Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 164: 164 Female Protagonist Gets Married

”Thank you, Director Wei.”

”It’s Director Huang’s big day, just a small gesture.”

The two exchanged a few more words before parting ways. Wei Kaiyun bought five pounds of millet, and surprisingly there were also soybeans and peanuts, so he bought five pounds of each as well.

There was finally a hint of a smile on his perpetually unchanged face. He then turned to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy five pounds of eggs and a few heads of garlic.

”Smells so good, wife, are you making steak?”

”Yes, it’s almost ready.”

”Even without a knife and fork, the taste is just like what I’ve had before. My wife’s hands are so skillful.”

”Right? I think so too.”

”By the way, I just ran into Huang Hongwei at the grain station. He was buying grain and also invited me to the wedding. I gave him a bicycle ticket and five yuan.”

”Hehe, that’s quite a gift. Tomorrow, I think I’ll only give one yuan.”

Huang Hongwei bought grain and went home, thinking that there were no vegetables at home, so he went to the supply and marketing cooperative again to buy green onions, cabbage, radishes, and a pound of eggs to nourish his wife.

In the evening, he made dough drop soup and poached two eggs for his wife.

Kong Mengjie picked one up and put it in Huang Hongwei’s bowl, ”You eat too.”

He was flattered, hurriedly putting it back, ”Wife, you eat, you need to replenish.”

Kong Mengjie was quite conflicted at this moment. Huang Hongwei was indeed good to her, so she decided to settle down and live a good life. A man being so good to her was satisfying enough.

But she couldn’t help thinking, was he like this to his ex-wife? If so, it means he’s too affectionate. If not, she’ll need to be on guard when the novelty wears off; she might end up like that too.

After dinner, Kong Mengjie lit the kerosene lamp and candles to continue working. She had already made two quilts.

”Wife, don’t overwork yourself.”

”It’s fine. Tonight, I plan to stay up all night if necessary to get these done.”

Wanting to cuddle with his wife while sleeping was impossible for Huang Hongwei, so he hurried outside to fire up the couch bed, fearing his wife might be cold.

It wasn’t until the latter half of the night that the two quilts were finally done.

”Wife, quickly lie down and sleep.”

Kong Mengjie obediently lay in bed. She refused Huang Hongwei, saying, ”We have work tomorrow, need to get our marriage certificate; there are a lot of things to do.”

She knew that if she went back now, everyone would say whatever they wanted anyway.

Early the next morning, Huang Hongwei still made dough drop soup with poached eggs for his wife. Then the two went to work, and all the textile factory workers they ran into wanted to look at them. The man didn’t feel any discomfort, but Kong Mengjie felt like she was stripped naked and standing in front of everyone, feeling extremely embarrassed.

At noon, the two quickly ate lunch and rode their bikes to the county civil affairs bureau.

For them, getting married was more complicated than for unmarried couples.

But after half an hour, the two were holding their marriage certificates. ”Wife, when we have time, let’s take a photo and hang it in our room.”

”Let’s talk about it after the New Year. Let’s hurry back, or we’ll be late for work.”

Jiang Xinyu and her partner had vegetable buns filled with cabbage and cooked meat for lunch, which was especially fragrant.

”Wife, once these ingredients are in your hands, they become particularly delicious.”

”Hehe, I noticed you ate six big vegetable buns.”

”Hehe, I couldn’t help myself and indeed ate too much.

I’m going out for a bit; you can stay home and read.”

”After they get off work, I’ll go find Wang Ailing.”

”Okay, I’ll go myself. Could you give me a key? I’ll just pop in and be right back.”

”Sure.”

In the afternoon, Jiang Xinyu was on her own, took a hot bath, and over the past ten-plus days, she really had gained some weight, and certain areas were even more pronounced. Growing to a C is surely not a problem. Her height also increased by a centimeter, which is a good sign.

At five in the afternoon, she didn’t ride her bicycle; wearing a coat, a hat, and a scarf, she walked to the factory.

Wang Ailing had already gotten off work, taken a bath, and was just waiting for Jiang Xinyu to come over.

”Xinyu, how much should we give as a gift?”

”I’ll go with whatever you decide.”

”I found out that in Kong Mengjie’s workshop, the usual gift is fifty cents. Since we’re from the same village, would one yuan be okay?”

”Sure, no objection from me. I’ll go with your decision.”

The two left the factory gate and saw people already coming and going across the street.

They saw the double happiness character posted on the gate and couplets, which had a feeling of the times.

When they went inside, they saw Kong Mengjie sitting on the kang, smiling. They both smiled back and each took out a yuan to hand over.

”I’m not accepting cash gifts. You two take it back.”

”How can that work? It’s your big day, please don’t refuse,” Jiang Xinyu said with a smile.

”We have wedding candies here; try some.”

Each of them took a piece and put it in their mouths. Jiang Xinyu felt a bit queasy, as everyone did the same and took them directly.

A portrait of the Chairman was hung on the wall, and it seemed that the couple would swear an oath in front of it soon.

The room was crowded, so the two went outside, knowing everyone wanted to cram inside.

”Didn’t expect both directors to come; maybe there will be fewer rumors in the future?”

”Hope so.”

After a while, Wei Kaiyun came out, greeted everyone, and left.

By seven in the evening, several candles were lit inside, making the room much brighter. The couple stood respectfully in front of the portrait to bow and swear an oath.

Finally, the ceremony was complete. Everyone applauded and offered their congratulations.

No one lingered too long. ”Xinyu, let me see you off.”

”No need, you go rest. You’ve yawned several times already, go rest, I can manage on my own.”

”Director Jiang, I’ll give you a ride.”

”No need to trouble Mr. Qian.”

”No need to be polite with me. I won’t be at ease if you go alone; better if I take you back.”

”Really, there’s no need,” Jiang Xinyu repeatedly waved her hands, but Qian Jun ignored her. ”I’ll go get the car, wait for me at the door.”

”Xinyu, just let Mr. Qian take you, it’s safer. Just a few days ago, thieves were spotted.”
