Demon King: Hero, don’t run away!

With his hand on his chin, pondering for a while, Yang Yu posed his first question:

”There is something that has always been on my mind.

This thing called Racial Essence is not just used to enhance power, is it?

I want to know the true purpose of Racial Essence.”

”You really picked quite an extraordinary question to start with.”

Owen raised his hand, and a bubble appeared not far from him,

”I remember I said some peculiar things to you before.

Was it at that time that sparked your interest?”

Yang Yu shook his head, ”The first time I used Racial Essence, I had a strange feeling, but it quickly disappeared. Since then, I have always been curious.”

Owen smiled, motioning Yang Yu to follow and stepped towards the bubble.

Reaching the bubble, Owen gently prodded it with his finger, causing the entire bubble to shatter like a phantom.

In an instant, the pure white space transformed into a bustling town full of people.

No one paid any attention to the appearance of Yang Yu and Owen, each busy with their own matters.

Yang Yu reached out to touch a railing, but his hand passed right through it.

Currently, everything Yang Yu saw was an illusion, yet it was all events that had truly happened in history.

Without any warning, a sturdy man on the street suddenly embraced his arms in pain, half kneeling on the ground. The walking crowd dodged him, with only a few kind people stepping forward to inquire about his condition.

Suddenly, the right side of the stout man’s body began to sprout wolf-like fur, and his form grew larger, turning into a half-human, half-wolf creature.

His eyes were blood red, and his sharp claws tore apart the kind people who approached him, madly slaughtering everyone around him.

Owen said, ”This man, an hour ago, had stolen and used Racial Essence from the Wind Wolf Clan.

He underwent a mutation, but he was unable to control it, ultimately going mad and causing a tragedy.

And such tragedies have not occurred just once.”

Owen snapped his fingers repeatedly, and the scene around Yang Yu kept changing constantly. Yang Yu saw one bizarrely shaped person after another.

Parts of their bodies seemed to have been corrupted by some Sub-human Species, transforming into the form of those Sub-humans.

”If it’s an offspring born from the union of two races, they would typically inherit parts of the characteristics from both parents well.

These people, all underwent mutations caused by using Racial Essence, with their forms being irregular and abrupt.

You may have noticed, the mutated parts appear more pure and authentic than a hybrid.

Take the first mutant for example, before adventurers found him, his werewolf parts were able to form three Wind Vortexes.

This is a level that ordinary hybrids of the Wind Wolf Clan would take years to achieve.

And he managed it in just a week.

That kind of ability, to him, was as if it were instinctual.”

”By this reasoning, Racial Essence can allow a transition from one Sub-human Race to another Sub-human Race?” Yang Yu asked.

”Exactly so. It looks like you have vaguely sensed it.”

”I just wanted to confirm again.

This transition comes with conditions, right?

Otherwise, merely obtaining Racial Essence to change one’s race wouldn’t result in the mutants you just showed me.”

Owen nodded, ”Without the support of certain devices, attempting a safe and complete transition is nearly impossible, but it’s not entirely out of the question.”

”...The closer one is to a true Pure Human, the more Racial Essence it requires to safely complete the transition, transforming into another Subhuman?” Yang Yu pressed on.

”When I first met you, on a whim, I really divulged quite a bit.

To deduce based on those, you’re not simple either.

Yes, that’s exactly it.

Your existence can be said to be a terrible miracle over tens of thousands of years.

Generally speaking, Pure Humans are not suitable to survive in such environments; they often catch a disease called ’Magic Deficiency’.

This disease, as the name implies, is due to the inability to absorb magic power from the external world to maintain balance within the body. As a result, the ambient magic erodes the body, causing a series of complications.

In less severe cases, the body becomes weak, and in severe cases, it results in death.

”

”Was Racial Essence specially designed for people like them?”

Owen shook his head, ”You could say that, but it’s not entirely so. It became like this later on.”

”Later on? What about before?”

Owen was in a dilemma, ”Don’t ask questions outside the list; this question requires additional payment.

Moreover, if you really wanted to ask, it would definitely cost you a huge amount of Victory Points.”

”...Oh, I see.” Yang Yu nodded understandingly, ”Then tell me something that doesn’t require extra payment.”

”I have access to the knowledge base, and some questions don’t require points.

This means I can freely access these no-point questions.”

Owen chuckled, ”Haha, your understanding isn’t wrong.

But, it seems like my workload is about to increase.

Since we’re on the topic of Magic Deficiency, I’ll talk a bit more.

Do you recall when I mentioned there are three types of creatures in this world?”

Yang Yu nodded.

Owen conjured up a bubble and gently popped it.

The space where Yang Yu and Owen were turned into a vast grassland.

In the tall grass, there was a cheetah on a hunt, targeting an antelope drinking by the river.

Suddenly, a massive serpentine magic beast emerged from the ground, scaring away all the drinking antelopes, and launched an attack into the lake.

An alligator-shaped magic beast, hidden in the river, revealed itself, immediately adopting a defensive posture, and counterattacked with Skills. Before long, the two magic beasts were locked in a fierce struggle.

The cheetah hiding in the grass let out a disgruntled meow, watching the fight from a distance.

Owen pointed to the sky, and time seemed to freeze, the entire scene paused at that moment.

Walking closer to the cheetah, Owen looked at Yang Yu and said:

”Ordinary creatures and magic beasts can be easily distinguished.

Ordinary creatures have absolute biological instincts, following the survival of the fittest and the law of the jungle.

But magic beasts are different; while they follow biological laws to some extent, they do not fully adhere to them.

For instance, the two magic beasts in the scene have roughly equal strength.

If both of them fight, they might end up injuring each other severely.

If they followed biological instincts, they would choose easier prey, such as the antelope drinking by the river or the cheetah hiding in the grass.

Those prey would suffice to fill their stomachs.

These prey won’t hurt them and won’t easily escape their grasp.

The real hunters of the wild won’t take on prey stronger than themselves unless absolutely necessary.

They don’t want to die miserably for a meal by being gutted by their prey.

As long as they can eat their fill, predators tend to move on.

In the arena, unleashing beasts that had been starved for several days to create a sense of inevitable confrontation is just for amusement.

The question remains.

Why do you think...

they choose to fight each other?”
