Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

The restaurant was on the corner of Aldine and Fifth in a building that had been a print shop for forty years and still had the original wooden floor.

They walked in at seven twenty-eight.

The host looked at them and looked at the reservation and led them to a table near the window on the left side of the room. Not the center. Not the back. The left side, which had the view of the corner outside and the specific quality of being in the room without being the room’s focal point.

Sean had not specified the table location.

Max had.

Makima sat down and looked around the room.

”New,” she said.

”Three months,” he said.

”It doesn’t feel three months,” she said. ”It feels like it’s been here longer.”

”The floor,” he said. ”It was a print shop before.”

She looked at the floor. The specific worn quality of old wood that had absorbed forty years of foot traffic.

”Good bones,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She picked up the menu and read it the way she read things, completely and without skipping.

He read his.

The server came. They ordered. She chose without deliberating, the specific ease of someone who had made a decision and was not second-guessing it. He ordered the same way.

The server left.

Makima looked at the corner outside the window. The Thursday evening doing what Thursday evenings did.

”Patricia Wren,” she said.

He looked at her.

”You mentioned her,” she said. ”When you were explaining the compliance filing. Indirectly. The person whose work had been in the wrong architecture for five years.”

”Yes,” he said.

”Something resolved for her today,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The right room,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held her water glass.

”I’ve been thinking about that,” she said. ”Since you said it about the building. The right architecture around the right work.” She held the glass. ”You talk about it like it’s a technical thing. The architecture. The room. The structure.”

”It is a technical thing,” he said.

”It’s also not,” she said. She set the water glass down. ”Patricia Wren carrying a binder to meetings for five years because the gap was still there. That’s not technical. That’s someone who refused to let correct work disappear because the room was wrong.”

”Yes,” he said.

”You found her the right room,” she said.

”Amara found her the right room,” he said. ”I found Amara the right introduction.”

She held his gaze.

”That’s the third time you’ve distributed credit for something you built,” she said.

”I didn’t build it,” he said. ”The work was already there. The people were already there. I found where they needed to be in relation to each other.”

”That’s the building,” she said.

He looked at her.

”What,” he said.

”That’s what I do with the building,” she said. ”Not the plumbing. Not the leases. The people.” She held his gaze. ”Mrs. Ellison and the couple in unit three who have the noise dispute that isn’t actually about noise. Danny and the woman on the second floor who have been leaving packages outside each other’s doors for six months without saying why. The building is full of people who need to be in the right relation to each other.” She paused. ”I’ve been doing that for six years without a word for it.”

He held her gaze.

”Architecture,” he said.

”Architecture,” she said.

The food arrived. The server set it down cleanly and left.

They ate.

It was very good. The specific quality of food made by someone who had learned in a kitchen that took the work seriously and had brought that seriousness here.

”Good,” said Makima.

”Very good,” he said.

”Max found this,” she said.

”In four minutes,” he said.

”Max is useful,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”You built that too,” she said. ”Max.”

He held his fork.

”Max built Max,” he said.

”You gave him the right room,” she said.

He held her gaze for a moment.

She held it back.

Then she went back to her food.

He went back to his.

The restaurant moved around them. The specific ambient quality of a room that had been open three months and had already found its rhythm. Tables at the right distance from each other. The kitchen sound at the right level. The floor absorbing the noise the way old wood did.

After a while Makima said: ”The thing about the building.”

”Tell me,” he said.

”When I moved in six years ago I was managing something that was already broken in three places,” she said. ”The previous manager had let things go because he didn’t care enough to fix them or because fixing them cost something he didn’t want to spend.” She held her water glass. ”I fixed the three things and then the building started working. Not because I did anything extraordinary. Because the building wanted to work. It just needed the right person to see where it was broken and fix those specific things.”

”You gave it what it needed,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”That’s it exactly.” She held his gaze. ”And then you moved in and the building became something it hadn’t been before. Not because of the money or the repairs or any of the visible things.” She paused. ”Because you paid attention to it. You paid attention to the people in it the same way I did but from a different angle.”

”You pay attention from the inside,” he said. ”I pay attention from the outside.”

”Yes,” she said. ”Both are necessary.”

He held that.

She looked at her plate.

”I’ve been thinking about what you are,” she said. ”Not in the building. In general.”

”And,” he said.

”I don’t have a complete answer,” she said. ”I’ve been watching you for eight months and I still don’t have a complete answer.” She held his gaze. ”But I have a partial one.”

”Tell me,” he said.

”You’re someone who sees what things need in order to work,” she said. ”Not what they are. What they need. And then you give them that.” She paused. ”Most people see what things are. Some people see what things could be. You see what they need.”
