 3.

Standard bond mechanics apply.

Additional notation: This bond originated from work. The subject’s work was the first thing the system registered as significant before the bond itself. This is filed accordingly.

The system notes: some bonds begin in what a person builds. This one did.

He read the notification twice.

Some bonds begin in what a person builds. This one did.

He held that.

He thought about forty-one slides and version history going back eight months. The four-page memo written in hospital. The soup she had made and corrected the same week. The eight questions she had abandoned because the questions had stopped being the point. The Wednesday call she had said yes to in four minutes because the gap was still there and someone should do something about it.

He thought about I think it means I’m exactly where I should be.

He closed the notification.

He looked at the Sunday morning around him.

The fourth slot filled.

Four bonds now. Four people running at maximum. The system running its quiet math on all of them simultaneously.

He thought about what that meant for the balance.

He thought about the passive resonance when all four were in proximity.

He thought about what came next.

He walked.

The city was waking up around him. The specific Sunday morning quality of it, unhurried and present, the week not yet started, everything still possible.

He got home.

He went upstairs.

He stood at his whiteboard.

He looked at what was written on it.

He picked up the marker.

He wrote one line.

Amara — fourth slot. Done.

He looked at it.

He put the marker down.

He picked up his phone.

He texted Max.

Wednesday call. Amara is opening with the gap. Make sure Wren and Voss have the framing before they arrive.

Max replied in two minutes.

Already drafted the pre-call brief. Sending to all three this afternoon.

Good, said Sean.

How was the rooftop, said Max.

Sean held his phone.

Good, he said.

I assumed, said Max. The property manager confirmed everything went correctly. I had them check this morning.

Of course you did, said Sean.

I’m thorough, said Max.

Yes, said Sean. You are.

He put his phone in his pocket.

He looked at the whiteboard.

The fourth slot filled.

Everything still in motion.

Everything still building toward what it was building toward.

======

The call was at two PM.

Max had sent the pre-call brief to all three of them Sunday afternoon. Three paragraphs. Clean and specific. The gap. What each person had been doing with it from their respective positions. The framing Amara was going to open with.

Sean was not on the call.

He was in his apartment with the Kellerman papers and his fellowship notes and a coffee that had gone slightly cold while he read. He had read all three of Kellerman’s papers across Sunday and Monday and had found the specific point where her academic framing and his research domain intersected and had written four pages of notes around that intersection.

At two fifteen his phone buzzed.

Not Amara. Max.

The call is running long. That’s a good sign.

Sean looked at that.

Yes, he texted back. Let it run.

He went back to the Kellerman papers.

At three forty-seven Amara texted.

Done.

Tell me, he said.

Patricia Wren has been tracking the gap for five years alone, she said. She has twenty quarterly reports. Nobody has read them. She has been publishing into a void because the gap is still there and she needed to keep documenting it. A pause. When Rachel Voss opened her copy of the monitoring reports on the call I watched Patricia Wren’s face change. Someone in the right position was reading them for the first time.
