Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

”Not a shred of human warmth,” Anne Sutton said.

Nathan Fawcett stared at the woman, silent.

...

At the hospital, Anne Sutton was at her desk. A young woman sat in the chair across from her, looking utterly shocked by the news. ”I... I’m pregnant?”

The young woman looked to be in her early twenties, perhaps not even that old.

Anne Sutton nodded. ”Yes. Congratulations.”

The girl’s face, however, showed no trace of joy. Weighed down by her thoughts, she said, ”Dr. Sutton, I want to terminate this pregnancy.”

For some reason, Anne Sutton’s mind immediately went to Sylvia Warren.

However...

She quickly snapped back to reality. ’The incident with Sylvia Warren was an exception. It’s not like I’m new at this.’

That was why she hadn’t suspected a thing the last time Sylvia Warren showed up and had walked right into a trap.

Anne Sutton asked, ”Why?”

The girl said, ”I’m still a student. I have to finish my education, and... the baby’s father probably doesn’t want it either.”

Anne Sutton quickly pieced it together. ’Young people getting a little too carried away...’

’Now there’s a baby, and they’re not prepared to deal with it.’

Anne Sutton said, ”What about your boyfriend?”

The girl hesitated for a moment. ”I’ll give him a call. I’ll go back and discuss it with him, then come back to see you.”

Anne Sutton looked at her. ”Alright.”

The girl left quickly.

Anne Sutton’s phone rang. She glanced at it and saw it was her mother calling. She answered, ”Mom.”

”Anne,” Mrs. Sutton said, ”I made your favorite spicy chicken. Why don’t you come home for dinner tonight? You’ve been so busy lately, haven’t you?”

Anne Sutton used to live at home, but now that she had moved in with the Fawcett family, Mrs. Sutton rarely saw her. She missed her daughter, so she called.

Hearing this, Anne also missed her mother’s cooking. ”I’d love to, but I can’t make it. I’m at work today, and I have to go make dinner for Nathan Fawcett later.”

It was precisely to make dinner for Nathan Fawcett that she didn’t even have to work overtime anymore; the hospital had specially adjusted her work schedule.

If she went home for dinner and made Nathan Fawcett wait, he would get angry again.

Mrs. Sutton sighed. ”Look at you... getting married just like that! So suddenly, and without even a wedding. You married that man, and I barely had time to react.”

Anne Sutton and Nathan Fawcett had only registered their marriage; they hadn’t even had a proper wedding. The more Mrs. Sutton thought about it, the more she felt her daughter had been wronged. Anne could hear the regret in her mother’s voice, even over the phone.

”A wedding is nothing special,” Anne Sutton said. ”It’s just exhausting and a lot of work. I’m actually pretty happy to skip it.”

”Happy?” Mrs. Sutton exclaimed. ”What’s there to be happy about? I didn’t get to see my daughter get married in a beautiful, grand ceremony. Do you have any idea how many nights I lie awake thinking about this?”

In everyone’s eyes, Anne Sutton had been wronged by marrying Nathan Fawcett.

After all, he was dying, and the Fawcett family was in no position to host a wedding for them.

The thought of her daughter, whom she had raised for so many years, being forced into such a pitiful marriage with a dying man, was unbearable for Mrs. Sutton.

”Mom, I’m fine,” Anne Sutton said. ”I really don’t feel like I’ve been wronged, so please don’t overthink it. How about this? I’ll come see you in a couple of days when I have time off.”

Mrs. Sutton nodded. ”Alright. You take care of yourself.”

With that, she hung up. Anne Sutton stared at her phone. ’I never thought Mom would be so heartbroken over my marriage to Nathan Fawcett.’

’Then again...’

’They don’t see it the way I do.’

’They think a daughter should marry someone she can depend on.’

’And in their eyes, Nathan Fawcett obviously doesn’t fit that description.’

The next morning, Anne Sutton received a message from her mother. ”I’m having Sharon bring you some food for lunch. You can eat it at the hospital.”

A small smile touched Anne Sutton’s lips as she read the message. ’Though Mom’s personality is a bit meek, she’s always been so good to Sharon and me.’

She replied, ”Okay.”

’It really is nice to be spoiled by my mom.’

’But...’

’...thinking about what Mom said about Dad last time...’

’She’s really had to put up with a lot all these years.’

...

The pregnant girl from the previous afternoon came to check in again, but this time, her young boyfriend was with her.

The boyfriend wasn’t much older; they were around the same age, likely both university students.

The couple was filling out paperwork for the abortion procedure before going to pay the fees.

The morning was busy with appointments, so by the time Anne Sutton finished with the couple, it was already noon.

Sharon Sutton walked over. ”Sis.”

Seeing her, Anne Sutton asked, ”What are you doing here?”

”I didn’t know when you’d be done, so I just made an appointment to see you,” she said, handing over an insulated container. ”Mom asked me to bring this. She specifically told me to deliver it in person. She really dotes on you.”

Anne Sutton said, ”If you had married Nathan Fawcett, she would probably be doting on you like this now too.”

Anne Sutton was just joking.

Because she knew her mother loved both her and Sharon, and her mother would be heartbroken if either of them was wronged.

But as soon as Sharon heard it, her expression crumpled. ”I’m sorry, Sis,” she said, her voice thick with guilt. ”It’s all my fault. You’re only in this situation because of me! If not for that, you might still be with Mr. Prescott.”

”...” Anne Sutton sighed, a headache forming. ”Why are you bringing up Charles Prescott again?”

’What’s so great about Charles Prescott, anyway?’

’Even if I weren’t with Nathan Fawcett, I’d never have a future with someone of Charles Prescott’s character.’

Sharon looked at her sister. Seeing she didn’t want to hear it, she dropped the subject. ’Anyway, in two months, after Nathan Fawcett is gone, Sis can get back together with Charles Prescott.’

Sharon Sutton said, ”You get back to work. I’m heading back now.”

”Okay.”

After Sharon Sutton left, Anne Sutton opened the insulated container. She smiled at the sight of her mother’s cooking. Her shift was over, so she got ready to go eat.

Just as she stepped out with the container, her assistant rushed over. ”Dr. Sutton, your sister’s fighting with someone!”

”What happened?” ’Sharon’s in a fight?’

’I can’t even imagine that.’

She walked over and saw Sharon Sutton, clutching a handful of another girl’s hair. The girl was none other than Anne Sutton’s patient—the pregnant university student.

Sharon Sutton had the girl by the hair while the young man beside them tried to intervene. ”Sharon Sutton, stop this! Are you crazy?!”

”I’m crazy?” Sharon Sutton cried in disbelief. ”You kept telling me you liked me, but now you’re with her, and you two have a child!”

She couldn’t believe it. Just a few days ago, they had been on a date. She had even been worried about his future. And now, she found out he’d gotten another woman pregnant!
