Harry Potter: Most Annoying System Ever

The revelation dropped into the Headmaster’s office with the concussive force of a physical blow.

As Remus Lupin meticulously detailed the impossible truth—the unregistered Animagi, the possibility of a switched Secret Keeper, the faked death, and the twelve-year masquerade as a family pet—the reactions in the room ranged from profound shock to visceral revulsion.

Professor McGonagall sank into a nearby chintz armchair, her hand flying to her chest. She stared at the cowering grey rat in the iron cage, her mind reeling. ”An Animagus,” she whispered, her voice trembling with disbelief. ”Right under my nose. And Peter... alive. If Peter is alive, and hiding...”

She looked up at Dumbledore, the horrifying implication settling over her. ”Albus. If Peter is guilty... then Sirius Black...”

”Is likely innocent of the crimes he was convicted of,” Dumbledore finished gravely.

”Bloody hell,” Ron Weasley choked out, stepping backward until he bumped into his older brother. He stared at the cage with wide, horrified eyes. ”I let him sleep in my bed. I carried him in my pocket. He... he’s a grown man!”

Percy looked physically ill, his usually pristine complexion turning a sallow green. He swallowed hard, looking away from the cage in pure disgust.

Harry Potter, however, was paralyzed. He looked from Lupin to Dumbledore, his green eyes wide and confused.

”Wait,” Harry interrupted, his voice shaking. ”I thought it was Sirius Black who betrayed my parents. Everyone said he was the one who told Voldemort where they were hiding. That’s why he broke out of Azkaban! To finish the job and kill me!”

Lupin turned to Harry, his expression etched with a profound, agonizing sorrow.

”I believed it too, Harry,” Lupin admitted softly, his voice cracking. ”I didn’t want to, but I was out of options. All the proof was against him. There were dozens of Muggle witnesses who swore they saw Sirius blast Peter into oblivion. And we were all told—by Sirius and James themselves—that Sirius was the Secret Keeper.”

Lupin shook his head, running a scarred hand through his graying hair.

”But I also know Sirius,” Lupin continued, a faint, bitter smile touching his lips. ”I know how his mind works. It is completely in line with him to change the Secret Keeper at the absolute last moment as a brilliant, arrogant piece of misdirection. A grand prank to outsmart the Dark Lord.”

He pointed a trembling finger at the cage.

”And Peter hiding for twelve years as a rat proves his guilt. An innocent man does not fake his own death and live in a sewer while his best friend rots in Azkaban.”

Lupin took a step closer to Harry, his eyes filled with a desperate, pleading sincerity.

”Sirius was designated as your godfather, Harry,” Lupin revealed gently. ”He loved James like a brother. He loved you. I should have known to trust that fact. I should have known he wouldn’t betray you.”

Harry stood frozen, the foundations of everything he had been told about his past crumbling around him. A godfather. A man who was supposed to protect him, currently being hunted by Dementors for a crime he didn’t commit.

”We must be certain,” Dumbledore said, his voice cutting through the emotional heavy atmosphere. He raised the Elder Wand. The heavy iron cage rattled and lifted off the desk, hovering in the air.

”We must confirm Peter’s identity,” Dumbledore announced, his blue eyes hard as flint. ”And perhaps get answers to several of our questions from him directly, before we call in Amelia Bones and the DMLE. We cannot afford any political maneuvering once the Ministry is involved.”

Dumbledore gave his wand a sharp, complex flick.

A burst of brilliant, blinding silver-white light erupted from the tip. A magnificent, spectral Phoenix took form, soaring across the room and diving straight through the closed window, vanishing into the night.

”I have called Severus,” Dumbledore explained to Lupin. ”We may require his expertise with Veritaserum for this interrogation.”

Dumbledore turned back to the hovering cage. ”Students, step back, please.”

Harry, Ron, Percy, and Hermione scrambled backward, pressing themselves against the bookcases. Orion remained where he was, leaning casually against a pillar, watching the spectacle with clinical interest.

Lupin and McGonagall moved to flank Dumbledore, their wands drawn and leveled at the cage.

Dumbledore waved his wand, unlocking the iron latch. He flicked his wrist, and the cage plummeted to the floor with a loud clang.

But the rat didn’t fall. It remained suspended in mid-air, held aloft by Dumbledore’s invisible magic.

Dumbledore aimed his wand directly at the struggling rodent. A jet of bright blue-white light shot from the Elder Wand, striking the rat squarely in the chest.

It was like watching a horrific, high-speed evolutionary chart in reverse.

The rat elongated. Limbs stretched and cracked. Fur melted into pale, grubby skin. The squeaking morphed into a high-pitched, terrified human shriek.

”Bloody hell!” Ron yelled again, covering his eyes.

Peter Pettigrew hit the floor of the Headmaster’s office with a heavy, uncoordinated thud. He was a short, balding man with watery eyes and a pointed nose that still resembled the rodent he had been seconds before. He wore grimy, ill-fitting clothes that looked as though they hadn’t been washed in a decade.

He groveled immediately. He scrambled onto his hands and knees, looking wildly around the room, his eyes darting past the furious McGonagall and the impassive Dumbledore, finally locking onto the scarred face of the Defense Professor.

”Remus!” Pettigrew squeaked, his voice cracking with desperate, manufactured tears. He crawled forward, reaching out a trembling, four-fingered hand. ”Remus, my old friend! You... you have to believe me! I didn’t want to betray them! The Dark Lord... he forced me! He would have killed me!”

A low, guttural sound rumbled in Lupin’s chest. It wasn’t the sound of a wizard. It was the primal, terrifying growl of a wolf preparing to strike.
