Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”I know the one,” he said.

”It runs past the east cabins,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”My cabin is the third one,” she said. ”On the east side.”

He looked at her

She looked back.

Not the hint of it. Not the suggestion of it. The full version. The woman who had read terrain before maps for six years and who had decided that this terrain was readable and had read it and was now saying what she’d read directly, without performance, in the specific way she did everything.

”I don’t sleep well in new places,” she said. ”First night especially. Usually takes me a few hours to settle.”

”Yes,” he said.

”So I’ll be awake,” she said.

She stood.

She looked at him from standing height. The same look she’d given him on the trail when she’d said *you already knew it was left.*

She walked out.

The door opened and let in a breath of hill country night and then closed.

Sean sat with the coals for a moment.

He thought about terrain.

He thought about the only way to understand some of it.

He stood.

He walked out into the hill country night.

The creek was audible immediately. The air was cooler than the main hall and smelled of cedar and the specific clean quality of a place that had not been modified for human comfort.

He stood on the path.

He looked at the east cabins through the trees.

The third one had its light on.

He walked toward it.

—--

He walked to the third cabin on the east side.

The light was on inside. Visible through the gap at the bottom of the door and the thin line at the edge of the curtain. Not the bright light of someone who hadn’t thought about sleeping. The specific low light of someone who had.

He knocked once.

Not loudly. The knock of someone who understood that the door was the last decision point and was giving it the appropriate weight.

A pause.

Then the sound of movement inside. Not hurried. Deliberate.

The door opened.

Dani was standing in the doorway.

She had changed again since the fire. Loose shorts. A faded university t-shirt that had been washed enough times to stop having any ambition about itself. Her hair was out of its daytime arrangement, the natural shape of it without the sides compressed under anything.

She looked at him.

No surprise. She had told him the cabin was the third one on the east side with the specific calm of someone who knew whether the door was going to open.

She stepped back.

He came in.

---

The cabin was small.

One room. A bed against the far wall. A single wooden chair. A narrow window with the curtain drawn that had a finger-width gap letting in the creek sound from outside. A reading lamp on the floor beside the bed because there was no bedside table, which Dani had clearly addressed by putting the lamp on the floor rather than reading in the dark, because that was how she addressed things.

She had been reading.

The book was face-down on the bed. A habit Sean recognized as someone who didn’t want to lose their place but didn’t want to fold the page either.

He looked at the room.

”Small,” he said.

”Everything you need,” she said. ”Nothing you don’t.” She stood a few feet from him. The cabin was small enough that a few feet was most of the available space. ”Sit down. There’s only the chair or the bed.”

He sat on the edge of the bed.

She stayed standing.

She was looking at him with the version of her attention that she’d had on the trail and at the fire and that had been building across the full day, the one that was taking everything in without reacting to it.

”You came,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”I wasn’t certain you would,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”Most people I say something like that to need more than I said,” she said. ”More obvious. More direct.” She tilted her head slightly. ”You understood it.”

”The terrain was clear,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”When I was sprinting,” she said. ”At sixteen. Before I quit.” She sat down on the chair across from him, leaning forward with her elbows on her knees. Not putting distance between them. The cabin was too small for distance to mean anything. Just the specific posture of someone who talked with her whole body when she was being honest. ”I had a race where I was fastest out of the blocks. Best start I’d ever had. I could feel it immediately, that specific clarity when everything fires at once.” She paused. ”And then fifty meters in I started thinking about the race. Not running it. Thinking about it. Analyzing it while it was happening.” Her eyes stayed on his. ”I came second.”

”The analysis replaced the running,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”After that I started studying why. What was different in the races where I just ran versus the ones where I started thinking.” She paused. ”The answer was always the moment. Whether I was in it or watching it.”

”Which do you prefer,” he said.

”Being in it,” she said. Without hesitation.

He held her gaze.

The creek outside was a continuous sound through the curtain gap. The lamp on the floor cast the room in the specific warm low light of something that was designed for reading and was doing a different job now.

”Today was a long day,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Navigation exercise in the afternoon,” he said. ”Full briefing in the morning. Dinner. Two hours at the fire.”

”Yes,” she said. She didn’t move. Her eyes were completely steady.

”And you’re not tired,” he said.

”I told you,” she said. ”I don’t sleep well the first night in a new place.”

”You said it takes a few hours to settle,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”What helps,” he said.

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she stood up from the chair.

She was five foot eight and she was standing and he was sitting on the edge of the bed and the distance between them was what it was, which was not much.

”Something that requires me to be in the moment,” she said. ”Not thinking about it.” She looked at him with the full version of her attention. The one from the trail when she’d said the data holds together but I can’t see the whole shape yet. ”Being in the moment completely. That’s what settles me.”

”I know,” he said.

”I know you know,” she said.

She was looking at him the way she’d looked at the fork in the trail. The read that had already happened, the decision that had already been made, everything after it just the terrain being what it was.

He stood.

The distance between them became less.

She didn’t move back.

She looked up at him with the dark steady eyes that had been reading terrain all day and had been reading this specific terrain since the fire and had arrived at where they’d both known the terrain was pointing.

”First night in a new place,” she said quietly.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you’re here,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Her hand came up and found the front of his shirt. Not grabbing. Just finding it. The specific deliberateness of someone who did everything deliberately.

”Be in the moment,” she said. ”Not thinking about it.”

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at him for one more second.

Then she reached past him and turned off the lamp.
