The sight that greeted him sent a chill down his spine.

As his consciousness swept through the laboratory, he noticed rows of pristine white experimental tables lining the right side of the room.

Each table restrained a slender, blue-skinned figure.

The Lord of the Mist was no stranger to the Blue-skinned Assassins.

Since entering human society, he had frequently been targeted by these assassins.

This had always puzzled him deeply.

He was certain he had never encountered any race resembling the Blue-skinned Assassins, let alone incurred their enmity.

The blue-skinned clan’s relentless pursuit of him defied logic.

When Feng Qi later encountered Blue-skinned Assassins, his suspicions deepened.

Yet the true reason behind their hostility remained a mystery.

He resolved to investigate this matter thoroughly after dealing with the Scarlet Research Institute.

Now, seeing a Blue-skinned Assassin within the Spirit Energy Clan’s secret research base, he couldn’t help but suspect that these assassins might be specially engineered lifeforms created by the Spirit Energy Clan.

These creatures could be specifically designed for covert operations like assassinations.

They might even be part of the Spirit Energy Clan’s long-term strategic plans for the future.

After all, every clan aware of the impending ”Great Tide’s Descent” had formulated elaborate plans for the future.

These clans shared a common trait:

Their strategic thinking always revolved around shaping the future to their advantage.

For example, Feng Qi’s own future strategy involved sacrificing all of humanity and vast numbers of domain races to obtain unparalleled, terrifying power.

With a massive reserve of qi blood, he could even create new bodies for his clansmen, resurrecting them.

The Mist Clan would rise from the ashes.

Combined with the vast resources he would accumulate, this would enable his clansmen to grow rapidly.

He would no longer fight alone.

If his plan succeeded,

he would undoubtedly secure a place in the future’s struggle for dominance among the ten thousand clans.

Other future plans included the Black Shadow Faction’s ”Black Reaper Project,” a shadowy operation behind the Technology Research Institute.

He didn’t know the specifics of the project, but having attended related meetings at the institute, he understood its critical importance to the Black Shadow Faction. It was the core pillar of their future strategy.

This led him to suspect that special lifeforms like the Blue-skinned Assassin might be entirely new creatures created by the Spirit Energy Clan using their vast knowledge. They could be integral components of the clan’s future plans, perhaps even key elements.

If this theory held true, it would explain why the Blue-skinned Assassin was so relentlessly pursuing him. After all, he did have a history of conflict with the Spirit Energy Clan.

Though the scale of their animosity varied, he had assumed the Spirit Energy Clan had put aside their past grievances after entering the human world. They had even proactively contacted him after his descent.

He never imagined these treacherous bastards would be plotting behind his back.

Yet, upon further reflection, this theory seemed illogical. If the Spirit Energy Clan truly wanted to eliminate him, they would have struck long ago, when he was at his weakest.

His clansmen had all perished during the pathfinding expedition, leaving him the sole survivor to descend into the human world with his Domain Field. It was during this vulnerable period that he had first encountered a member of the Spirit Energy Clan.

Their interaction had been surprisingly amicable. The Spirit Energy Clan member had even volunteered information about the human world.

He had made it clear that the Spirit Energy Clan and humanity should keep to their own affairs, letting bygones be bygones.

Therefore, if the Spirit Energy Clan wanted to eliminate him, they wouldn’t resort to such crude assassination methods.

He gazed again at the blue-skinned creature restrained on the experimental table, his mind filled with questions.

The Blue-skinned Assassin’s attack was likely unrelated to the Spirit Energy Clan, but he couldn’t rule out the possibility that the creature was a special being created by them.

Just then, red lights flashed on in the base’s laboratory.

Several spirit energy shockwaves suddenly pierced his consciousness like thorns.

The Lord of the Mist felt a sharp pain in his head.

Realizing the Secret Base’s detection devices had sensed his mental probe, he decisively retreated through the sewer tunnels, choosing not to linger.

At this stage, he had no desire to engage with the Spirit Energy Clan.

Their power disparity was too great; meaningful dialogue or alliance was impossible.

With this thought, he accelerated his retreat.

Moments later, the Lord of the Mist hovered at a sewer junction.

His mental perception expanded in all directions.

Confirming no other lifeforms were nearby, the gray mist began to coalesce, eventually forming a human shape.

Clothing materialized from the mist and automatically draped itself over him.

The Lord of the Mist retrieved his Tiger Soul Special Plane from the gray mist and dialed a number.

But before the call could connect, it was abruptly cut off.

A message appeared on his phone:

Signal positioning detector detected nearby. Call automatically disconnected.

Realizing the Spirit Energy Clan had installed signal interception and positioning devices in the sewers, he immediately transformed into mist and drifted upward through the pipes.

Moments later, he emerged into the outside world.

Leaning against a streetlight pole, he pulled the Tiger Soul Special Plane from his pocket and dialed Feng Qi’s number again.

This time, the Tiger Soul Special Plane connected without issue.

Feng Qi’s voice came through the line:

”Old Mist, did the plan succeed?”

”Not so fast. The plan hasn’t even begun yet. I just made an unexpected discovery along the way.”

”I think this discovery might help us understand the origins of the blue-skinned creatures.”

”Gurgle... gurgle... he~tui! Tell me more,” Feng Qi said, spitting out toothpaste foam before speaking urgently.

”Here’s what happened: immediately after entering Twilight City, I was spotted by military personnel. To evade capture, I had to hide in the sewers...”

Next, the Lord of the Mist detailed everything he had witnessed in the sewers of Twilight City’s western district to Feng Qi, including his speculation about the Blue-skinned Assassin’s origins.

After hearing the Lord of the Mist’s account, Feng Qi was left with numerous questions.

He knew more about the Blue-skinned Assassin than the Lord of the Mist did.

He suspected that the Blue-skinned Assassin had been captured by the Spirit Energy Clan while attempting to steal the Holy Spirit Consciousness Repository, which led to its being placed on an experimental table for research.

However, many mysteries remained unresolved.

If the Blue-skinned Assassin was a special life form created by the Spirit Energy Clan, what was their purpose in doing so?

Why would the Spirit Energy Clan build such a mysterious laboratory in the sewers of Twilight City?

Everything about this situation reeked of the extraordinary.
