Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

”Afraid?” Charles Prescott sat down, repeating Anne’s words as he looked at her. ”What am I afraid of?”

”You’re afraid that I’ll really get together with Nathan Fawcett and have his child, and that your position as his heir will be at risk.”

Hearing this, Charles Prescott laughed. ”Your belly isn’t even showing yet, and you already dare to make threats to my face! Anne Sutton, you can’t beat me! One day, I’ll make you come crawling to me, begging for my forgiveness. You’ll tell me you were wrong, that you never should have married Nathan Fawcett. Just you wait.”

If any other woman had proposed leaving him, Charles Prescott wouldn’t have tried to stop her. He wouldn’t have even been angry; he would have given them a generous compensation package.

But so far, he had always been the one to initiate the breakups. No one else ever did.

But with Anne Sutton, it was different. He couldn’t stand the thought of her living a comfortable life after leaving him.

He was determined to see her life fall into miserable ruin after she left him, to make her realize that he was the only one she could ever rely on.

Anne Sutton said, ”That day will never come.”

”Nathan Fawcett is alone with Stella Shields right now. It won’t be long before you’re kicked out. They’ve known each other since they were children—childhood sweethearts. What do you think you are to him?”

”Since they’re childhood sweethearts, she’ll be the one to have Nathan Fawcett’s child! It looks like your plan is going to fall through. I don’t care whether I have Nathan’s child or not. As long as *you* can’t inherit the Fawcett family fortune, I’ll be happy.”

”You...” Charles Prescott’s face twitched as he stared at Anne Sutton.

He didn’t know what was wrong with himself. Initially, Charles Prescott had just wanted to find an easily controllable woman to take care of Nathan Fawcett—someone who would listen to him and, crucially, not bear Nathan a child.

Anne Sutton’s arrival had completely upended his plans.

But now...

’The very thought of Anne Sutton not being with Nathan Fawcett, not having his child, makes me incredibly happy.’

’Even when Anne said Stella Shields would have Nathan’s child, I didn’t feel that angry.’

’This is so strange!’

He had always kept women and his ambitions completely separate. But now... ’I feel like my thoughts have gone to a place I don’t even understand myself.’

With that thought, Charles Prescott stopped arguing with her and walked straight out.

Anne Sutton watched Charles Prescott leave. ’I can’t believe I managed to piss him off and make him leave with just a few words.’

’Huh, does that mean I won the argument?’

After Charles Prescott left, Anne Sutton glanced upstairs, curious about what was happening up there.

She walked up the stairs, pretending she was just passing by. She saw that Nathan Fawcett’s door was shut tight, with the butler standing guard outside. ’Stella Shields must be in there.’

The thought of him with another woman made her instantly uncomfortable. Her mind even conjured an image of them in bed together.

The butler saw Anne and said, ”Ms. Sutton.”

Anne said, ”Mr. Fawcett...”

”He and Ms. Shields have something to discuss. Please, feel free to attend to your own affairs.”

The butler didn’t know what Mr. Fawcett’s intentions were, but those were his orders, so he had no choice but to stand guard.

The butler’s words made Anne’s heart sink.

’It seems Nathan Fawcett has already made his choice.’

’Suddenly, I feel completely redundant.’

Anne Sutton said, ”I need to go home for a bit. Please let Mr. Fawcett know.”

’Anyway, there’s a doctor at the house, and now this Ms. Shields is here to look after him. He should be fine, right?’

”Very well,” the butler said. ”You may go.”

Seeing that Anne had something to attend to, he didn’t try to stop her.

Anne Sutton left the Fawcett residence and drove straight home.

She had been counting on her plan—thinking that having a child would change everything. She never expected some ”childhood sweetheart” Ms. Shields to show up and completely derail it.

She could almost see Charles Prescott’s smug face and the Sutton family going bankrupt.

’Forget it!’

’If we go bankrupt, we go bankrupt!’

’Besides, my father’s attitude is making me furious right now. If the worst happens, I’ll just protect Sharon and our mother.’

...

Sharon Sutton was already back home from the hospital. Since she wasn’t feeling well, she hadn’t gone out all day, choosing instead to rest at home.

She was holding her phone, which was filled with apologetic messages from David Hayes. ”Sharon, I really know I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay?”

”I sent you flowers. They should be arriving soon. Please, just forgive me this once, okay?”

Sharon Sutton had previously told him she could arrange a job for him at the Fawcett Group. His family wasn’t well-off, and getting into the Fawcett Group was incredibly difficult. Since Sharon could provide him with this connection, there was no way he would give up such an opportunity.

That’s why, no matter how angry Sharon was right now, he would continue to placate her.

Anne Sutton had just parked her car when a delivery boy brought over a bouquet of flowers. ”Are you Ms. Sutton? These are for you!”

Anne walked over and glanced at the tag, noticing it had Sharon’s phone number on it.

She glanced at the delivery boy, signed for the flowers, and carried them upstairs.

Sharon was at home, and the moment Anne walked in, she got so scared that she quickly hid her phone.

Anne looked at her sister’s pale, frightened expression and asked, ”What’s wrong with you? Am I that terrifying?”

Sharon said, ”Sis, why are you back? I heard Dad say you were at the hospital taking care of Nathan Fawcett.”

”Your flowers,” Anne said.

”Thanks!” Sharon said.

Her heart hammered in her chest. She never expected her sister to be the one to bring her the flowers from David Hayes.

Anne had previously made her delete all of David Hayes’s contact information, but when he sent her a new friend request, she couldn’t resist accepting it.

’If my sister finds out, she’s definitely going to chew me out.’

Anne glanced at her. ”Who sent them?”

”A friend,” Sharon said, changing the subject. ”Why are you back?”

Anne didn’t explain what had happened at the Fawcett residence. ”I’m going to take a nap.”

With that, she went back to her room and lay down.

She slept until evening. When she woke up, she checked her phone, expecting a message from the butler, but there was nothing. No request for her to come over and cook, either.

Mrs. Sutton’s voice came from the doorway. ”Anne, do you want to come eat?”

Anne had been sleeping for a long time. It was already dark out, and Mrs. Sutton, a little worried, had come specifically to wake her.

Anne got up and went downstairs.

Since Sharon was eating in her room, only Sean Sutton and her mother were in the dining room.

Seeing her, Sean Sutton asked, ”Weren’t you at the hospital taking care of Nathan Fawcett? Why are you back? He won’t be angry that you just ran off like this, will he?”

After meeting Nathan Fawcett, Sean Sutton had become somewhat afraid of the man.

He was terrified of offending him.

He no longer dared to say things like forbidding Anne from having Nathan’s child.

He had a feeling that if their scheme was ever exposed, the Sutton family would face dire consequences.

Anne looked at Sean Sutton and said, ”Didn’t you want me to stop seeing him, Dad? Maybe I won’t be going back to his place anymore.”
