Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 171: 171 looking for

The room was warm, the sky was dark, and I planned to prepare something nice for dinner, so wontons it was.

Pork and green onion ones, each looking like a tiny treasure, truly appetizing.

Wei Kaiyun returned home, surprised to see his wife making such a rare treat in the evening.

After dinner, the two chatted off and on.

”Today I ran into Kong Mengjie’s second brother. Honestly, he’s annoying. He has some serious issues.”

”What happened?”

”He’s just a kid but already knows how to pester girls. Wang Ailing and I saw him and avoided him, yet he still had the nerve to come to our place looking for us. It’s just pathetic.”

”Oh? Isn’t her second brother in the army?”

”How do you know?”

”I’ve looked into it. He came back today?”

”Yeah, I saw him carrying luggage. Could it be he’s been sent back?”

”Perhaps he was discharged. Or maybe he’s just visiting family.”

It was December 26th. Wei Kaiyun stayed home, snuggling with Jiang Xinyu.

”Wifey, can you pack some bread for me when I leave?”

”Sure, it’s cold now. I can make you some with red bean paste.”

”No need, I don’t like red bean filling.”

”Alright, you’re leaving on the fifth. I’ll make them on the third; too long and they don’t taste good.”

By noon, the bread was ready, along with steamed rice and braised pork.

While the bread was still warm, she knocked on the west neighbor’s door.

Yu Xiaoyan opened the door, ”Director Jiang.”

”Sister-in-law Zhang, here’s some freshly baked bread. Give it a try with your kids.” She had learned of her work?

”Oh, this is too generous, Director Jiang.”

Jiang Xinyu just smiled; she disliked those who took advantage of others. But since they were neighbors, she didn’t want to stir up trouble.

”Sister-in-law Zhang, you carry on. I’m off to the eastern neighbor’s now to share some there too.”

”Thanks a lot, Director Jiang. I’ll steam some bean buns tomorrow and bring them over for you to try.”

”No need, thanks, Sister-in-law Zhang. My stomach isn’t great; I don’t eat sticky food. I appreciate the gesture nonetheless.”

After finishing her words, she went back into the yard, took some bread, and knocked on the eastern neighbor’s door.

”Sister-in-law Cheng, here are some bread. Have your kids give it a try.”

”Haha, it smells wonderful,” she said, tearing off a piece to eat, nodding vigorously, ”So tasty, Xiao Jiang. Can you spare me a few more?”

”I only baked six. Here’s the deal: I won’t overcharge you, five yuan a piece. How many do you want?”

”Really, haha, you’re charging for them?”

”Seriously, I bought these ingredients with my money. Why wouldn’t I charge? Do you think you have that much face?”

”How can a young girl say such things?”

”What, am I not speaking the truth? If you don’t want to buy them, I’ll just go back home.”

Yang Yue Mei was a bit embarrassed and annoyed. Living next door, she was surprised by the lack of courtesy.

Seeing that she didn’t respond, Jiang Xinyu turned and left.

People eat grains; every type of person exists.

”What’s wrong? Got angry?”

”Yeah, a bit. I hate people who exploit, whether exploiting me or me exploiting others, I just can’t stand it.”

”Alright, there’s no need for more interactions, just greetings when meeting, at most. Why don’t we buy up the houses on both sides?”

”No need, why buy so many houses?”

”We’ve already eaten, so don’t stay upset. It’s not worth it.”

In the afternoon, Wei Kaiyun went out while Jiang Xinyu stayed home reading. These things still left an impression; she was confident that with more careful reading and practice, getting familiar with the exam formats, she’d pass the exam.

At four in the afternoon, Wei Kaiyun returned. ”Honey, I just returned from the textile factory. I heard a man came looking for Wang Ailing. It might be Kong Mengjie’s second brother.”

Jiang Xinyu immediately got up and put on her shoes, ”No way, I have to go check it out.”

”What use will it be for you to go?”

”I just need to go see. You stay here and tend the fire.”

”Alright, I’ll come find you in a bit. Be careful.”

”Don’t worry, what trouble could happen at the textile factory gate?”

Jiang Xinyu packed three breads before riding her bike out.

When she arrived at the gate, she saw Kong Demin standing there. She said nothing, trying to enter the factory gate.

She was bundled warmly, so Kong Demin didn’t recognize her at first.

”Director Jiang? You’re here?”

”Yeah, Xiao Liu, I’m heading in first.”

”Alright. By the way, that person said he’s looking for Wang Ailing.”

”Mm, I’m looking for Wang Ailing too.”

Listening to their conversation, Kong Demin perked up. ”Jiang Xinyu?”

”Oh? It’s Kong Demin? Have you been to Kong Mengjie’s place?”

”Yeah, I’m here to find you.”

”Oh? Looking for me? Didn’t the gatekeeper say you’re here for Wang Ailing?”

”He mentioned you weren’t at work, so I decided to find Wang Ailing instead.”

”Oh, what do you need from me?”

”Saying it out here?”

”Yes, I don’t converse with unfamiliar men unless I know they’re from the village, otherwise I wouldn’t bother. If you have things to say, do it here, or else I’m heading inside.”

Kong Demin raised his brows; sounded like Wang Ailing had informed her, making things tougher.

”Alright, I’ve been discharged. My job assignment hasn’t been arranged yet, so I was thinking of joining the textile factory and came here to ask you.”

”I really don’t know about that. Isn’t a job supposed to be assigned from above? Just wait with patience, won’t you? Perhaps they’ll allocate you a position at the textile factory. Your self-run action seems pointless.”

”I can also secure a job and apply from above,” Kong Demin said, restraining his anger patiently.

”Oh, I didn’t know. For job hunting, you should ask the factory director, or seek help from Director Huang. I’m merely a small office director without authority.”

Jiang Xinyu, the type to speak her mind especially towards people she disliked, left absolutely no room for sentiment.

”Director Jiang?”

”Mr. Qian.”

”What’s up? Why are you standing at the gate?”

”Oh, ran into something annoying. I won’t say, I’m heading in.”

”Jiang Xinyu.” Kong Demin overheard their conversation; hearing her blatantly express dislike for him absolutely infuriated him.

”Oh, by the way, this is Mr. Qian from our textile factory. Speak to him if you want to work here. I can’t make it happen.”

Qian Jun grabbed Jiang Xinyu’s hand, ”Wait for a moment, let’s go in together. I smell the bread.”

Jiang Xinyu shook him off, Qian Jun released his grip. As she turned to leave, Kong Demin called out.

”Mr. Qian, right? I’m Kong Demin from X Division X Company X Platoon, now discharged. I want to join our textile factory.”

Qian Jun turned around, smiling. ”Hello, Mr. Kong, our textile factory doesn’t lack workers, but if there’s an arrangement from above, we won’t reject it. So Mr. Kong, please wait for the notice.”
