Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”You’ve done orienteering before,” he said.

”Trail running,” she said. ”Six years. You learn to read terrain before you read a map.” She glanced at him. ”You didn’t look at the map once.”

”The map is less accurate than the terrain,” he said.

She looked at him with the same quality she’d had at the registration table. The filing look. Updating the picture.

”You read people the same way,” she said. Not a question.

”Yes,” he said.

”Most people don’t notice that’s what they’re doing,” she said. ”They think they’re just paying attention. But it’s specific. It’s a system.”

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at the trail ahead.

”Sports science,” she said. ”That’s my degree. People think it’s about physical performance. It’s actually about understanding systems. How the body works as a system. How teams work as systems.” She paused. ”The reading you’re doing is the same thing. System recognition.”

He looked at her.

She was looking at the trail. Her profile had the quality of someone who said accurate things without particular investment in how they landed.

”Northfield,” he said. ”Second year.”

”Yes,” she said.

”Why sports science,” he said.

”Because I wanted to understand why some people perform at their ceiling and some people perform below it,” she said. ”The difference is usually not physical. It’s usually something else.” She glanced at him. ”You perform at your ceiling.”

”How do you know,” he said.

”Because you’ve been reading this group since we left the starting point and you haven’t reacted to any of it,” she said. ”You’re not surprised by anything. That means you expected it. That means your model of what this exercise was going to be was accurate before it started.” She looked ahead again. ”That’s ceiling performance. When reality consistently matches your model.”

He held that.

She was right.

She was more precisely right than most people he’d spoken to in this timeline.

”Your model,” he said. ”Of what this exercise was going to be.”

”Eighty percent accurate,” she said immediately. ”I expected Tom to fall back. I didn’t expect Marcus to navigate with more confidence than accuracy. I thought he’d be more cautious.” She paused. ”I didn’t model you at all. I didn’t have enough data.”

”And now,” he said.

She looked at him.

The afternoon light was doing what afternoon light did in hill country, which was come through the cedar at an angle that made everything specific and particular.

”Now I have some data,” she said.

She looked back at the trail.

Marcus found the third marker ahead of them and announced it with the energy of someone for whom finding things was inherently satisfying.

They kept walking.

The hill country did what it did. Present and indifferent and exactly itself.

Sean thought about what Dani had said.

When reality consistently matches your model.

He thought about that as a definition of ceiling performance.

He thought about what it meant that she’d arrived at it in two hours.

He thought about three days.

He let the trail be the trail.

The evening meal was communal.

All twenty-four students at long tables in the main building. The food was simple and good in the way that food prepared for a group of people in a stone building in the hill country was good, which was honestly and without ambition.

Sean ate beside Marcus, who was debriefing the navigation exercise with the specific enthusiasm of someone who had enjoyed being wrong about the map and wanted to understand why.

Priya was at the next table. She was in conversation with a student from the fourth school, something that from its body language was either a debate or the preliminary stages of one. She was holding her own with the relaxed confidence of someone for whom debate was a natural operating mode.

At some point she looked across the tables and found Sean and held the look for one second.

He held it back.

She went back to her conversation.

Marcus noticed.

”Priya Thorne,” said Marcus, in a lower voice. ”Final year at Westmore. She’s cited in three papers I’ve read this year. Two of them in journals that don’t usually publish undergraduates.”

”I know,” said Sean.

”You know her,” said Marcus.

”We sat at the same briefing table,” said Sean.

”And,” said Marcus.

”And she reads briefing packets the same way I do,” said Sean.

Marcus looked at Priya. Then at Sean. Then at Priya again.

”Right,” said Marcus. ”I’m going to get more food.”

He went to get more food.

Sean looked at the table.

He thought about the alignment problem in scenario two.

He thought about Dani on the trail reading terrain before reading maps.

He thought about what Olivia had said.

Three days with twenty-three people who don’t know what you are might be good for you.

He thought about that.

He looked at the room.

The fire was lit in the main hearth at the far end. The faculty were at their own table doing what faculty did at these things, which was talk to each other about things unrelated to students while technically remaining available.

Marsh was not talking to the other faculty.

He was reading something.

He looked up at one point and found Sean across the room.

The look lasted two seconds.

Then Marsh went back to his reading.

Sean went back to his food.

The evening held what it held.

The hill country outside held everything else.

—--

The faculty retired at ten thirty.

Marsh was last. He paused at the door of the main hall, looked at the room for two seconds with the specific quality of someone who had done this enough times to know exactly what he was leaving behind, and then he left.

Sixteen students stayed.

The fire was the reason. Not consciously. Just the specific gravity of a fire in a stone building in the hill country at ten thirty at night when there was nowhere else to be and nothing that required being anywhere else.
