Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

A man hates nothing more than hearing a woman compare him unfavorably to another man.

Charles Prescott said, ”I know you’re still holding out hope for Nathan Fawcett. You won’t listen to a word I say. But go ahead, go to him. Go and see if Nathan Fawcett still wants you! Just let me remind you—if you walk out that door today, I won’t give you another chance. If you come crawling back to me, I won’t take you! Vera was right. You’re not ’clean’ anymore! What makes you think you’re so indispensable to me?”

’It’s because I’ve been acting like I care too much,’ he thought. ’That’s what’s made her so dramatic.’

’Let her go. When she finds out Nathan Fawcett won’t even see her, she’ll definitely come back begging me!’

’After all, I don’t believe for a second that she doesn’t care about what happens to the Sutton Family.’

Anne Sutton glanced at him. ”Don’t worry. Even if the Sutton Family goes bankrupt, I will never come back to you.”

With that, Anne Sutton turned to leave, but Charles Prescott called out to her. ”Anne Sutton, did you really never like me? Not even a little?”

”...” His question sent a pang of bitterness through Anne Sutton’s heart.

She remembered the first time she saw him, appearing so dashing and suave in the courtyard of the Sutton estate...

’He was so exceptional. How could she not have been captivated?’

’When they were engaged, she even felt like the happiest person on earth.’

’But what happened after that?’

’Time and again, she found traces of him with other women.’

’She discovered that while he treated her well, he never stopped seeing other women behind her back. In that instant, her infatuation vanished.’

’Theirs was just a marriage of convenience. She had slowly come to her senses.’

Now, looking at him, he just felt like a stranger. She could no longer find a trace of the thrill she once felt.

Anne Sutton said, ”Maybe I did, once. But I never will again.”

’She wasn’t that teenager anymore!’

Charles Prescott’s eyes darkened as Anne Sutton walked straight out the door.

When she got back to Nathan Fawcett’s villa, the entire building was silent.

Only the living room lights were on. Anne Sutton sat in her car, not getting out yet. She glanced at her phone and opened a file—a recording of her conversation with Charles Prescott.

She had gone to see Charles Prescott to clear up the matter of the birth control pills. After all, she had no intention of taking the fall for something she hadn’t done.

’He wants to disrupt my plans, but I won’t let him get his way.’

Anne Sutton grabbed her phone and walked inside. A housekeeper came out to greet her. ”Ms. Sutton, you’re back.”

Her relationship with Nathan Fawcett had soured, and even their form of address had changed. It was just as Charles Prescott had said—the moment there was trouble, Nathan Fawcett wanted to kick her out.

But right now, she would rather put up with his temper than see the smug look on Charles Prescott’s face.

Anne Sutton asked, ”Where is Mr. Fawcett?”

”He’s gone to the hospital.”

”Why the hospital at this hour?” ’He should be getting ready for bed by now.’

The housekeeper replied, ”It’s because you made him so angry. He got so upset he had to be rushed to the hospital! They said it’s quite serious. I just came back to grab some things and was about to head over.”

Anne Sutton noticed the bag in the housekeeper’s hand. ”Let me go with you. I can drive you. I want to see Mr. Fawcett, too.”

The housekeeper hesitated.

Anne Sutton said, ”We’re legally married. I’m still his wife. Have you ever seen a married couple stay on the outs for long after a little fight?”

At her words, the housekeeper’s attitude immediately shifted. ’That’s true...’ she thought.

’If Ms. Sutton and Mr. Fawcett make up later, she might hold a grudge against me for my poor attitude now!’

Anne Sutton drove the housekeeper to the hospital.

She followed the housekeeper to Nathan Fawcett’s room. To be honest, even though Nathan was at the same hospital where she worked, she had never once appeared here with him.

’We’re in different departments, after all.’

Nathan Fawcett’s hospital room was under tight security, with several bodyguards standing guard at the door.

When they saw the housekeeper, they let her pass without issue.

But when their eyes fell on Anne Sutton, their expressions grew complicated.

”I’m his wife,” Anne Sutton said. ”I want to see him.”

”...Apologies, but we have orders from above. No one else is allowed in.”

”Not even me?” Anne Sutton stared at the bodyguard in disbelief.

The bodyguard shook his head. ”Mr. Fawcett’s condition is not good. He can’t see any outsiders.”

”How am I an outsider?” Anne Sutton said. ”We’re legally married. I can show you the certificate.”

The man looked at her. ”We know who you are, Ms. Sutton.”

”...”

’So they know I’m with Nathan Fawcett, but they still won’t let me in?’

’Is this what Nathan Fawcett wants?’

Anne Sutton asked, ”How is Nathan Fawcett now? Is he okay?”

The guard glanced at her. ”No comment.”

”...”

Anne Sutton took in their icy demeanor and realized she wasn’t getting in.

She turned around and saw Charles Prescott arriving.

He was always the first to show up whenever something happened with Nathan Fawcett.

Seeing him, the guard said, ”Mr. Prescott.”

Charles Prescott’s gaze fell on Anne Sutton. ”Why aren’t you going in?” he asked.

Anne Sutton knew he was mocking her.

’He knows perfectly well I can’t get in!’

”You arranged for them, didn’t you?” Anne Sutton asked.

Charles Prescott said, ”You offended Uncle. He doesn’t want to see you. So... does it matter that I made these arrangements?”

It was true. He had arranged for them.

’How could I possibly let Anne Sutton see Nathan Fawcett?’

’From the moment Nathan Fawcett kicked her out, I swore I’d never let her see him again!’

’I’ll make her understand who really has pull in the Fawcett Family—me, or her.’

’The fact that she’d even think of opposing me is laughable. It’s like an egg trying to break a rock!’

Moments later, Charles Prescott walked through the door. Anne Sutton was left standing outside, realizing that with these men blocking her way, even seeing Nathan Fawcett was now an impossible wish.

...

Charles Prescott entered the room to find Nathan Fawcett lying in the hospital bed, with Chairman Fawcett at his side.

The butler was there as well.

Charles Prescott walked in and asked, ”How is Uncle?”

Chairman Fawcett said, ”He still hasn’t woken up. His condition was stable, wasn’t it? How did this happen?”

After he spoke, he glanced at the butler standing nearby.

The butler heard Chairman Fawcett but remained silent.

Charles Prescott saw his opening. ”It was Anne Sutton,” he interjected. ”She made Uncle angry.”

”What good is she?” Chairman Fawcett’s temper flared. ”I brought her here to take care of Nathan, not to give him a heart attack!”

Charles Prescott said, ”I heard that... while she’s been with Uncle, Anne Sutton has been taking birth control pills. This whole thing is my fault. It would have been better if it had been Sharon Sutton who came here instead of Anne.”

”...” Chairman Fawcett looked at Charles Prescott. ”Why would she do that? If she doesn’t want to have a child, then what is she even doing here?”
