Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

She looked at the fire.

She looked at Dani.

She looked at Sean.

The look she gave Sean was not the registration look or the trail look. It was the observer’s look. The one that had already been watching before she arrived.

She came and sat beside Dani.

”I tried sleeping,” she said.

”And,” said Dani.

”It turns out I didn’t actually want to sleep,” said Jess. ”I wanted to decide whether to come back. I decided yes.” She accepted a biscuit from the sleeve Marcus had left on the bench without asking permission and looked at Sean. ”Jess Calloway. Westmore. International relations.”

”Sean Miller,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”Priya mentioned you at dinner.”

”What did she say,” he said.

”That you read scenario two the same way she did,” said Jess. ”Which is apparently not something that happens.” She ate the biscuit. ”She said it the way she says things that are interesting to her.”

”How does she say things that are interesting to her,” he said.

”Once,” said Jess. ”She says them exactly once. If it’s not interesting it doesn’t get said at all. If it’s very interesting it gets said once and then filed.” She held his gaze. ”You got said once.”

He held that.

Jess looked at Dani.

Something passed between them in the specific language of two people who knew each other well. Not words. Just a look that had a full sentence inside it.

Dani looked at the fire.

Jess almost smiled and looked at her phone.

---

The room thinned.

By eleven thirty it was ten people. By eleven forty-five it was eight.

Marcus surfaced from his conversation at some point, looked at the fire and at the remaining people and at Sean specifically with the expression of someone who was understanding something but deciding not to comment on it, and said he was going to bed.

”Good night,” said Sean.

”Good night,” said Marcus. He picked up his biscuit sleeve. He left.

Eight people became six.

The fire was lower now. Still going but lower, the specific stage of a fire’s life where it was still warm without the earlier brightness.

Jess had put her phone away at some point. She was looking at the fire with the specific quality of someone who was in the room and also slightly outside it, the observer maintaining both positions simultaneously.

Dani hadn’t moved from across the fire.

She had been sitting in the same position for an hour. Not restless. Not performing stillness. Just actually there, the way she was on the trail, fully present in the terrain.

She looked at him.

”You know what I find difficult,” she said.

”Tell me,” he said.

”People who pace to the group average,” she said. ”Not because it’s wrong. Because once you’ve learned to pace to the terrain you can see everyone else pacing to each other and it makes the average very visible. And the average is usually slower than what the moment requires.”

”Yes,” he said.

”You see it too,” she said.

”Always,” he said.

”Does it bother you,” she said.

He thought about this honestly.

”Only when the terrain requires something specific and the group misses it,” he said. ”Otherwise no.”

”The fork today,” she said. ”The group would have gone right.”

”Yes,” he said.

”But you and I both saw left,” she said. ”Before I said it.” She held his gaze. ”When was the last time that happened. Someone else seeing what you see before you say it.”

He looked at her.

He thought about the answer.

”Not often,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”I don’t imagine it happens often.”

The fire shifted again. Lower still.

One of the remaining six students stood and said goodnight and left. Then another.

Four people.

Sean. Dani. Jess. One Crestfield student who had fallen asleep on the far bench with his jacket over his shoulders.

Jess stood.

She looked at Dani.

”I’m actually sleeping this time,” she said.

Dani said nothing.

Jess looked at Sean.

”It was good to meet you Sean Miller,” she said. Simply. The specific simplicity of someone who meant exactly what they said.

”You too,” he said.

She looked at both of them one more time with the observer’s full attention.

Then she went to bed.

---

The fire was coals now.

Orange and low and warm in the specific way of something past its height but not finished.

The Crestfield student was fully asleep.

Sean and Dani were the only two people still present to the room.

She had not moved.

He had not moved.

The space between them was the fire and the bench width and an hour of conversation that had built something without naming what it was building.

She looked at him.

Not the registration look. Not the trail look. Not the water bottle handoff look.

The one underneath all of those.

”The thing about terrain,” she said. Her voice was lower now. The specific register of someone speaking in a quiet room at the end of an evening. ”You can read it all you want from a distance. Maps, sight lines, elevation data.” She paused. ”But some terrain you only understand by being in it.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

”I’ve been watching you read this room all evening,” she said. ”The way you read the trail today. Taking everything in without reacting to it.” She tilted her head slightly. ”What does it read as.”

”Specific,” he said.

”Specific how,” she said.

”Like there’s one thing the terrain is pointing toward,” he said. ”And everything else is just the terrain around it.”

She held his gaze for a long moment.

The coals were orange and still.

The hill country outside was doing what it did at midnight. The creek sound through the stone walls. The cedar that had no relationship to what was happening inside.

”I run trails at six in the morning when I can,” she said. ”Before the day needs anything from me.” She paused. ”There’s a trail from the south side of the property that runs along the creek. I looked at it this afternoon on the map.”
