Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Sean Sutton asked, ”What’s going on? I was at the hospital. Didn’t Nathan Fawcett say you weren’t allowed to leave? He seems to really care about you.”

”It’s all thanks to Charles Prescott,” Anne Sutton said. ”He found another woman to take care of Nathan Fawcett. Charles just can’t stand to see me doing well, or the Sutton family doing well.”

Mrs. Sutton asked worriedly, ”Is Charles Prescott still giving you a hard time? Is he going too far? If this keeps up, Anne, have your father go talk to Uncle Prescott.”

”Uncle Prescott has been abroad this whole time.” Anne Sutton didn’t think Charles Prescott’s father would help them. ”Besides, he’s always sided with Charles. What good would talking to him do?”

Ever since Charles Prescott’s father got in with Chairman Fawcett and became his adopted son, and with the Sutton Family’s decline, he had always wanted to break off the engagement. He was never satisfied with Anne Sutton, believing that with Charles’s current standing, he could marry a much better woman.

It was Charles, however, who had been unwilling to end things, always dragging his feet.

Before, Anne had been grateful that he didn’t look down on her or abandon the Sutton family.

But ever since that last time at the hospital, she realized how ridiculous she was for shamelessly clinging to him.

Mrs. Sutton fell silent and glanced at Sean Sutton.

Sean Sutton looked at Anne and said, ”Why don’t you just go to Charles Prescott and eat some humble pie? I told you, think about his relationship with Nathan Fawcett! How can we possibly win against him? Opposing him is like throwing an egg against a rock.”

”I won’t go.”

’Go to Charles Prescott?’

’I’d rather die!’

”Then you want to just watch the family go bankrupt?”

”Bankruptcy wouldn’t be so bad,” Anne Sutton said. ”At least things would be simpler. I have my job at the hospital. I can support Mom.”

Sometimes, when you had nothing left to lose, that was just how it was.

The moment Anne finished speaking, Sean Sutton’s face darkened. ”You... you... You want to see me go to jail?”

Mrs. Sutton, standing to the side, said to Anne, ”Anne, don’t be like that! Your father works so hard all day.”

Seeing her mother still defending him at every turn, Anne couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.

...

The butler knocked on Nathan Fawcett’s door and went inside. The lights were on. Nathan was lying in bed, holding his phone and staring intently at a photo on the screen.

The butler asked, ”Sir, are you hungry?”

”I have no appetite.”

”Should I have Ms. Sutton come back and cook for you? You always love her cooking.”

While Nathan Fawcett usually had no appetite for anyone else’s cooking, he was always fond of the meals Anne Sutton made.

Nathan Fawcett asked, ”Where is Anne Sutton?”

He was only just realizing that he hadn’t seen her all afternoon.

The butler said, ”She said she had some things to attend to and went back to her family’s home.”

”Then forget it,” Nathan Fawcett said. ”I don’t want to eat.”

He stared at the photo, his expression complicated.

For the next few days, Anne went straight home after work instead of going to Nathan Fawcett’s place.

Previously, whenever she’d left, an anxious Nathan Fawcett would come looking for her. But this time, he hadn’t come at all, and no one from the Fawcett family had called. She found it rather surprising.

In the morning, Anne got out of bed. She remembered her period was a few days late, so she used a pregnancy test. She discovered she was pregnant.

To be sure, she went to the hospital for a proper test. It confirmed what she already knew: she really was pregnant.

After nearly ten days of no contact with Nathan Fawcett, she was carrying his child.

She had spent the past few days resigning herself to her fate, convincing herself to give up, and then... this.

’And now...’

’Is fate playing a cruel trick on me?’

After work, she drove home, her emotions a tangled mess.

’What would happen if I went to Nathan Fawcett now?’

’Has he lost interest in me? Will he refuse to acknowledge the baby? Will he just kick me out, demand a divorce, and tell me to get rid of it?’

All sorts of chaotic thoughts raced through her mind.

After all, she figured, even if Nathan Fawcett wasn’t with Stella Shields and had no feelings for her... wouldn’t he at least want her to come cook for him?

Mired in these complicated thoughts, Anne returned home. Just as she stepped out of her car, she heard the butler’s voice. ”Ms. Sutton.”

Anne looked up and saw the butler standing in front of a car. It was Nathan Fawcett’s.

The sound of Nathan Fawcett coughing came from inside the car.

Anne asked, ”What are you doing here?”

”Mr. Fawcett said he wanted to come see what you’ve been busy with.” The butler glanced at the car, opened the door, and Nathan Fawcett stepped out.

He was bundled up thickly, sensitive to the cold. Even though it was only early autumn, he was wearing a heavy overcoat.

Anne saw him, not expecting to run into him here, of all places.

Anne asked, ”What brings you here, Mr. Fawcett?”

Nathan Fawcett looked at her and said coldly, ”What, if I hadn’t come, were you just never planning on coming back? Enjoying your carefree little life, are you?”

His tone was dripping with sarcasm and passive-aggression.

Anne hadn’t thought much of it before. Even if he’d taken a liking to Stella Shields, that was his prerogative.

But hearing him speak to her like that now, she felt a surge of indignation. She retorted, ”I’m surprised Mr. Fawcett even remembers me!”

’Shouldn’t he be with Stella Shields right now?’

A moment later, another possibility surfaced: ’He’s here for a divorce!’

After all, they had signed an agreement and gotten their marriage license.

’Those things have to be handled eventually!’

Nathan Fawcett looked at her, about to say something, when another car pulled in through the main gate. Anne glanced over and saw it was her father’s car.

The moment Sean Sutton got out of the car and saw Nathan Fawcett, he jumped in surprise. He hurried over and said, ”Mr. Fawcett.”

Nathan Fawcett glanced at him but didn’t respond.

The man was notoriously moody and wasn’t even polite to his own father, so expecting him to be polite to anyone else was out of the question.

Sean Sutton glanced at Anne and said, ”Why are you just standing out here? Invite Mr. Fawcett in to sit down! Let’s go inside!”

Nathan Fawcett didn’t object.

The group went inside.

As soon as Nathan Fawcett sat down on the sofa, the atmosphere in the Sutton home grew frigid.

Sean Sutton sat to one side and said to Mrs. Sutton, ”What’s for dinner? Tell the cook to make a few extra dishes. It’s rare for Mr. Fawcett to visit.”

”Don’t bother,” Anne said. ”He won’t eat it anyway.”

He was always a picky eater.

’He’s endlessly critical of his own chefs, so how could the Sutton family’s cook possibly pass muster?’

’It’s just...’

Anne was a little curious. ’How has he been managing all this time?’

’He can’t have just stopped eating entirely while I was gone, right?’

The butler glanced at Anne and said, ”Then we’ll have to trouble you, Ms. Sutton.”

The meaning was clear: he wanted Anne to cook.
