The Delicate Darling with Her Rough Man

PFFT! One of the other youths, who was taking a sip of water, heard Li Hongmei say that fighting was wrong and immediately spat it all out.

”I’m telling you, Li Hongmei, if you’re scared, just say you’re scared. ’Fighting is wrong’? You’re pathetic.”

Li Hongmei was unpopular at the sent-down youth quarters, and no one really liked her.

That was why when Chen Ruoyu had challenged her to a fight earlier, not a single person had stepped in to mediate.

They knew Li Hongmei was no match for Chen Ruoyu.

For one thing, Li Hongmei was short, while Chen Ruoyu was a full head taller. If Chen Ruoyu grabbed her by the neck, Li Hongmei wouldn’t even be able to reach her.

Li Hongmei was furious, but she was helpless against them.

She glared coldly at the other youths in the dormitory. ”I know why you’re all acting like this. You’re just trying to suck up to Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao, hoping they’ll give you the spots for the pig farming training. Well, I’m telling you, that’s never going to happen.”

The expressions on everyone’s faces changed.

They all stood up in unison.

The sight of seven or eight people rising to their feet at once was incredibly intimidating.

Li Hongmei was scared to death, but she couldn’t afford to back down. She forced herself to shout at the top of her lungs.

”Am I wrong? Even the villagers have said it! We sent-down youth could be recalled to the city at any moment. If we get the training spots and then leave, who’s going to take care of the village’s pigs then?”

This was exactly why the villagers hadn’t considered the sent-down youth for the pig farming positions in the first place.

What would the village do after they’d learned the skills and then just left?

The other youths pressed their lips together, saying nothing.

If a chance to return to the city arose, none of them would pass it up. They weren’t noble enough to sacrifice their futures and stay in the village for the rest of their lives.

’When they first arrived in the countryside, they couldn’t even tell wheat shoots from weeds. They were never supposed to live such a hard, exhausting life.’

Seeing that no one was talking back, Li Hongmei grew bolder and turned her attention back to Chen Ruoyu.

”Sucking up to Gu Jiaojiao won’t do you any good, Chen Ruoyu. She doesn’t have the final say on who gets the pig farming spots.”

Li Hongmei knew she had no chance of getting one of the spots.

She had already offended Gu Jiaojiao beyond repair.

So she adopted an ”if I can’t have it, no one can” attitude.

Chen Ruoyu rolled her eyes, refusing to argue with an idiot.

Getting no reaction, Li Hongmei found it boring. Then she thought about how badly Hu Ziqiang had been treating her lately, and how he was often talking to the other village girls. This just made her even more irritated.

The next day, when the other youths were just getting out of bed, they saw that Chen Ruoyu was already up and ready to go. Everyone was a little confused.

”Ruoyu, why are you up so early today?”

Someone asked, stifling a yawn.

With farm work every day, they never got enough sleep.

Everyone was still bleary-eyed.

Chen Ruoyu had been too excited to sleep. She’d been awake since four, and only forced herself to wait until five to get up because she was afraid of disturbing the others.

Gu Jiaojiao had told her yesterday that if she wanted to become a teacher, she should go with her to the commune today.

Chen Ruoyu was so excited she had barely slept all night, half-afraid it was all a dream.

Now that someone had asked, she immediately replied, ”I have something to do today. Could you guys ask the Team Leader for a day off for me?”

Chen Ruoyu didn’t say what it was.

She wasn’t sure if she would actually succeed in becoming a teacher. Gu Jiaojiao hadn’t given her the specifics, only that if she was willing, she should meet her on the hillside.

’If I announce it now and don’t end up getting the job, it’ll be too embarrassing.’

Chen Ruoyu quickly ate her breakfast, grabbed her things, and left.

The others at the youth quarters watched her go, puzzled. One of the male youths asked around, but when he found out no one knew where she was going, he just dropped it.
