Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

As Mrs. Sutton spoke, Anne looked up at Nathan Fawcett. A doctor was examining him. He sat there, coughing nonstop, looking like he could drop dead at any moment.

’At this rate, it won’t be long before I’m a widow!’

Anne said, ”I don’t think so. He seems alright.”

Truthfully, she didn’t care if she became a widow. She had no real feelings for Nathan Fawcett. After all, she wasn’t a masochist. Being with this man meant walking on eggshells every day, never knowing when he might fly into a rage.

But she knew her mother would be very concerned about it.

Her mother had always been a traditional, somewhat delicate woman who believed that a woman needed a man to rely on and couldn’t get by without one.

That’s why Anne had no choice but to hide her true feelings from her mother.

Mrs. Sutton said, ”I hope he can live a bit longer! By the way, don’t you know a lot of doctors? You should introduce him to some reliable ones.”

Anne said, ”I’ve already suggested that to him.”

Anne glanced at the man on the sofa, wondering if he’d spoken to his father about it yet.

...

Charles Prescott was still at the office when Henry Underwood came in, leading a woman behind him. ”President Shaw, this way, please.”

The woman was dressed in business attire and looked sharp and competent.

She walked in, glanced at Charles Prescott, and sat down.

Charles Prescott looked up at her. ”What brings you back?”

Mia Shaw stared at him. ”I heard you and Anne Sutton broke up. And she married your uncle?”

”...” Charles Prescott said, ”You’re certainly well-informed.”

Mia Shaw snorted. ”All I did was say a few bad things about her, and you broke up with me to defend her. Now... I guess you’re reaping what you sow!”

Charles Prescott looked down. ”What is it?”

Mia Shaw said, ”My current boss is very interested in your company’s autonomous vehicle technology. He sent me here to find out more.”

Charles Prescott glanced at her. ”Alright.”

”Why are you talking to me like that, with such an unhappy look on your face? I’m your guest, aren’t I?”

”It’s nothing.” Charles Prescott forced a perfunctory smile. ”Just a long day at work. I’m a little tired.”

”Bad mood?” Mia Shaw asked. ”I hear that if Nathan Fawcett has a child, the succession of the Fawcett Group will pass to that child. Is that what you’re worried about?”

Charles Prescott glanced at her, the corner of his mouth twitching into a smirk.

’This whole thing was really pissing him off!’

’What pissed him off even more was that the child would be Anne Sutton’s.’

Mia Shaw said, ”Charles, you know I’ve always admired you the most. You’re a capable man. Even if you left the Fawcett Group, you’d do well for yourself anywhere else. The Fawcett Group, on the other hand, probably couldn’t function without you, right? If they ever decide they don’t want you, come find me. I’ll guarantee you a brilliant future.”

”Look at you now, so successful.” Charles Prescott glanced at her. When he’d first met her, she was just a rookie who didn’t know much. He was the one who’d mentored her.

After they broke up, she left and found a new boss. He was a capable man who admired her talent, giving her the opportunities she needed to achieve her current status.

Mia Shaw said, ”No matter how successful I’ve become, I still care about you. Since you’re tired, let’s go somewhere and get dinner.”

After speaking, she stood up. Charles Prescott knew she wasn’t just representing herself anymore; she had her boss’s backing. Charles had always been one to look at the bigger picture. He never offended anyone who might be useful to him, so he walked out the door with her.

However, just as the two of them stepped out the door, Sylvia Warren walked up to them. ”Honey.”

She ran up to Charles Prescott and linked her arm through his. Her eyes flickered toward Mia Shaw; instinct told her that this woman had some kind of history with Charles.

But she didn’t dare make a scene.

She just said to Charles Prescott, ”What have you been so busy with? We haven’t seen each other in days. Let’s have dinner tonight.”

Charles Prescott was already losing his patience. ”What are you doing here?”

Sylvia Warren said, ”The baby misses you!”

”I’m with a guest, can’t you see?” Charles Prescott snapped. ”Henry, take her home!”

”No!” Sylvia Warren retorted. ”I just want to have dinner with you. I’m sure this beautiful lady won’t mind.”

Mia Shaw stood to the side, watching Sylvia Warren. She remembered a time when she had been just like her.

She’d been young then and thought herself so important, always wanting to be the only one in Charles Prescott’s eyes, wishing he would spend all his time with her.

Only later did she realize she was just an insignificant part of his life.

When she’d found out he canceled a date with her to meet Anne Sutton, she’d gotten upset and thrown a tantrum. In the end, he had broken up with her right then and there.

Now, seeing Sylvia Warren was like looking at a reflection of her own past foolishness.

’A woman who only wants to depend on a man will just be cast aside!’

Charles Prescott looked at Sylvia Warren. ”Do you know what happens to women who don’t know their place around me?”

His tone was perfectly calm, but it was utterly chilling.

Sylvia Warren looked at him, then glanced at Mia Shaw and shut her mouth.

Charles Prescott ignored her, getting into the elevator with Mia Shaw.

Inside the elevator, Mia Shaw asked, ”So she’s the one who made you break up with Ms. Sutton?”

Charles Prescott said, ”You’re being ridiculous.”

”I’m just making conversation,” Mia Shaw said. ”After all, everyone knows about the scene she caused at the hospital. I can’t tell if she’s lucky or unlucky.”

After all, Sylvia Warren was the only one of Charles Prescott’s women who had ever gotten pregnant.

If not for that, given how brainless she was, she likely never would have been able to break up Charles Prescott and Anne Sutton.

...

That night, Mrs. Sutton went into Sharon Sutton’s room and saw her still on her phone. ”We’re going to the Fawcett estate tomorrow for dinner with your sister. You should get to bed early so you’re not too tired to get up.”

”Can I not go?” Sharon Sutton asked her mother.

”Why not?” Mrs. Sutton asked.

”I just don’t like the atmosphere at the Fawcett home. I’m a little scared of my brother-in-law,” Sharon said. ”It doesn’t matter if I go anyway. Just tell them I’m sick.”

Mrs. Sutton glanced at her. She knew that ever since the incident with David Hayes, her daughter hadn’t been interested in anything.

Forcing her to go to the Fawcett estate would only make her miserable.

Mrs. Sutton relented. ”Alright, then. If you’re not going, just get some rest at home. But, Sharon, you’ve been resting an awful lot lately. Try not to fall behind in your classes.”

Sharon nodded. ”I’ll study at home.”

As Mrs. Sutton walked out, Sharon opened her phone. She had just been chatting with David Hayes. Hearing that her mother would be out tomorrow, David had texted, ”I’ll come over and see you tomorrow, then.”

”Okay,” Sharon replied. ”But you promised you wouldn’t hurt me anymore! If you break your word, I’ll never forgive you again.”

”Don’t worry, Sharon. I’ll never make you sad again.”
