Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Charles Prescott must have already heard the news.

However, he still put on a shocked expression. ”How could this be? That’s too fast... What kind of work are they even doing? Why don’t we find another doctor?”

Nathan Fawcett said, ”Is there any hospital with better facilities than First Hospital? I doubt it. It’s fine. I’ve already accepted my fate. Death is nothing to be afraid of.”

Charles Prescott’s gaze fell on Anne Sutton. ”Then you’ll have to try hard,” he said. ”To conceive my uncle’s child within these two months.”

She knew he wasn’t being sincere.

Still, Anne Sutton played along. ”Don’t worry!”

Charles Prescott watched Anne Sutton. It seemed that no matter what he said to her now, she remained completely unfazed. He realized he no longer held any place in her heart.

During all their years of engagement, he had considered himself a good fiancé to Anne Sutton.

So he had expected her to be at least a little heartbroken after they broke up.

But her current reaction only made Charles Prescott feel more and more that he might not have been that important to her after all.

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, ”Dinner is ready.”

With that, she walked over, helped Nathan Fawcett to his feet, and led him toward the dining room.

Charles Prescott didn’t follow them. He just left and went home.

When Charles Prescott got home, he found Sylvia Warren sitting on the sofa, wiping away tears.

She had been planning to move in with Charles Prescott, so she had already had all her things brought over.

But now that Charles Prescott was kicking her out, she had to take all her things with her again.

Charles Prescott walked in and sat down beside her. His attitude was no longer as cold as it had been in front of Nathan Fawcett. ”What are you crying about?”

Sylvia Warren said, ”I have to move out. Am I not allowed to be sad about it?”

’And he even said he wouldn’t marry me anymore!’

Charles Prescott said, ”Stop crying. Those were just things I said to appease my uncle, to calm him down. You didn’t actually take them seriously, did you?”

”So, darling, you do still love me, right?” Hope rekindled in Sylvia Warren’s eyes as she looked at Charles Prescott.

Charles Prescott said, ”Of course. You’re carrying our baby now. If I don’t love you, who else would I love?”

He then picked up a tissue and wiped her tears for her.

Although Sylvia Warren liked to stir up trouble with others, she was always docile in front of Charles Prescott, and he had a thing for obedient women. So, seeing her upset, he couldn’t help but coax her a little.

Sylvia Warren’s tears finally began to subside. ”Thank you, darling. I knew you still loved me. As long as I have a place in your heart, I can endure any grievance.”

’I just wish Nathan Fawcett would die already.’ She believed Charles Prescott felt the exact same way.

’After all, once Nathan Fawcett is gone, everything the Fawcett Family owns will belong to Charles.’

’Charles is probably looking forward to that day even more than I am.’

Charles Prescott looked at the maid. ”Is everything packed?”

The maid replied, ”Yes.”

Charles Prescott said, ”Take Miss Warren home and make sure she’s well taken care of.”

Sylvia Warren looked a little disappointed. ”You’re not taking me home?”

Charles Prescott said, ”I have an early meeting at the office tomorrow. I have too much on my plate, I’m swamped. Just rest up at home for a couple of days. You probably haven’t maxed out that card I gave you. Go shopping if you’re bored. You love shopping, don’t you?”

Hearing him tell her to go shopping, Sylvia Warren smiled. ”Thank you, darling. You’re the best.”

After seeing Sylvia Warren off, Charles Prescott sat alone on the sofa, gazing at the darkening sky outside. From his window, he could see the lights come on in the building opposite them. Anne Sutton was in there.

’She’s with Nathan Fawcett now. They’re husband and wife...’

’And what about me?’

’I have a woman by my side, a child on the way...’

Sylvia Warren had only just left, yet he already felt a pang of loneliness.

He picked up his phone and sent a message to Anne Sutton: ”Come out. I need to talk to you.”

...

Nathan Fawcett had already finished dinner and gone back to his room.

Anne Sutton was sitting alone in the living room, reviewing some files on her laptop, when she suddenly received a message. She glanced at it and was surprised to see it was from Charles Prescott. She had no idea what he could want.

She went out the door and downstairs, where she saw Charles Prescott sitting by himself on a bench near the flowerbeds.

The spot was in front of the Fawcett family’s main building, out of sight from Nathan Fawcett’s house.

Anne Sutton asked, ”Why did you ask me to come out here?”

Charles Prescott looked up and saw her standing there in slippers, the night breeze rustling the hem of her dress. He patted the spot next to him. ”Come, sit down.”

Anne Sutton didn’t sit beside him. There was another chair about two meters away, and she sat there instead. ”What do you want?”

Charles Prescott said, ”Have you thought about what I said before?”

”Why would you think I’d even consider it?” Anne Sutton found his question baffling. ”If I hadn’t been so busy the last couple of days, I’d have gone to a temple to burn some incense and pray for a healthy baby.”

Charles Prescott’s mouth twitched when he heard that. Seeing how she was determined to be defiant, he had no choice but to back down. ”What happened before was my fault,” he said, compromising. ”I shouldn’t have let Sylvia come and bother you. I already punished her for it today. Please don’t be angry with me anymore.”

’...’ ’He only punished her to appease Nathan Fawcett.’

’But the way he says it, it sounds like he did it all for me.’

Anne Sutton looked at Charles Prescott. ”You really have a way with words,” she said.

Charles Prescott said, ”Stop messing around and come back to me, okay? You’ve seen what my uncle is like. Stay with him, and what will you be but a maid, cooking his meals and running his errands? When you were with me, did I ever have the heart to make you do those things?”

”What are you trying to say?” Anne Sutton looked at him, confused. ”If you just came here to spout this nonsense, then I’m leaving.”

”Anne,” Charles Prescott said, trying to make her stay. ”I was wrong! I was too arrogant. I thought I didn’t love you, but I really do! Now, the thought of you being with Nathan Fawcett keeps me up at night. Do you understand?”

”Can’t sleep? You seem to be sleeping just fine! Weren’t you just asking me to deliver a baby for your precious Sylvia? Charles Prescott, do you even hear how hypocritical you sound right now?”

Charles Prescott said, ”I’m serious. Everything I did before was just to make you angry. Can we please stop fighting? And don’t have a child with my uncle. I know you have to be with him now, and he needs you to take care of him, there’s nothing to be done about that. But as soon as he’s gone, I’ll take you back. Okay?”

’He sounded so sincere when he apologized.’

Anne Sutton stared at the man before her. He had a gentle, disarmingly deceptive face that could almost make you believe he was telling the truth.

If she didn’t know what he was really like, she might have actually believed that Charles Prescott was deeply in love with her and was trying to win her back.

Seeing her staring at him, Charles Prescott asked, ”Okay?”

Anne Sutton said, ”Sure. There’s just one problem... I don’t trust you. Why don’t you write me a promise in writing? That way, you can’t go back on your word later, and I’ll have proof. If you write it down, I’ll promise not to have his child.”
