Dungeon Corpse Stacker: I Absorb Everything to Become Ominous Monarch

The quartz porthole gave way with a sharp, explosive crack.

Under the steady downward pressure of Renan’s void dagger, the six-inch laminated viewing glass fractured into a thousand milky veins, followed immediately by the violent outward expulsion of forty gallons of chilled fluorocarbon brine. The dense, chemical liquid cascaded over the jagged edges of the torn armor plate, washing away the grease and soot before pouring across the hot basalt below in hissing sheets of pale foam.

General Marcus Vance tumbled through the breached oval opening, landing heavily upon the twisted deck of the mech’s lower groin plating.

His breathing mask ripped free from his face, dangling uselessly across his shoulder by its corrugated rubber supply tube.

Vance’s lungs seized violently as real atmosphere rushed into his windpipe, the cold sea air burning his throat like raw vinegar after thirty minutes of breathing oxygenated liquid. He coughed convulsively, retching mouthfuls of bitter amber fluid onto the steel plates, his physical hands clawing at the non-slip coating of the hull to keep from tumbling forty feet down onto the rocks.

At the base of his skull, the three titanium neural shunts were still embedded in his cervical vertebrae.

Without the cushioning dampener of the immersion bath, the severed sensory loops flooded his brainstem with catastrophic diagnostic feedback.

Red and white flashes exploded behind Vance’s retinas, accompanied by a high, deafening screech that sounded like an industrial drill boring directly through his eardrums. Every severed motor lead, every burned-out solenoid in the sixty-eight-ton chassis registered inside his nervous system as raw, tearing agony, causing the thick muscles along his neck to bunch into rigid knots.

Renan stepped down from the sheared breastplate, his leather boots coming to a balanced rest three paces from the coughing general.

He held the void dagger loosely at his side, its dark spine humming with the excess thermal energy he had stripped from the railgun capacitors.

”The water in the tank was clean, Vance,” Renan spoke, his voice calm, flat, and untouched by the freezing offshore wind. ”The air out here is cold.”

Vance reached behind his neck with trembling, grease-stained fingers.

With a hoarse, ragged roar of stubborn military pride, he seized the central titanium connector at his spine and ripped it out by the root.

A sharp spray of dark venous blood speckled the gray armor plate, followed by two more wet tearing sounds as Vance wrenched the remaining two shunts free, hurling the twisted metal pins onto the stone below.

He leaned his back against the mech’s severed hydraulic housing, panting heavily, his gray hair plastered to his forehead with sweat and fluorocarbon residue. His compression suit was torn at the knees, but his steel-framed spectacles, miraculously unbroken inside his sealed pocket, were shoved back onto his crooked nose by shaking, calloused fingers.

Through the salt-streaked glass of his spectacles, Vance glared up at Renan.

”The carrier group has sixty more strike planes in the air,” Vance rasped, his voice raw from the chemical brine, yet carrying the iron authority that had commanded armies from the Arctic rifts to the Persian Gulf. ”The third fleet in San Diego cleared their moorings two hours ago. You killed Arthur, you broke my frame, but you cannot out-produce the United States Navy. We will pave this entire continental shelf with five-inch armor plate until your dead ships cannot find the sun.”

Renan did not raise his voice to match the general’s defiance.

He walked past Vance, stepping over the tangled mass of severed fiber-optic cables to stand directly before the central power compartment situated behind the immersion cradle.

Inside the reinforced titanium cage, the twin Westinghouse compact fission reactors sat glowing with a dangerous, unsteady azure luminescence.

The secondary cooling pumps had died when the Colossus Prime’s spine was severed.

The heat inside the core chamber had climbed to fourteen hundred degrees, the braided lead shielding beginning to droop like warm wax around the central fuel rods. A high-pitched, automated klaxon was chattering inside the housing, flashing a yellow hazard cipher across the emergency monitor:

[Warning: Core Temperature Exceeds Critical Threshold] [Containment Integrity: 28%] [Estimated Time to Prompt Supercriticality: 90 Seconds]

”Do you know what happens when sixty pounds of weapons-grade uranium goes supercritical forty fathoms above a fault line, scavenger?” Vance wheezed, leaning his head back against the ruined bulkhead, a cold, bloodied grin pulling at his lips. ”It will flash three cubic miles of seawater into steam in four milliseconds. Your basalt island will turn into dust, your sister’s hospital will lose its roof, and your precious trench will become a radioactive ditch that no living thing can touch for three centuries.”

Renan turned his head slightly, looking down at the grinning general.

”You speak as though this heat belongs to you, Vance.”

Renan reached forward with his bare right hand.

He did not use the void dagger. He did not ask Shadow Commander Thorne to smother the machine with mud.

He plunged his bare fingers straight through the lead-tungsten containment grille, driving his hand into the core housing until his knuckles brushed against the white-hot zirconium cladding of the primary reactor rod.

Vance’s grin died.

His bloodshot eyes widened behind his spectacles as the expected blinding flash of nuclear prompt criticality failed to appear.

Instead of an explosion, a sound like a starving beast inhaling a long, deep draft of cold water echoed through the chassis.

[System Notice: High-Density Fission Mass Detected] [Skill Activated: Monarch Devourment Protocol] [Absorbing Unstable Nuclear Core: Twin Westinghouse Assemblies] [Converting Raw Ionizing Radiation into Sovereign Mass Density...]

The blinding blue luminescence inside the reactor core did not flare outward; it was dragged inward, funneling straight into the palm of Renan’s hand in spiraling ribbons of incandescent cyan fire.

The fourteen-hundred-degree zirconium rods did not melt their mounts; their thermal energy, their kinetic vibration, and their decaying atomic mass were systematically unraveled, compressed, and funneled through the silver-violet channels beneath Renan’s skin straight into the core resting beneath his breastbone.

The warning klaxon inside the mech stopped mid-chirp.

The temperature gauge on the display tumbled from fourteen hundred degrees to zero, then dropped further until a thick, white crust of freezing frost spread across the lead shielding, creeping over the titanium housing in delicate, crystalline ferns.

Renan pulled his hand back.

In his open palm sat two harmless, cold cylinders of depleted metal, stripped entirely of their radioisotopes, dark as charcoal and brittle as dry slate.

He closed his fingers, crushing the spent metal into fine black dust that drifted away on the morning gale.

Renan turned back to face General Vance.

The American general was staring at the frost-covered reactor housing with the hollow, broken expression of an engineer whose entire universe of formulas and physical constants had just been erased by an indifferent hand.

His knuckles unclasped from the deckplates, his posture slumping as the last vestige of imperial defiance drained from his gray face.

”You ate the fire,” Vance whispered, his voice barely audible over the lap of the ocean swells forty feet below. ”You didn’t shield against it. You didn’t suppress the chain reaction. You swallowed the split atom like bread.”

Renan took two slow, measured strides, stopping until the toe of his leather boot rested against Vance’s knee.

He reached down, his fingers closing around the collar of Vance’s neural compression suit, lifting the sixty-year-old general onto his feet with an effortless, steady motion that carried the weight of an unmovable mountain.

To the south, through the thinning mist, the distant horn of the USS Titan sounded three long, mournful blasts across forty miles of water, signaling the total tactical disengagement of the American Seventh Expeditionary Fleet.

Vance looked past Renan’s shoulder toward the southern horizon, listening to the horn of his own flagship running away from the trench.

A dry, bitter rasp broke from the general’s throat. ”The navy is pulling back. Thornecraft gave the order from Washington.”

”The navy is smart,” Renan said softly, his violet eyes locking onto Vance’s dilated pupils. ”They know when the iron has lost its bite.”

Renan drew the void dagger, resting the cold flat of the obsidian blade against the side of Vance’s throat, right over the pulsing jugular vein where the blood was still thick with fluorocarbon residue.

”You brought your machines to my house, Vance,” Renan whispered, the shadows beneath their boots rising in a slow, boiling pool of pure midnight. ”Now it is time to pay for the basalt.”
