After I Fully Prepared for the Apocalypse, the Ungrateful Cried with Regret

Damon Young replied, ”Unfortunately, Freya Finch is already dead.”

”Even if she’s dead, I’m taking her body back.”

Nina Jacobs had no intention of giving up. She had a feeling these people were hiding something.

Even if Freya Finch was dead, she had to see it for herself.

Just as Damon Young was about to press the issue, a voice interrupted him.

”Damon Young, stop stirring up trouble.

Even if Felix Finch is gravely injured, you have to let him see his child one last time!”

A scrawny, middle-aged man stepped out and said angrily.

Nina Jacobs’s expression flickered. ’See the child one last time?’

’It seems Freya Finch isn’t dead yet.’

The man looked to be in his fifties. He still carried an air of authority when he spoke, but likely due to hunger, he was gasping for breath after just a few words.

”Dad.”

Kelly Ainsworth called out from the side.

”Mr. Ainsworth, you don’t call the shots here,”

”You and your daughter can barely fend for yourselves. You really have time to meddle in other people’s business?”

Damon Young said, pointing rudely at Mr. Ainsworth.

Mr. Ainsworth seemed completely unafraid. ”If anything happens to me or my daughter, you can all forget about ever using electricity again!”

”Daughter, bring your friend over. I’ll take her to see the child,”

Mr. Ainsworth said.

Kelly Ainsworth nodded and said to Nina Jacobs, ”Let’s go.”

”The child isn’t dead, right?”

Nina Jacobs asked eagerly.

Despite Damon Young and his men still staring at her.

Mr. Ainsworth sighed. ”She’s not dead, but she’s breathing more out than in. She could go at any second.”

”I think she just wants to see her dad, so she’s holding on by a thread.”

He stood guard here day and night, knowing that Damon Young and his group were just hoping Freya Finch would finally stop breathing.

Felix Finch had saved their lives, and he had entrusted his child to him before he left.

As long as Freya Finch was still breathing, he wouldn’t let them touch her.

Kelly Ainsworth was also wiping away tears.

”Freya was already severely malnourished. After three straight days with a high fever, I’m afraid all the moisture in her body has been burned away.”

”Later, my dad found a little water to give her, but she couldn’t swallow any of it.”

The father and daughter led Nina Jacobs into a room that was still relatively clean and tidy.

A small, frail figure lay on the bed.

She was little more than skin and bones.

”Freya, your father’s friend is here to see you.”

Kelly Ainsworth called out gently, but there was no response.

Nina Jacobs leaned over to check for breathing and found that, just as Mr. Ainsworth had said, it was incredibly faint.

’But as long as she’s not dead, maybe I can save her.’

”I have a special medicine.”

Nina Jacobs pulled a bottle of ”Healing Potion” from her backpack.

It was the undiluted potion.

”It’s no use. We can’t get her to take anything.”

As Kelly Ainsworth spoke, she watched Nina Jacobs take out a syringe attached to a thin, flexible tube.

She skillfully inserted the tube into Freya Finch’s mouth and slowly administered the liquid.

Mr. Ainsworth watched in astonishment.

’Did... did that really go in?’

A few minutes later, Nina Jacobs received a ”Selfless Savior” notification from the system.

Only then did Nina Jacobs relax.

She didn’t let her relief show, however. Instead, she turned to Mr. Ainsworth and asked:

”Are you an electrician?”

A light was on in the dilapidated room, and an old fan whirred steadily.

To have electricity in ruins like this, there had to be a skilled technician.

Kelly Ainsworth answered, ”My dad is a well-known electrical engineer around here. Back in the day, whenever the local factories had tough problems with circuits or electrical systems, they had to consult him.”

”That’s all in the past. This skill is useless now.”

Mr. Ainsworth waved his hand, signaling for Kelly Ainsworth to stop talking about the past.

Nina Jacobs, however, looked very interested.

”I plan on taking Freya Finch out of here. Would you two like to come with us?”

Leave... with them?

The father and daughter were both stunned.

”Would it be difficult for you to get the power running in a place that has nothing?”

Nina Jacobs had given this a lot of thought over the past few days.

If she was going to build a temporary shelter, she had to consider every angle, and electricity was a major hurdle.

Finding a survivor with this expertise was a rare opportunity, which was why she proposed the idea.

Mr. Ainsworth thought for a moment before answering.

”As long as there’s food to eat, Kelly and I are in.”

Kelly Ainsworth was also a Gold Element Superpower User. The father-daughter duo had rigged up the electricity here using old equipment and circuit boards they’d scavenged from the surrounding ruins.

They couldn’t run high-power appliances like air conditioners, but they had no problem with daily electricity needs.

”So where are you all going next?”

Kelly Ainsworth asked hesitantly.

Nina Jacobs shook her head. ”I’m not sure yet.”

”Will Felix Finch be there?”

Kelly Ainsworth asked again.

’If this is someone Felix Finch trusts, maybe it’s worth taking a gamble.’

Nina Jacobs explained the situation to them truthfully, and in the end, the father and daughter made their decision.

They would leave with Nina Jacobs.

”We leave before dark.”

With the plan settled, Nina Jacobs turned her gaze to Freya Finch.

Although she still looked pale, her breathing had started to even out.

Nina Jacobs then took out some food and water to help them regain their strength and gave it to the father and daughter.

”Food!”

Forgetting her manners, Kelly Ainsworth’s eyes were glued to the items in her hands.

Mr. Ainsworth’s hands trembled as he held the dry flatbread. Before it even reached his lips, his throat was already working with an involuntary swallow.

They had been hungry and thirsty for so long.

They had even forgotten the taste of food itself.

Seeing them devour the food, Nina Jacobs left them undisturbed.

She tried to feed Freya Finch some Electrolyte Water. When she saw the child begin to swallow, Mr. Ainsworth, who was standing by, burst into tears of relief.

”I thought...

I thought I’d never be able to face Felix Finch again.”

He had originally planned to wait for Freya Finch to breathe her last, then sneak away with her body.

’If Felix Finch knew the people he’d saved had done this to his own daughter, he would never be able to rest in peace...’

Listening to her father, Kelly Ainsworth just kept shedding tears.

Just then, the door to the room was kicked open.

Damon Young glared viciously at the people inside.

”Everyone see this? They’re in here hoarding food and eating in secret!

If we hadn’t shown up, who knows, maybe they would’ve moved on to eating meat!”

”You—what nonsense are you spouting?”

Mr. Ainsworth was instantly enraged.

’They can accuse me of anything,’ he thought, ’but I would rather die than do something like that.’

”Mr. Ainsworth, where did you get food?

Are you hiding a private stash? If you have food, hand it over now!”

a stout woman demanded.

”Yeah, how could you possibly have water? You must have stolen and hidden everyone’s supplies!”

One after another, the crowd started chiming in, ready to surge forward and loot.

”You’re insane! All of you are insane!”

Mr. Ainsworth watched as the crowd swarmed into the room. They snatched the remaining water from the father and daughter’s hands. One person would take two gulps before being kicked aside by another who would grab the bottle for themself.

”This father and daughter didn’t hoard your supplies,

but I can’t say the same for certain other people.”

Nina Jacobs’s words brought the crowd to a halt.

The mention of supplies seemed to sober them up considerably.

”What’s that supposed to mean?”

A grimy, disheveled man stepped forward to ask.
