Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

He held her gaze.

He did not say anything.

She held it for a moment.

”That’s the partial answer,” she said.

”It’s accurate,” he said.

”I know it’s accurate,” she said. ”That’s why it’s the partial answer. Accurate things are usually partial.”

He almost smiled.

She went back to her food.

He went back to his.

The corner outside the window held its Thursday evening. A couple walking. A delivery cyclist. The ordinary movement of a city at eight PM.

”Danny,” said Sean. After a while.

She looked at him.

”Your brother,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”How is he,” he said.

”Good,” she said. The warm specific version. ”He started a course in March. Electrical installation. He’s good at it.” She held her water glass. ”He called me last Sunday. He’s never called on a Sunday before. He always texts.”

”What did he say,” said Sean.

”He said he wanted to say thank you,” she said. ”For the last year. He didn’t specify what he was thanking me for. I think he meant everything.”

”He should thank you,” said Sean.

”I told him it wasn’t me,” she said.

”Makima,” he said.

”It wasn’t only me,” she said. ”Which is what I actually told him. I told him that things working correctly is usually not one person.”

He held her gaze.

”What did he say,” he said.

”He said he knew,” she said. ”And then he said he’d call again next Sunday.” A pause. ”He’s never called two Sundays in a row before.”

Sean held his water glass.

He thought about Danny before the debt was cleared. The weight of it on Makima in the way she carried things she handled quietly without letting them show. The specific relief of that weight lifting, not dramatically, just one fewer thing in the wrong architecture.

”Good,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”Very good.”

They finished eating.

The server cleared the plates. Sean ordered dessert because Makima had looked at the menu item for a half-second longer than the others, which was Makima’s version of wanting something without saying so.

She looked at him when the dessert arrived.

”I didn’t ask for this,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”You paid attention,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She ate the dessert.

It was good.

She said nothing about it being good because the eating was sufficient.

He paid.

James was outside.

They got in.

The drive back was the specific quality of a return journey after an evening that had been what it needed to be. Unhurried. Present. The city moving past the window.

At some point Makima said: ”Aldine and Fifth.”

”Yes,” he said.

”We should go back,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Not for a while,” she said. ”Let it be the first time for a while.”

He looked at her.

”Yes,” he said. ”That’s right.”

She looked at the window.

James pulled up at the building.

They went in.

Up the stairs.

Her floor.

Her door.

She turned and looked at him.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yeah.”

”The partial answer,” she said. ”About what you are.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I’m going to keep working on the rest of it,” she said.

”Take your time,” he said.

”I will,” she said. She held his gaze. ”You see what things need. I’ve been thinking about what that means for the things that are already working correctly.”

”What does it mean,” he said.

She looked at him.

”That you see what they need to keep working,” she said. ”Not just what they need to start.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

She held it for one more moment.

Then she went in.

The door closed.

He stood in the hallway for a moment.

Then he went upstairs.

He sat at his desk.

He did not open the Kellerman framework. He just sat.

He thought about Patricia Wren putting a binder in her bag.

He thought about Makima saying you see what things need to keep working.

He thought about what that meant applied to everything that was currently working.

He thought about what was still coming.

After a while he picked up his phone.

One text from Amara.

Dinner was good. Patricia Wren is staying an extra day. She wants to see the city. A pause. I’m showing her around tomorrow. She’s never been.

Good, he said.

She asked about you again at dinner, she said. I told her what I always tell her. Someone who finds the architecture.

She asked what that meant again, he said.

No, said Amara. This time she said: I know what that means now. I’ve seen what it produces. A pause. And then she ordered dessert.

He looked at that.

Good, he said.

Goodnight Sean, she said.

Goodnight, he said.

He put his phone down.

Victor Crane kept an office on the fourteenth floor of a building on Mercer Street that had no signage on the door and a company name in the building directory that said nothing about what the company did.

This was deliberate.

He had been in the information business for twenty-two years. Fourteen with a government agency that no longer existed under that name. Eight independent. In those eight years he had built a specific reputation among a specific kind of client — the kind who needed to understand something precisely and quietly and who had the resources to pay for precision and quiet.

He was forty-seven. Medium height, lean, the build of someone who had stayed in the habit of taking care of himself not for appearance but because the work occasionally required it. Gray at the temples. Eyes that did what eyes did when they had been trained to read situations for two decades, which was process everything simultaneously and react to almost nothing visibly.

He sat at his desk on a Tuesday morning in the third week of the month and read the file his associate had assembled on Gordon Hale’s situation.
