Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

She looked at the stack. ”The bottom one,” she said. ”Infrastructure policy in post-industrial economies. It’s dry and completely necessary and I’ve been trying to finish it for three weeks.”

”You brought a dry necessary book to a three day outdoor program,” he said.

”I bring it everywhere,” she said. ”It doesn’t mean I read it everywhere.” She held his gaze. ”Tonight I’m not reading it.”

He held the look.

The lamp between them cast the room in the specific warm quality of something designed for reading being used for something else.

”Priya,” he said.

”Yeah.”

”The line,” he said. ”From here to April to London.”

”Yes,” she said.

”You said this falls outside it,” he said.

”It does,” she said.

”And you’re doing it anyway,” he said.

She looked at him directly. Not defensive. Not performing the decision. Just standing in it the way she stood in everything, with the full weight of herself behind it.

”I’ve been building toward April for two years,” she said. ”Every decision calibrated toward that line. I know exactly what the research position requires. I know exactly what London is going to be.” She paused. ”I’ve been very good at staying on the line.”

”And now,” he said.

”And now I’m in the hill country for three days,” she said. ”Away from the line. In a room I’ve never been in before.” She tilted her head slightly. ”With someone I couldn’t categorize.”

”You categorized me,” he said.

”Partially,” she said. ”I have the professional read. The briefing table read. The lake path this morning.” She held his gaze. ”I don’t have the rest of it.”

”What rest,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

”Who you are when you’re not reading the room,” she said. ”When you stop operating and just exist somewhere.” She paused. ”I don’t know if that version happens. I don’t know if you let it.”

He held her gaze.

”It happens,” he said.

”Rarely,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”Rarely.”

She looked at him.

”Does it happen now,” she said. Not as a challenge. As a real question, the specific quality of Priya asking things she actually wanted to know the answer to.

He looked at her.

At the dark eyes and the loose hair and the white shirt in the lamp’s warmth and the expression of someone who had decided to be in this room fully rather than partially.

”Yes,” he said.

She absorbed this.

The lamp held its warmth between them.

Outside the hill country was doing its night things. The creek somewhere to the east. The cedar smell through the gap at the window’s edge. The specific quality of a place that had no interest in what was happening inside the cabin beside it.

”Sit down,” she said. ”There’s only the bed or the chair.”

He looked at the chair with the open bag on it.

”The chair has your bag,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”It does.”

He sat on the edge of the bed.

She stayed standing.

Not putting distance between them. The cabin was too small for distance. Just the specific posture of someone who was in the room and present in it but had not yet decided what came next.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

”At the briefing table,” she said. ”When I sat down. You were on page fourteen.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I sat across from you and you didn’t look up from the packet for six seconds,” she said. ”Most people look up immediately when someone sits across from them.”

”I knew you were there,” he said.

”I know you knew,” she said. ”That’s the thing. You knew and you finished the paragraph before you looked up.” She tilted her head. ”You were deciding something.”

”Yes,” he said.

”What,” she said.

”Whether you’d read the packet or were holding it,” he said. ”Whether you were at page twelve because you’d been reading since you sat down or because you’d picked it up when I looked up.”

”Page twelve,” she said. ”I’d been reading since I sat down.”

”I know,” he said. ”That’s what I decided.”

She was quiet.

”Six seconds,” she said. ”To decide that.”

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at him with the full version of the dark eyes, the look that had been building since the briefing table and the morning session and the lake at seven this morning and the dinner beside the water.

”What are you deciding now,” she said.

He looked at her.

At the loose hair and the white shirt and the lamp’s warmth and the open briefing packet on the bed beside him with its dense margin notes and the pen that had moved quickly when things were resolving.

”Nothing,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Nothing,” she repeated.

”Everything’s already clear,” he said.

She held the look for one more moment.

Then she reached over and moved the briefing packet from the bed to the desk, setting it on top of the closed laptop. She did it without breaking his gaze. The specific economy of someone who was removing the thing that was in the way.

She sat beside him on the edge of the bed.

Not across from him. Beside him. Close enough that the warmth of her was present.

She looked at her own hands for a moment.

Then she looked at him.

”I don’t do this,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”I need you to understand that,” she said. ”Not as a warning. Just as information. This is not a category of thing I do.”

”I understand,” he said.

”And I’m doing it anyway,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Because I’m in the hill country for three days,” she said quietly. ”And you’re the person I couldn’t categorize. And April is April and London is London and tonight is not either of those things.”

He held her gaze.

”Tonight is this,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”Tonight is this.”

She turned toward him fully.

Her hand came up and found his jaw. Not grabbing. Just finding it. The specific deliberateness of someone who did everything with intention and was doing this with all of it.

She held his face for a moment.

Looking at him the way she’d looked at the sequencing structure when it resolved. When the thing she couldn’t categorize became something she could hold.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yeah,” he said.

”Be here,” she said. ”Not reading the room. Just here.”

”I’m here,” he said.

She looked at him for one more second.

Then she leaned in.
