The Unveiling of Secret Queen

Chapter 1143: Chapter 1143: Does Amadeus Really Have a Girlfriend from McKinney?

”I’m fine.” Amadeus Yancey lifted his eyelids, his eyes clear and composed, looking like nothing was amiss. ”Uncle Wafford, don’t worry about me. You go ahead and tend to your business.”

”Alright.” Jackson Wafford, who privately had a friendship with Mr. Yancey despite the age gap, was a full generation older. Amadeus calling him ”Uncle Wafford” was not just courtesy. After agreeing, he still asked him: ”Do you want me to have a waiter bring a bowl of hangover soup over for you?”

Amadeus glanced at his phone absentmindedly. Nathalie Quinlan hadn’t sent him any messages. With his arm propped on the table and his fingers pressing against his high-bridged nose, he furrowed his brows slightly, seemingly deep in thought. The refusal he originally intended to give hovered on his lips. Instead, he picked up his phone, stood up, and said, ”No need, I’m going out for a walk to get some fresh air.”

”Then later...” Jackson Wafford wanted to ask if he would come back afterward.

Amadeus seemed to have guessed what he wanted to ask and responded lazily, ”Depends. I might come back, I might not.”

Jackson Wafford nodded, appearing to understand. He turned and spoke to the people beside him.

The people at this table were mostly from the Ministry of Culture. Amadeus seldom interacted with them in his usual life. This time, however, he gave plenty of face to the group, penalizing himself with a drink of liquor before politely stepping outside.

As soon as he left, the people in the private room seemed like they had a weight lifted off their shoulders.

Everyone’s expressions were visibly more relaxed compared to when he had been present.

It was clear that Amadeus merely sitting there, even though he acted courteously enough to leave them feeling flattered, his presence still exerted an invisible pressure on them.

A fat middle-aged man pulled out a handkerchief. Only after Amadeus left did he dare to wipe the sweat nervously pooling at his temples. He looked at Jackson Wafford and sighed quietly, ”Mr. Yancey was far too polite today. It had me tense the whole time. Tsinghua University truly is a century-old institution—even Mr. Yancey gives face to Mr. Wafford!”

Jackson Wafford very much wanted to say that Amadeus wasn’t giving him face—it was clearly for Nathalie Quinlan’s sake. But he refrained from mentioning such irrelevant matters, raised his wine glass, and chuckled warmly, his demeanor similar to the Buddha: ”Not at all, really. In education, we’re all equals. All equals. Come, I’ll raise a glass to everyone and thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend the university’s anniversary celebration.”

”You’re too kind, Mr. Wafford.”

”Indeed, the principal is too kind.”

”It’s only right, it’s only right.”

The people at the table echoed his sentiments, stood up, raised their glasses, clinked them together, and drank them dry in one go.

They then sat back down, every one of them seasoned individuals, fully understanding that Jackson’s toast was to divert the topic and smooth things over.

They weren’t fools.

Someone like Amadeus Yancey, with his status and background, was not the kind of person they could casually gossip about behind his back. Even the one who had initiated the topic quickly wised up and stopped talking.

The rest, clearly too prudent to err, didn’t continue to steer the conversation in that direction either.

Still, a growing curiosity brewed within their hearts.

Rumors in Beijing’s elite circles had been spreading—that Mr. Yancey had a new girlfriend, someone from McKinney.

Compared to Beijing.

McKinney was just an inconspicuous third-tier city, yet someone of Amadeus’s stature and position had chosen a girlfriend from the boondocks. Who wouldn’t be curious about this young lady?

Word outside had it that Mr. Yancey’s girlfriend was remarkably good academically and even gained admission to Tsinghua University. At first, most of them didn’t believe the rumor.

But now... most of them were seventy to eighty percent convinced!

After all, Mr. Yancey’s behavior today was truly unusual!

A girl from McKinney had actually managed to win over Mr. Yancey. This... left them wondering about her background. If it was solely for her looks, she might not measure up to the standards of the Yancey Family.
