Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

The city below them. The neighborhood she had wanted to see laid out to the north, visible and specific and exactly right.

The lamp on the table between them. A bottle of wine he had arranged, opened and breathing. Two glasses.

She looked at the wine.

You thought of everything, she said.

Most things, he said.

What did you miss, she said.

I don’t know yet, he said. Something always comes up.

She held the look for a moment.

Then she picked up the wine and poured two glasses and handed him one.

She held hers and looked at the city.

He held his and looked at the city.

The evening was mild. The lamp was warm. The neighborhood below was exactly itself, the streets and rooftops and lights doing what they did without any awareness of two people looking at them from above.

It’s better from up here, she said.

Yes, he said.

I always thought it would be, she said. I just kept not going.

What stopped you, he said.

She held the wine.

Nothing important, she said. Just the usual accumulation of things that needed doing that were more immediate than things that could wait. She paused. The wanting-to-see-it-from-above thing felt like something I’d get to eventually.

Eventually arrived, he said.

Yes, she said. It did. She looked at him. Because you made it arrive.

You would have gotten here, he said.

Maybe, she said. But it wouldn’t have been tonight. It wouldn’t have been with the lamp and the wine and the two chairs in exactly the right position. She held his gaze. It wouldn’t have been this.

He held her gaze.

No, he said. It wouldn’t have been this.

She looked at the city.

He looked at the city.

The evening settled around them.

After a while she said: Can I ask you something.

Yes, he said.

The things you do, she said. The rooftop. The wine. The chairs in exactly the right position. Rachel Voss. Patricia Wren. The fellowship domain. She held the wine. You do all of it and you don’t need anything back from any of it. You don’t need the recognition or the gratitude or any of the things that people usually need when they do something for someone.

No, he said.

Why, she said.

He held his wine.

He thought about the answer honestly.

Because the doing is the point, he said. The thing landing correctly. That’s what matters. Not what comes back from it.

She held that.

That’s very rare, she said.

I know, he said.

Most people do things for other people and they need something back, she said. Even good people. Even people who aren’t doing it cynically. They need to know it landed. They need the acknowledgment.

Yes, he said.

You don’t, she said.

I prefer it when things land correctly, he said. That’s not the same as not needing anything.

She looked at him.

What do you prefer, she said.

He held the wine.

This, he said. Someone seeing the neighborhood from above. Not the looking-at-me-for-having-arranged-it. The actual looking at the thing.

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she turned and looked at the city.

She looked at the neighborhood to the north. The streets she had wanted to see from above. The specific arrangement of it from this height, the way the pattern of it was only visible when you were far enough away.

She looked at it for a while.

He let her look.

It’s exactly what I thought, she said finally.

Good, he said.

Better, actually, she said. I thought it would be good. It’s better than I thought.

Yes, he said. It usually is.

She turned and looked at him.

The lamp between them. The wine. The evening.

Sean, she said.

Yeah.

She held his gaze with the full version of her attention. The Amara who calibrated rather than softened. The Amara who said true things flatly and directly and had been building toward this specific version of an evening for longer than either of them had formally acknowledged.

She set her glass down on the table.

She stood.

She looked at him from standing height.

Come here, she said.

Quietly. The specific quiet of something that had been true for a long time being said out loud for the first time because the rooftop was theirs and the evening was theirs and there was no reason not to.

He stood.

She looked at him.

The city below them. The neighborhood she had wanted to see. The lamp warm between the two chairs. The wine on the table.

She reached up and put her hand against his jaw.

Not the professional Amara. Not the policy-adjacent register. Not the notebook or the organized questions or the careful calibration of everything she said.

Just her. Exactly as she was. On a rooftop on a Saturday evening with the city spread out below them and her hand against his jaw and nothing requiring anything of either of them except to be present in the same space.

She looked at him.

I’ve been building toward this for a while, she said. Quietly.

I know, he said.

I know you know, she said.

She held his gaze for one more moment.

Then she pulled him toward her.

—

Her hand closed around the front of his shirt, and she pulled.

He came. No resistance. No performance of being pulled. Just the short step that closed the space between them, unhurried, exactly the distance required.

Her other hand found his shoulder. Then his jaw again, both hands now, framing his face, and she looked at him from close range. The lamp lit one side of her, the city lit the other. Her thumbs moved once against his cheekbones.

He didn’t rush it.

He stood and let her look at him, and after a moment he lifted one hand and set it at her waist, flat, unhurried, the exact pressure of someone who had decided where his hand belonged and stored the decision. She felt the warmth of his palm through the green fabric of her dress.

She kissed him.

Not carefully. Not slowly at first—she had been building toward this, and the building had a floor that gave way the moment her mouth met his. She pulled him by the jaw and kissed him like she was crossing into a room she’d been standing outside for months.

He kissed her back with the same economy he did everything. Precise. Attentive. His mouth moved against hers in no particular hurry, which was somehow the thing that undid her—that he would not be hurried, that he had settled in, that the rooftop and the wine and the lamp and the corrected soup and the neighborhood she’d wanted to see from above had all been steps in an unhurried sequence that arrived here and had nowhere it needed to be.

Her hands went to his buttons.

He let her.

She worked the first one, second, third—his shirt opened dark in the low light, and she pressed her palms flat against his chest, felt the warmth of skin, the unhurried rise of his breath. His hand at her waist stayed where it was. He did not grab. He did not pull her closer than she had decided to be. He waited, and she understood that his waiting was a form of attention, that he was reading her the way he read everything, seeing more than he was reacting to.

She took his shirt off his shoulders. He helped—one movement, minimal—and the dark fabric fell to the chair behind him.

She reached for the zipper at her side.

He stopped her. One hand over hers. Quiet.

Let me, he said.

She let him.

He found the zipper and drew it down. Slow. The dress loosened around her, and he eased the strap off one shoulder, then the other, and the fabric slid, and she stepped out of it—careful, because there was a chair and a table and wine and she did not want any of it to matter more than this.

She stood in front of him in the warm lamp light with the city spread out below them and the neighborhood she had wanted to see visible to the north over his shoulder.

He looked at her. The full version of his attention. Not cataloging. Just seeing.

You’re beautiful, he said. Flat. A fact.

I know, she said.

He almost smiled. Almost.

She reached for his belt.

He let her undo it. Let her draw the zip. Let his trousers fall and step out of them, and then they were both standing there in the mild night air, skin in the warm low light, and she felt the specific clean warmth of his presence in a small space, which was the thing she had noticed about him from the beginning and had never learned to stop noticing.

She put her hand flat on his chest again and pushed, gently, toward the chairs.

He went.
