Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 156: 156 passed

”Director Ding, you need to help me. I’ll go to the cellar, and you pull from above.”

”Alright, no problem. Can you go down to the cellar?”

”Don’t worry, it’s fine.”

Altogether, three bags of wheat were brought up, plus a large piece of meat, weighing no less than fifty pounds.

”Haha, these are really good things. Timing isn’t convenient, but once it’s good, girl, come find me.” Ding Shihong said, handing the money he had prepared to Jiang Xinyu.

”Director Ding, be careful. I won’t keep you for a drink.”

She closed the door, and Wei Kaiyun came out, ”Wife, I feel like I’m the one you hide in your luxurious home.” Wei Kaiyun said with grievance.

”Haha. You really know how to imagine, hiding beauty in a golden house? It’s funny you think so; you don’t meet the beauty standard.” Jiang Xinyu playfully said.

Early the next morning, Wei Kaiyun pushed out a bag of wheat, returned after an hour. They had yam and red date porridge for breakfast. After eating, they went to the junior high school.

Jia Chongxin was already waiting. Seeing Jiang Xinyu behind Wei Kaiyun, he marveled at the drastic change.

”Hello, Director Jia.”

”Hmm, not bad, you’ve grown up, changed a lot.”

”Yes, grown up, more sensible.”

”Good, good, here’s a test paper. Give it a try. If you pass, I’ll do whatever it takes for you.”

Jiang Xinyu sat down, looked at the papers: Math, Chinese, Politics, Natural Studies.

She picked up the math paper, leaned on the desk, and answered carefully. Wei Kaiyun sat quietly beside, reading the newspaper.

After finishing math, it was Chinese. Jia Chongxin marked the math.

Only Natural Sciences and Politics felt uncertain.

After completing all four papers, another ten minutes passed, and the results were out.

”Seems like you haven’t neglected your studies, well done. Let’s go to the city now.”

Wei Kaiyun also came over to look at the papers, ”Director Jia, isn’t it too late to go now? It’s already ten o’clock.”

”It’s not late, we can take a bus back at one in the afternoon.”

Since they were so enthusiastic to help, the two of them naturally had no objections.

Throughout the journey, Jiang Xinyu quietly sat on one side, listening to the two chatting in front.

Upon reaching the high school, they directly found the principal. Jia Chongxin explained their intention straightforwardly.

”Principal Wang, here’s the test papers that Jiang Xinyu answered this morning. You see, such a progressive young person, I can’t bear for her to be undeveloped. She’s been graduated for over two years but has never put down her textbooks or given up on studies.

So could you offer her a chance? She wants to give up her job to learn at school, but her leaders think she’s talented and are reluctant to let go. I ponder it’s possible for the school to keep her registration, let her study at home, and come for exams.”

Wang Lanting reviewed the four papers, her handwriting alone scored thirty points and the answers were nearly perfect, especially the essay which was outstanding, worthy of someone who had been a secretary.

”Tuition and book fees still need to be paid.”

”No problem, thank you Principal Wang for giving me a chance. I’ll definitely study hard and not waste this opportunity you’ve offered.”

”Alright, but you’re already a semester behind, so you should start next September.”

”Principal Wang, can I try the exams? If I can pass, can I join the graduating class of 1960?”

”There’s the end-of-semester exam the day after tomorrow. If you’re willing to come, try it. If you can pass, you can join the 1960 class.”

”Thank you, Principal Wang. I’ll come for the exams the day after tomorrow.”

Wang Lanting issued a note, handing it to Jiang Xinyu. ”You go to the archive room to register, then to the office to pay fees and collect books. It’s for the current semester’s textbooks.”

”Thank you, Principal Wang.”

Jiang Xinyu went to handle the paperwork, the three of them chatted in the office.

The procedure was very fast. Once the registration was completed, she went to the office, paid the tuition fees of three yuan and six yuan, and got five books.

Now Jiang Xinyu was a high school student, returning with the five books.

Jia Chongxin and Wang Lanting greeted each other, the three left the school.

”Director Jia, Xiao Jiang, let me treat you to a meal. The bus will arrive after we eat.”

Jia Chongxin didn’t hold back, had three-in-one noodle buns, cabbage, and vermicelli.

At 2:20 in the afternoon, the two got home. Jiang Xinyu brought up another bag of wheat; tomorrow Wei Kaiyun would deliver it to Director Jia and Principal Wang.

Wei Kaiyun had already started the stove. ”Wife, do you want to go to dinner tonight?”

Jiang Xinyu shook her head, ”I won’t go; I’m not familiar with County Magistrate Tao.”

Wei Kaiyun didn’t insist. Ten pounds of meat packed in a sack, he went out.

Jiang Xinyu sat on the kang, flipping through the textbooks she received today. Math and Chinese were manageable, political studies were okay, history could probably pass, but geography required cramming for tomorrow.

Wei Kaiyun found He Cheng, left the wheat again, and the two talked for a long time. It was 4:30 before he left.

Yesterday’s agreement to meet Tao Juncheng at the restaurant, Wei Kaiyun went directly there.

”Old Ding, make it a hearty meal tonight; there’s a friend.”

”Sure, I got some good stuff yesterday.”

Tao Juncheng and Cao Zixuan were the only ones who came.

”It’s really good stuff, you’ve outdone yourself, Xiao Wei.”

”County Magistrate Tao, what’s there to be polite about? We’ve been together for years. Thank you for taking care of me before.

Also, some wine, County Magistrate Tao, shall we share a drink?”

”Xiao Wei, I’ve stopped drinking; my health doesn’t permit it.”

Until eight o’clock, Wei Kaiyun returned. Jiang Xinyu hadn’t put down her book, reading quickly over a hundred pages but hadn’t completed it yet.

”Wife, continue tomorrow, or your eyes might be harmed.”

”I’ll go through history, geography, and politics tomorrow, passing would be great.”

”Don’t push yourself, it’s just a year gap.”

The next morning, Wei Kaiyun got up to cook porridge. After breakfast, he didn’t disturb Jiang Xinyu at home, took two pieces of three-pound pork, went to fetch the flour, and split it into two portions.

”Director Jia, thank you, here’s a small token.”

Jia Chongxin glanced, ”I’ll accept this, thank you for being thoughtful, Xiao Wei.” Gifting such thoughtful items in December was most considerate.

”Also, come with me to the city now, deliver this to Principal Wang too, aim to get the results by tomorrow; confirm if Xiao Jiang can smoothly join the 1960 class.”

”That would be wonderful; thank you Director Jia for making another trip.”

The gifting went smoothly; if it were anything else, Jia Chongxin and Wang Lanting probably wouldn’t accept, but this gift was perfectly fitting and could not be refused.

When Wei Kaiyun returned, he found his wife had finished reviewing all three subjects.

”Wife, how confident are you?”

”Should be able to pass all.”

”That’s really good; my wife is a university student in the making.”
