A Ghost Story Unfolds: The Cannon Fodder Went Mad by Burning Ghost Money

Chapter 54 The Capital to Make a LivingThis was why Lin Xiangjun immediately pressed her ID card onto the stone tablet the moment she left the instance.

It was also why the village chief was so anxious to stop her.

If Lin Xiangjun obtained a legal identity, the village chief would have to help her adapt to the environment just like any other villager, which also meant the chief’s lunch would go right up in smoke.

With no food to eat, she naturally pulled a long face.

The old village chief’s expression was gloomy; when Lin Xiangjun took the notebook from her, she even had to use a bit of force.

Several maggots crawled out from the wrinkles on her face, which, combined with her sallow eyes and eerie expression, made her look like a living malevolent ghost.

But she stared at Lin Xiangjun for a long time, and the other party didn’t show the slightest hint of fear.

Lin Xiangjun tugged at the notebook forcefully, and seeing she couldn’t pull it away, she gave up decisively, stepped back, and reached out toward the village chief: ”Chief, give me the form. I’ll fill it out quickly so I don’t delay your business.”

The implication: Old geezer, let go already, you’re in my way!

Only then did the old village chief sneer and slowly let go.

”Youngster, you’d better look closely. There’s only one copy of this thing per person. Once it’s filled out, it can’t be changed.”

Lin Xiangjun didn’t understand what this warning meant at first, but when she looked down, she raised her eyebrows in surprise.

This form was actually covered from top to bottom in Weird Script.

Probably because she had left the instance, the system’s thoughtful translation service had failed, and the long string of twisted characters made Lin Xiangjun’s temples throb.

This long string of characters was indeed in the format of a form, but Lin Xiangjun couldn’t understand it.

A headache.

The same kind of headache she got when she was learning English years ago.

Fortunately, Lin Xiangjun was no longer a student and didn’t have to suffer the torment of English anymore. She just glanced at the form and pushed it back.

The old village chief grinned, revealing a smile of someone impatient to start their meal.

So what if this human moved fast and became a villager?

As long as she didn’t fill out the form and report it, and didn’t get a Residence Permit or Property Deed, she could still use some means to eat her.

The smell of human flesh is so fragrant...

The old village chief closed her eyes in intoxication and took a deep breath.

So fragrant...

She hadn’t eaten human flesh in a long time and had almost forgotten what it tasted like. She only remembered the last piece she got was from a fat man’s chest; one bite and the grease flowed down her throat like water.

That taste was so fragrant she would drool even in her dreams.

Unfortunately, after that meal, she hadn’t eaten meat for a very long time.

The old village chief twitched her nose, feeling as if the fragrance of human flesh was still at the tip of her nose...

Wait, no, this wasn’t the fragrance of human flesh!

The old village chief snapped her eyes open.

A thousand underworld currency placed before the old village chief?

She stared at the stack of underworld currency in shock, swallowing her saliva repeatedly as the maggots in her wrinkles squirmed even more violently.

Lin Xiangjun waved the thousand underworld currency in front of her eyes, then waved it again, saying with a pleasant smile, ”Chief, did you close your eyes because you’re sleepy? Then let’s fill out the form quickly, and you can go rest once we’re done.”

The old village chief’s gaze was as if glued to the underworld currency with superglue, unable to move away. When Lin Xiangjun’s hand moved left, her head turned left; when Lin Xiangjun’s hand moved right, her head turned right, looking just like a slow-motion electric fan.

”Chief? Chief?”

The chief swallowed another mouthful of spit and couldn’t help but grip the form in her hand tightly, asking, ”Where did you get so much underworld currency?”

A thousand!

Even if you took her old bones apart and sold them, they wouldn’t fetch a thousand!

Hearing this, Lin Xiangjun’s expression immediately became profound: ”It’s like this. I did some small business before. I wouldn’t say I’m worth tens of thousands, but having a wealth of a few thousand is more than enough. This bit of underworld currency... is all a thank-you gift for you.”

Since it was a thank-you gift, it definitely meant she needed the old village chief’s help.

The old village chief swallowed her spit again and again, her eyeballs wishing they could be plucked out and stuck onto the underworld currency.

But she seemed to have some reservations, still clutching that stack of yellowed, rough-looking forms, even though her fingers were already anxiously rubbing the paper until it was wrinkled.

Oh, she has quite a bit of self-control.

Lin Xiangjun fanned the thousand out like a fan and slowly fanned herself twice: ”Oh, is this matter hard to handle? Then I’ll go see if there are any other kind-hearted people... kind-hearted ghosts in our village who can help. There must be other residents in our village, right?”

Hearing this, the village chief’s eyes widened suddenly.

Giving so much underworld currency to someone else? That won’t do!

Her voice was somewhat distorted by urgency, and her whole body suddenly leaned forward. One or two maggots even fell from her face and twisted desperately on the ground, looking strange and disgusting: ”No need!!!”

Realizing her loss of composure, the old village chief coughed twice and returned to her previous position: ”What I mean is, as the village chief, helping a villager complete a small task like filling out a form is only right, only right.”

While saying ”only right,” she quickly snatched the thousand and tucked it into her pocket.

Lin Xiangjun: Tsk, why do all these weird beings have pockets?

Qin Jianyuan has one, the old village chief has one, yet she’s the only one who entered the instance without a single pocket on her?

Once the money was in her pocket, the village chief’s expression underwent a 180-degree turn, just like the face-changing art of the national treasure.

She tucked the form she had been holding into her bosom and pulled out another crumpled, shrunken form from her clothes, along with a dirty, capless ballpoint pen.

A hint of a smile flickered in Lin Xiangjun’s eyes.

It really is good to have money; a mistake that could easily cost a life can be settled so casually.

The weird world doesn’t show a good face to humans, but it does things with a sense of logic and a fairness whose criteria are unknown.

That is, the fairness it considers to be fair.

The weird world has its own evaluation criteria and is relatively subjective, but most of the time, it follows objective laws.

For example, now, when the weird world has just descended, how could it provide a bunch of forms written in Weird Script for players to fill out?

Wouldn’t that be directly sending people to their deaths?

So Lin Xiangjun guessed that the form with the Weird Script wasn’t the real form—at least not for her.

As expected.

Lin Xiangjun took the ballpoint pen and examined the new form.

A4 paper, standard script, and except for being a bit crumpled, it was entirely a product of a printer.

The form required the player to state their name, ID number—the new ID issued after the descent of the weird world—home address, and Eight Characters of Birth; those with bank cards also had to fill in their bank card numbers.

Lin Xiangjun answered each one seriously.

When the final stroke was finished, the form emitted a faint white light, circling twice in the air like Barbie movie magic before splitting into two clumps of white light that landed in Lin Xiangjun’s palm.

A red Property Deed.

A Furong Village Villager Pass.

Lin Xiangjun felt a sense of relief as the dust settled. She looked at the two documents with joy, knowing she finally had a place to establish herself in the weird world.
