Chapter 146: Chapter 146: Standing at the Heights

”Zhou An, one can’t be too humble, especially in a world like this, or else you’ll die without a trace.”

Ma Xuekai squatted by the window, looking at the horde of zombies below, a cigarette between his fingers, exhaling a cloud of smoke as he spoke.

Zhou An stood beside Ma Xuekai, and said, ”Are you really okay? You were unconscious all night yesterday, I thought you weren’t going to make it.”

Ma Xuekai’s eyes were rimmed with white, his pupils darkened, and he said faintly, ”Almost died, but now I’m fine... I feel great now.”

When he woke up, he discovered that his body had undergone a tremendous change and he had gained special abilities.

Zhou An looked at his phone and continued, ”I just got in touch with Huang Biao, he’s willing to take us in, and they’re not too far from our location.”

Ma Xuekai closed his eyes to feel the cool morning breeze, smelling the scent of blood and decay in it, and said, ”Sorry, I might not go with you.”

Zhou An showed a look of confusion, feeling that Ma Xuekai had changed significantly all of a sudden, but he couldn’t pinpoint what exactly had changed. He said,

”Why? Joining them is our best option right now, and Brother Su is also at that base, we shouldn’t be treated differently.”

Ma Xuekai stood up from the ground, with a slightly weathered face showing a gentle smile, and said,

”I’m sorry, it’s not that we’re not going, it’s just me. Going there is indeed a good choice, but you should take the others and go... I have other plans now.”

Zhou An’s expression changed slightly, with bloodstains still on his face, and he asked puzzledly, ”Why? It’s hard to survive alone, together we can look out for each other.”

He and Ma Xuekai were quite familiar with each other, supporting each other since the second day of the apocalypse and surviving until now.

He still remembered that it was this man, indifferent to life and death, who gave him the courage to fight zombies.

Ma Xuekai threw his unfinished cigarette on the ground and stomped it out, saying calmly, ”No reason, I’ve figured some things out and want to live differently... this time I want to stand at the top, admired by everyone.”

Zhou An didn’t persuade him further, and led the others to pack up and prepare to leave.

Downstairs, Ma Xuekai only took a Hunter’s longsword, and shouted, ”I’m leaving, Zhou An, live well.”

They parted ways with an indifferent farewell, without any big waves, Zhou An only noticed that the back of Ma Xuekai’s jacket was a bit dirty, as the place he lay last night was not clean.

...

Su Changxing returned to the base at a steady pace, after walking for half an hour, he saw a group of people from afar, and upon closer inspection, it turned out to be Zhou An and the others.

Zhou An was very happy when he saw Su Changxing and said, ”Brother Su, I didn’t expect us to meet here, we were just about to head to the base.”

Su Changxing glanced around and noticed one person was missing, so he asked, ”Where’s Ma Xuekai? Is he dead?”

He had a deep impression of that unlucky man, feeling he was different from ordinary people.

Zhou An hesitated for a moment and said, ”He, uh, left... he ate that crystal yesterday, the one extracted from those Hunters.”

Ate an Extraordinary Crystal?

Su Changxing froze for a moment and said, ”So he still died?”

Zhou An realized his words were misleading, quickly shook his head and said, ”No, he just separated from us, I don’t know why, after eating that thing, he seemed like a different person.”

Su Changxing showed a look of surprise. Ma Kaiping ate an Extraordinary Crystal and didn’t die, according to what was said, there should be no chance of survival.

That unlucky man actually survived.

”Did he use all his luck on this?”

Su Changxing raised his eyebrows and murmured to himself.

The True Knower was also full of surprise and said, ”Kid, I can guarantee that I didn’t lie, the great True Knower never lies, but randomly running into such a thing with someone, isn’t that a bit strange.”

Su Changxing thought for a moment and said, ”People who win the lottery wouldn’t find it strange. So, he became an Extraordinary?”

The True Knower thought for a moment and said, ”Should be, even if he didn’t become an Extraordinary, he’s not far from it.”

Zhou An didn’t hear what Su Changxing was saying clearly and asked puzzledly, ”Huh, what?”

Su Changxing looked at him, reminded, ”You’d better not put that thing in your mouth, you probably won’t have his kind of luck, hmm, definitely won’t, eating random things can get you killed.”

Zhou An affirmed, ”I’m not that reckless, not like a kid who eats anything randomly.”

With more people, it would definitely attract zombies, slowing down their pace, needing to clear zombies constantly to move forward, but with Su Changxing around, the speed wasn’t too slow.

Zhou An was a bit surprised to see Su Changxing’s clothes were all ripped, and said, ”Brother Su, did you get seriously injured? Your clothes are all torn.”

”Just minor injuries.”

Su Changxing casually cut down an attacking zombie with a single stroke, and said lightly.

Zhou An’s body was stronger than before, but he was still timid in battle, being very cautious, and the other members of the group were also like this.

Su Changxing couldn’t help but say, ”You guys don’t need to be too afraid, these zombies don’t have the ability to infect, even if you get a small injury it’s not a big problem.”

Of course, saying this didn’t have much effect, at the speed these people were clearing zombies, without Su Changxing, it would probably take them most of the day to reach Huang Biao’s base.

Over an hour later, Su Changxing led the group near the base, entered the community, and when they were about to go upstairs, a monkey dashed through the jungle, catching his attention.

Zhou An also saw the monkey and curiously asked, ”A monkey? It’s the first time I’ve seen an animal in this world.”

A woman in the group stammered, ”Monkeys wouldn’t turn into zombies too, would they?”

Su Changxing thought for a moment and said, ”That’s right, it should just be a Zombie Monkey.”

He had encountered such creatures before, looking similar, though these Zombie Monkeys seemed to have average combat capabilities, not even as strong as ordinary zombies, their only advantage was the ability to climb walls.

Zhou An was stunned and said, ”Monkeys turn into zombies too? But it makes sense, we’re all primates, so gorillas would turn into zombies too.”

Su Changxing agreed, ”A reasonable assumption.”

Walking in the stairwell, Su Changxing heard painful wails coming from above, someone was severely injured, in serious pain.

Su Changxing asked thoughtfully, ”How did you guys treat the wounded?”

Zhou An glanced at Su Changxing and said, ”We save who we can, we don’t have a doctor, if the injury is too serious, there’s nothing we can do.”

Upon reaching the fourth floor, they saw someone with a bandaged chest being carried upstairs, face full of pain.

Su Changxing estimated that only Wu Jie could handle such an injury, otherwise, the person would have to lie down for over ten days.

Qin Jue Ming was conveniently in the hall, and seeing Su Changxing and the others arrive, a hint of joy appeared on his face as he walked over and said,

”Brother Su, it’s so good to see you’re safe, and these people are...?”

Su Changxing looked at Qin Jue Ming’s empty sleeves and said, ”They are people who want to join us, could you arrange something for them?”
