The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

Chen Beiguo wasn’t very sophisticated; he didn’t know much about life’s finer things.

In this era, just getting enough to eat was hard. Even with a pot of wild vegetable congee, you couldn’t eat your fill. Who had the leisure to ponder its flavor?

Anyway, to him, the food Gu Zhiqing made was simply delicious—the best he’d ever had. He started shoveling food into his mouth even faster.

Leng Yuan was also enjoying his meal.

In the second branch of the Leng Family, Sun Yeshu wasn’t working because she was pregnant.

She hadn’t worked much back at the Sun family’s home, either. Having married into the large Leng Family and gotten pregnant so soon after, her mother-in-law was pleased and excused her from work. Her only responsibility was cooking lunch.

The Leng Family house had been built by Leng Yuan’s father. It was located near the western entrance of the village, with neighbors on both sides and across from them.

Their home didn’t have a wattle fence but walls built from stone and mud, which looked more impressive.

When it was time to make lunch, Sun Yeshu went to the backyard to pick some vegetables.

In those days, everyone ate vegetables they grew themselves; no one went out to buy them.

When Sun Yeshu reached their private plot, she saw two neighboring aunties huddled together, chatting.

She pursed her lips. ’These old women just gossip about everyone’s business all day long. They even have to chat for a bit while making lunch. They must have too much time on their hands.’

She picked two green onions and pulled up two eggplants. Today for lunch, she would stir-fry the eggplant and make some dough drop soup.

This dough drop soup wasn’t made with pure white flour, but a mix of cornmeal and white flour. Even so, it was considered a rare delicacy in the countryside.

If it weren’t for the fact that so many people in the family earned work points, they wouldn’t be able to eat this well.

Just as she was thinking about how delicious the dough drop soup would be, she heard the two aunties whispering.

”How is Leng Yuan so capable? He actually knows a big leader from the county. That’s incredible. I tell you, Leng Yuan’s future is definitely set.”

”How did his life get so good? Forget the big leader—his uncle is a capable man too. Leng Yuan is capable himself, so if his uncle gives him a hand in the future, things will be completely different for him.”

The other aunty listened with envy.

”Isn’t that the truth? I’m regretting it so much now. If I’d known, I would’ve married my daughter to Leng Yuan.”

She had a daughter who was two years younger than Leng Yuan and quite pretty. If she had known Leng Yuan would be doing so well now, that he knew such an important person and had a capable uncle, she would have done anything to marry her daughter to him.

The other aunty, who didn’t have a daughter, heard this and retorted bluntly.

”Oh, give me a break! Your daughter, compared to Gu Zhiqing? No offense, but have you ever seen anyone that beautiful in all the surrounding villages? Leng Yuan has high standards!”

”If you ask me, neither of them is an ordinary person.”

These words made the aunty sigh, lamenting that her daughter wasn’t good enough—too plain-looking to have caught Leng Yuan’s eye.

Meanwhile, Sun Yeshu, who had been listening from the side, overheard their entire conversation. She stopped picking vegetables and instead went over to ask them about it.

”What big leader? How do you know Leng Yuan knows a big leader?”

’Something must have happened today that I don’t know about!’

Hearing this, the two aunties were a little reluctant to talk to Sun Yeshu.

Although they were neighbors with the Leng Family, they weren’t on good terms. The Leng Family was stuck-up and looked down on those who were less well-off, often making snide remarks.

But there was no harm in talking about today’s events.

”You see, Leng Yuan led the young men of the village to rescue a kidnapped child, and a big leader from above came personally to present a commemorative banner. Not only did they give Leng Yuan a banner, but they also rewarded him with a thousand yuan. And that’s not all—everyone in the village who participated got ten yuan and an enamel mug.”

”Later, the brigade leader was showing the big leader around, and he was seen chatting and laughing with Leng Yuan. That’s when we found out they knew each other and were on pretty good terms. The big leader even went to Leng Yuan’s house for lunch.”
