Captain Wren?

Nina Jacobs felt she had to meet him.

”I can’t believe there are still people alive in the valley...”

This was something Cordelia had never expected.

They had all thought the valley had completely fallen, with no survivors left inside.

”Behind every success they flaunt, there’s always a price paid in blood,

it’s just that they aren’t the ones paying it.”

Annie Stone spoke as if she had seen through it all.

The two of them seemed to have a lot more to say. Nina didn’t want to intrude any longer, so after a quick word with Cordelia, she went upstairs first.

”Cordelia, you could totally stay here. Captain Wren’s wife is a Water Element Superpower User, so no one ever has to worry about water,

and Captain Wren is fair, rewarding good deeds and punishing bad ones. He never does anything shady.”

Changing the subject, Annie Stone began to earnestly persuade her.

After everything she had been through recently, she had come to a realization. The base might be safe, but it was a dog-eat-dog world.

The base’s relief association, which they had once admired, turned out to be nothing but a bunch of hypocrites when they encountered them on the road.

Most people were only out for themselves, or for some baseless fame and fortune.

Instead of helping others, it was better to help herself. She might as well just rely on her own efforts here.

Cordelia smiled after hearing this. ”It certainly sounds better than the base, but I’ve already promised Nina that we’ll go to her place first.”

Annie Stone was a little surprised.

But she quickly accepted it. ”Looks like you’re just like me. Since things are the way they are, we might as well do what we want to do first.”

”By the way, where’s Aeliana? I haven’t seen her.”

Cordelia asked.

”She went out on a supply run. One of her old colleagues who once saved her life is here, and the two of them are getting along great now.”

Annie Stone replied with a smile.

When Nina Jacobs returned to her room, she found the cat still eating the food and cat food she had left out.

MEOW—

Seeing Nina Jacobs return, Lexy immediately stopped chowing down and went to greet her.

”Let’s rest here for today. I’m planning to go out again later.”

Nina Jacobs was still planning her trip to Griston.

But she wouldn’t dare go recklessly without first figuring out the strength of the people there.

After Lexy had eaten its fill, Nina Jacobs took another white water tank out of her storage space.

She had found these water tanks in Veridia Town. There were eight in total, and she had given one to Cordelia.

Each tank had a capacity of 900 liters. Including the one with Cordelia, Lexy had already filled nearly three large tanks in just two or three days.

And that didn’t even account for the water used by the seven of them over the past few days.

”Lexy, you’re amazing.”

Nina Jacobs praised.

She had noticed a pattern: Lexy didn’t mind using its Superpower. In fact, if she didn’t provide a container for it, the cat would go find its own containers to fill with water.

Now, seeing the water tank that was half-full, Lexy leaped onto it with enthusiasm.

This time, Lexy filled the water tank completely.

During this time, Nina Jacobs activated her ”Five Senses Enhancement.” Amidst the multitude of sounds, she found Thaddeus Wren’s voice.

But as Nina listened, a trace of confusion appeared on her face.

’Is Thaddeus Wren holding someone captive?’

”...I told you, if you don’t let me go, I won’t create another drop of water.”

It was a woman’s voice.

After a long moment, Thaddeus Wren sighed and said:

”I can let you go. I can even go with you. But if you’re going *there*, then it’s out of the question.”

”Why? They won’t kill me.

I just want to use them to get revenge for my family. Why can’t you just let me do it?”

The woman started crying as she spoke.

Thaddeus Wren seemed to be comforting her softly:

”They won’t kill you, but they do want to use you.

Have you thought about what happens after? When you’re no longer useful to them, what do you think they’ll do to you?”

”I don’t care! You were the one who said you could help me get revenge, that’s why you dragged me out of there! I didn’t even want to live anymore.”

”Just pretend I’m already dead and let me go to Griston, okay?”

The woman seemed exhausted. The metal chains clanked wildly as she struggled, but all Nina Jacobs heard next was the sound of a door closing.

’The woman sounds like a Water Element Superpower User,’ Nina thought. ’It must be Thaddeus Wren’s wife.’

’But why does she want to go to Griston?’

Just then, there was a knock on the door.

Nina Jacobs had already put the water tank away. The person at the door was, surprisingly, Marcellus.

”Um... I found some cat food...”

Marcellus took out a cloth pouch from his coat, which contained a handful of dry cat food pellets.

He looked at Lexy, wanting to get closer but not quite daring to.

”Is that for Lexy?”

Nina Jacobs was a bit surprised. ’Could Marcellus be a cat lover?’

Marcellus nodded. ”I used to have a cat. When... that happened, it shielded me. That’s the only reason I wasn’t bitten. But my cat...”

Marcellus’s expression turned sad. ”You know, cats are usually selfish and wary creatures. I never thought it would go that far for me.”

That was why seeing Lexy reminded him of his own cat.

Especially after hearing from Nina that Lexy had helped her kill the Zombie Rats.

”Come in.”

Nina Jacobs opened the door wider.

No wonder Marcellus hadn’t made a peep, even when Lexy had scratched him so badly.

The back of Marcellus’s hand was completely red now, and the bloody scratches looked even more alarming.

”I have some antiseptic here.”

Nina Jacobs took out a small bottle of Blood Stopping Spray and sprayed it on Marcellus’s hand twice.

Lexy sniffed the handful of cat food, then disdainfully flicked its tail and walked away...

”It just ate its fill.”

Nina Jacobs explained.

”Oh, good, that’s good. I was worried it might be hungry.”

Marcellus didn’t mind. In fact, he was quite happy that Lexy wasn’t attacking him anymore.

”With so many people in this tower, do you only have one Water Element Superpower User?”

Nina Jacobs took the opportunity to ask.

Marcellus’s eyes had been following Lexy. Hearing Nina’s question, he nodded and said:

”That’s right. The captain’s wife is a very powerful Water Element Superpower User. Even though there are only a little over two hundred people in the tower, she’s more than enough.”

Nina Jacobs nodded. ”I’d like to speak with Captain Wren alone. Can you tell me where I can usually find him?”

”You want to see Captain Wren?”

Marcellus finally tore his gaze away from the cat, looking at Nina with a hint of suspicion.

”Don’t get the wrong idea. I just want to ask him about Griston,”

Nina Jacobs explained.

”Oh, I see.”

Marcellus relaxed. ”Captain Wren is usually out scavenging for supplies. Today is an exception. He’s in the tower right now, so I can take you to him in a bit.”

There weren’t too many rules in the tower; anyone could ask to see the captain.

”Thanks,” Nina Jacobs said, relieved.

”Nothing to thank me for. The little cat master likes you so much, and you take great care of it. Seeing you two together... I feel like I’m being healed, too.”

Marcellus felt the back of his hand didn’t hurt as much anymore.

Just as he stood up to take Nina Jacobs to see Thaddeus Wren, the alarm on his body suddenly started vibrating.

”Holy shit, are there zombies?”

Marcellus explained that the alarm he carried only reacted when zombies were attacking.

Soon, Nina Jacobs also heard the chaotic sounds of people running inside the tower.

”It’s fine, it’s just a Level One alert. The zombies should be...”

Before Marcellus could finish his sentence, the alarm in his hand began to vibrate frantically again.

”Holy shit, it’s a Level Five alert?!” Marcellus exclaimed in shock.
