A Ghost Story Unfolds: The Cannon Fodder Went Mad by Burning Ghost Money

Chapter 76 The Singer, Oh, Singer 9Based on what the Old Lady said, Lin Xiangjun could only find one important location for the time being—the spot between Building 4 and Building 5.

Lin Xiangjun guessed that this should be the place where ”that girl” died.

Lin Xiangjun judged that ”that girl” was already dead from the emotions in the Old Lady’s words.

She could feel the old woman’s pity and a subtle fear for that girl; the pity might be because she died young, as the elderly often sigh over the accidental deaths of young people.

But what about the fear? Why was that?

Because her death was too unsightly or terrifying? That couldn’t be it, Lin Xiangjun thought. No matter how terrifying a death was, as long as one wasn’t an eyewitness on the scene, they wouldn’t be afraid for long. And if she were an eyewitness, it would be impossible for her to be like the Old Lady, sighing more than feeling fear when speaking of it.

Then there was another possibility.

Her death had caused some kind of long-lasting, inextinguishable, and enduring terror.

To the point that even the neighbors who liked and sympathized with her would be shrouded in a cloud of terror upon hearing her name.

Lin Xiangjun’s eyes suddenly lit up.

Right, ”she” used to live here!

She could also try to find the house where ”she” used to live.

There would definitely be clues inside the house where an important character lived.

Lin Xiangjun immediately packed up and found the door to Room 303. Just as she was about to raise her hand to knock, the door suddenly opened.

The Old Lady was neatly dressed, holding a cloth bag and picking up her long-handled umbrella from the doorway.

Seeing Lin Xiangjun standing at the door, she was a bit surprised: ”Is something the matter, Xiao Lin?”

She had known Lin Xiangjun’s name since signing the contract.

Lin Xiangjun hugged her long-handled umbrella tightly and said somewhat sheepishly, ”Grandma, is there a shop or a vegetable market in our neighborhood? I just moved in and only brought two bags of instant noodles. I want to buy some food to keep at home.”

The Old Lady smiled gently: ”Of course, there’s a small supermarket in the alley with a good variety of things. It just so happens that I’ve run out of rice and need to buy some, so come along with me.”

”Okay, okay. Thank you, Grandma.”

Lin Xiangjun perceptively pressed the elevator button. She didn’t rashly offer to carry things for the Old Lady, but instead asked with feigned curiosity: ”What about the people who came with me? Did they manage to rent rooms too?”

Mentioning this, the Old Lady was full of emotion.

”They did, and they’re all sharing. The economic situation these days is really bad; three grown men squeezed into a one-bedroom apartment. There’s only one bed in that room, how are they going to sleep at night?”

”They’ll probably sleep on the floor; anyway, it’s not cold these days. Although it’s crowded for three people to rent one room, it’s only a hundred yuan per person. They’re just trying to save as much as they can.”

The Old Lady snorted.

”Those few really don’t know the value of their lives. I kindly told them that for an extra fifty or hundred yuan, they could rent a clean room and sleep peacefully. In the end, they all looked at me like I was some unscrupulous merchant and ran off to rent the cheap ones. The houses aren’t mine, and the money doesn’t go into my pocket, yet they made it seem like I was trying to harm them!”

Lin Xiangjun was a bit surprised: ”There are nine of them, so they must have rented at least four rooms, right? Did they not rent even one clean room?”

”What four rooms? They only rented three!”

Speaking of this, the Old Lady sighed heavily.

”Young people nowadays, really, none of them take their own lives seriously...”

Lin Xiangjun calculated silently in her mind.

There were seven men and three women in this instance. The Old Lady said they were all sharing rooms. Han Jingxue and Cheng Shengtian must be staying together, and the remaining seven men were split between two rooms—meaning one room had three people and the other had four.

Oh, living that crowded?

On second thought, she understood why the Old Lady was being so kind to her.

It was likely because she was the only one who had followed the Old Lady’s advice and stayed in a clean room.

It’s normal for people to have a better attitude toward those who take their advice, just as teachers definitely like obedient students.

Lin Xiangjun’s smile grew even sweeter.

”I know Grandma suggested staying in a clean room for our own good. We can be frugal with food, but the place we live must be clean. We can’t just ignore the value of our own lives.”

The Old Lady patted Lin Xiangjun’s shoulder quite approvingly.

”Yes, what could be more important than living well?”

Lin Xiangjun followed along with the Old Lady’s words.

It wasn’t until they were almost at the supermarket entrance that she sighed with feigned casualness.

”I wonder how sad that girl’s family must have been when they heard the news of her passing.”

The Old Lady’s movement to push open the supermarket door paused. Her hand hung in mid-air, and her voice carried a mockery that was half-laughing and half-crying.

”That girl’s parents are long gone.”

”Thud—”

Before the Old Lady could finish her sentence, a heavy, dull sound of something hitting the ground suddenly came from a distance.

Lin Xiangjun instinctively turned her head to look.

Then her eyes widened in shock.

The person lying on the ground was none other than one of the players!

At the time, Lin Xiangjun had roughly looked over everyone’s attire and memorized the obvious markers on each person.

The one lying on the ground now was a male player who didn’t talk much. He was wearing a black ripped short-sleeved shirt with a very obvious and exaggerated LABUBU drawn on it in fluorescent green. Lin Xiangjun had always thought that thing was exceptionally ugly, so it left a particularly deep impression.

At this moment, the male player was lying on the ground with a pool of blood soaking out from under his neck, and it was still gradually spreading.

Lin Xiangjun looked up from where he had fallen and saw the only open window on the sixteenth floor. At the window stood another male player with a face full of shock, who also seemed not to understand why the Fluorescent Green Short Sleeve had suddenly jumped.

Lin Xiangjun was also momentarily stunned; after all, this was the first time she had seen someone jump off a building right in front of her.

The instance had started less than two hours ago; his jumping now was most likely because he had violated a death rule.

Actually, it wasn’t that strange. After all, no one knew any of the rules yet, and making a mistake while operating in the dark was perfectly normal.

The problem was, what did he do?

Lin Xiangjun was deep in thought when a hand suddenly patted her shoulder gently.

She whipped her head around, only to see the Old Lady comforting her with a gentle expression.

”Don’t be afraid, he just made that girl angry.”

That girl?

Seeing that Lin Xiangjun’s expression was still dazed, the Old Lady thought she was frightened out of her wits, so she sighed again and pushed open the supermarket door.

”In our Xieyou Alley, one’s attire and appearance are very important. Like that young man, non-compliant attire and appearance will bring disaster.

”I told him too, not to wear such eye-catching clothes... Sigh, young people nowadays are not obedient at all.”

The Old Lady seemed accustomed to someone jumping off a building.

She even comforted Lin Xiangjun: ”Don’t worry about it. Someone specialized will come to handle it in a while. By the time we finish shopping, it should be mostly taken care of.”
