The Last Silver

The knocking came through the probe’s contact microphone.

Three blows.

A pause.

Then two more.

Asha stopped breathing long enough for Eve to glance at her.

On the screen, the western refuge remained a dark rectangle beneath layers of damaged bracing. Its outer door bore the same three lines and incomplete circle they had found at Ilyra Sen’s station.

The probe had touched the frame eleven minutes earlier.

It had taken that long for someone inside to answer.

“Play it again,” Alexander said.

Eve did.

Three blows.

Two.

Aramaeis moved closer to the speaker.

“That’s a maintenance signal.”

“What does it mean?” Dinraal asked.

His uncle’s face had gone very still.

“Occupied. Pressure uncertain. Don’t cut.”

They sent their answer through the hull.

The probe struck the frame with its small manipulator.

Relief outside. Await connection.

Then they waited.

Nobody filled the silence.

Dinraal stood beside Isolde, watching a door that might have been keeping people alive since before either of them had been born.

The reply came slowly enough that the spaces between the blows seemed wrong.

Asha compared the sound with the probe’s internal clock.

“The rate changes near the frame,” she said. “Much more sharply than along the service passage.”

“How much?” Alexander asked.

“I can’t give you a reliable number yet.”

“Then we don’t send anyone across it.”

Aramaeis opened his mouth.

Alexander met his eyes.

“We know there are people in there. That makes it more important that the next people we send can return.”

After a moment, Aramaeis nodded.

The final blow sounded.

He translated.

Eleven living. Three dead. Air failing.

Dinraal looked toward the pressure shelters stacked beside the hangar doors.

“How quickly can we get a sealed connection onto that frame?”

Enna was already leaving.

The answer was fourteen hours.

Dinraal disliked every one of them.

Enna spent most of that time inside a pressure collar assembled from a cargo lock, two inspection sleeves, and fittings removed from the detached berth.

The Imperial fabrication specialist helped without arguing, which Dinraal suspected was why Enna had begun trusting him.

They tested the collar.

It leaked.

They repaired it.

It held.

Then they tested the emergency release and discovered that the second sleeve fouled the first.

Gilgamesh watched Enna stare at it.

“Would you like me to break something?”

“Yes.”

“Something specific?”

She pointed.

He looked relieved.

Across the hangar, Johanna prepared eleven medical places.

Not eight.

Not six with room to improvise.

Eleven.

When Dinraal stopped beside her, she handed him a folded blanket.

“Put that in the warming cabinet.”

He did.

Then she gave him another.

By the fifth, he understood.

“You’re keeping me occupied.”

“You were about to ask Enna how long.”

“I could help her.”

“You can help me.”

He took the next blanket.

Aramaeis was in the observation compartment when Isolde found him.

Ilyra’s identification plate lay in his palm.

“She told them relief was coming,” he said.

Isolde sat beside him.

“Did you find that in the records?”

He nodded.

“An outgoing message. Before the line failed.”

Outside, the staging ships moved against the stars. One transport was preparing to carry the newly rescued civilians away from the arc.

“She couldn’t have known.”

“No,” Isolde said.

“She sent the message anyway.”

Isolde considered that.

“Perhaps she meant that someone would try.”

Aramaeis rubbed his thumb along the damaged edge of the plate.

“I used to hate promises like that. Officers would make them because frightened people worked better when they thought help was on its way.”

“And now?”

“Now I’m hoping hers kept them alive.”

The door opened.

Dinraal stepped inside carrying three cups.

Aramaeis looked at him.

“Johanna?”

“Apparently there’s a limit to how many blankets one man can fold.”

Dinraal handed him a cup and sat on Isolde’s other side.

For a while, they drank in silence.

Then Aramaeis said, “They may ask what happened to the army.”

Dinraal waited.

“I don’t know how to answer in a way that won’t hurt them.”

“You probably can’t,” Isolde said gently.

Aramaeis looked down.

Dinraal leaned forward.

“You can tell them after they’ve eaten.”

His uncle gave a faint, weary smile.

“Yes,” he said. “I suppose I can.”

They approached the refuge along the route recorded by the detached berth.

The passage was mostly empty.

That worried Dinraal more than resistance would have.

Pale growth covered the entrances to two adjoining corridors, but none crossed the final stretch toward the refuge. The old structure had twisted there, leaving the door at an angle that made his eyes want to correct it.

“Reference boundary ahead,” Eve said.

Two clocks appeared inside his visor.

Their seconds no longer changed together.

Enna stopped at the anchor point marked by the probe.

“Collar first.”

Gilgamesh guided the assembly into position while Dinraal and Isolde secured its outer braces.

The refuge frame felt cold through his silver.

Not ordinary cold.

His fingertips seemed slow to return the sensation.

He withdrew his hand.

“Contact delay,” he said.

“Recorded,” Eve answered. “Don’t reach through the opening until we’ve stabilized it.”

Enna attached the independent air supply.

Aramaeis connected the signal line.

Then the knocking came again.

This close, Dinraal could feel it through his boots.

Is anyone there?

Aramaeis closed his eyes briefly.

Their fourteen hours of work had not passed the same way inside.

He answered with the probe’s striker.

We are here.

The first attempt to establish the reference failed.

Silver spread across the collar’s inner ring.

For a moment, the twisted doorway straightened.

Then the passage seemed to lengthen.

Dinraal’s stomach lurched.

Isolde caught his forearm.

“Release.”

He did.

The silver withdrew, and the doorway returned to its wrong angle.

Enna swore softly.

“What happened?”

Eve examined the readings from the recovery craft.

“You tried to carry the whole refuge onto our reference at once. The load increased faster than the assembly could compensate.”

“Can we strengthen it?” Dinraal asked.

“We could,” Isolde said. “But the people inside would experience whatever we just experienced.”

Johanna’s voice came over the channel.

“And some of them may not survive it.”

Dinraal looked through the collar.

The inner door remained closed.

Someone was standing on the other side, waiting.

“Smaller,” he said.

Enna turned toward him.

“We stabilize the lock. Just the lock.”

She considered the assembly.

“Two boundaries. Outer sleeve holds our reference. Inner sleeve adjusts to theirs.”

“Can it do that?”

“It can if nobody asks it to do anything else.”

Asha began calculating.

This time, they worked slowly.

Dinraal held the outer ring.

Isolde took the inner.

Between their hands, the silver changed by increments so small he could barely see them.

The two clocks drew closer.

Not equal.

Close enough.

Enna watched the pressure indicators.

“Seal established.”

Aramaeis sent one more message.

Open into the collar only.

There was a long pause.

Then something moved behind the door.

The woman who opened it held a wrench in both hands.

She wore an engineer’s uniform beneath a pressure vest patched with adhesive strips. Her left cheek was bruised. Someone had cut her hair unevenly above her collar.

She looked at Aramaeis.

Then at Dinraal and Isolde.

The wrench lowered an inch.

“Relief?”

“Yes,” Aramaeis said.

Her mouth moved.

No sound came.

Then she stepped aside.

The refuge was scarcely larger than a ship’s mess.

Eleven people occupied it.

Three lay beneath blankets along the far wall. Two others sat beside a dismantled air scrubber, turning a handle between them.

Nobody stopped turning.

Dinraal saw a line of marks beside the door.

Nineteen groups.

The woman followed his gaze.

“Nineteen days since we sealed,” she said. “We lost the station clock.”

Aramaeis’s expression did not change.

Dinraal was grateful for that.

“I’m Engineer Teren,” she continued. “Western service crew. We have three who can’t walk.”

“Medical team is outside,” Isolde said. “We’ll move them first.”

Teren looked behind them.

“How many ships made it?”

Nobody answered quickly enough.

Her grip tightened on the wrench.

“How many?”

Aramaeis stepped closer.

“We came from a later relief effort. The time difference here is severe.”

She stared at him.

“The closure?”

“Failed.”

“And command?”

“We haven’t found them.”

Teren looked toward the people turning the scrubber.

For a moment, Dinraal thought she might sit down.

Instead, she put the wrench carefully on a shelf.

“All right,” she said.

Her voice was very quiet.

“Tell me what you need us to do.”

They moved the injured through one at a time.

The collar adjusted between transfers.

Each person arrived with a brief expression of bewilderment, as though the floor had moved beneath them.

Johanna received them on the outer side.

Names first.

Breathing.

Pulse.

A hand on a shoulder.

Simple things that belonged to an ordinary medical ward.

Inside, Isolde helped an older technician fold a blanket around a small metal case.

“Personal belongings?” she asked.

He nodded.

“My wife’s letters.”

“You can bring them.”

“I know they’ll have been told—”

He stopped.

Isolde waited.

He pressed the case against his chest.

“Has it been years?”

“Yes,” she said.

His eyes closed.

She stayed beside him until he was ready to stand.

Across the room, Dinraal knelt beside the scrubber.

The two crew members kept turning.

“You can stop now.”

One shook his head.

“Pressure drops if we stop.”

“We’ve connected an outside supply.”

The man looked at the gauge.

Its needle was steady.

He turned the handle twice more.

Then his hands fell into his lap.

Dinraal helped him up.

When the room held only Teren and the rescuers, she pointed toward a partition.

“Our dead.”

“We’ll take them too,” Dinraal said.

She nodded once.

That was when she began to cry.

Teren insisted on bringing the refuge’s work slate.

She also brought a cylinder wrapped in insulation.

Enna saw it and stopped.

“Is that a control spindle?”

Teren looked at her properly for the first time.

“Yes.”

“From where?”

“Western command.”

Enna’s gaze flicked toward Aramaeis.

“The station was sending acknowledgments.”

“It would. We left the automatic receiver intact.”

“You disabled the controls?”

Teren’s face hardened.

“We removed them.”

The last stretcher crossed the collar.

Alexander called for their status.

“Eleven living recovered,” Isolde answered. “Three deceased recovered. Final team withdrawing.”

Enna took one end of the cylinder.

Teren kept hold of the other.

“What was wrong with the controls?” Enna asked.

Teren looked back into the empty refuge.

“They started completing instructions nobody had entered.”

They did not discuss it properly until Teren had slept.

Johanna made certain of that.

Dinraal and Isolde slept too, curled together in their narrow bunk while the recovery ship returned to staging.

When he woke, her hand was tucked beneath his.

For several seconds, he listened to her breathing.

Then she opened one eye.

“Don’t.”

“I haven’t moved.”

“You were considering it.”

“The briefing—”

“Is in forty minutes.”

“How do you know?”

“I asked before we lay down.”

He settled again.

She closed her eye.

A moment later, she said, “Nineteen days.”

“I know.”

“They kept taking turns at the scrubber.”

Dinraal looked toward the ceiling.

“Yes.”

Her fingers tightened.

“I’m glad we found them.”

He kissed her forehead.

“So am I.”

Teren ate half a bowl of soup before speaking.

Enna had placed the control spindle on the table between them.

It was a plain piece of machinery.

Scratched casing. Three mechanical contacts. A handle worn smooth by use.

Dinraal had expected something more impressive.

Teren noticed.

“It doesn’t do the difficult work,” she said. “It tells the difficult machinery which work it’s allowed to do.”

Eve brought up the arc diagram.

Teren stared at the captured ships.

For a long time, she said nothing.

Then she pointed.

“That wasn’t there.”

“No.”

“Or that.”

“No.”

Her finger moved toward the central darkness.

“And that should never have reached the inner bracing.”

Asha sat forward.

“Can you tell us what the severance mechanism was intended to cut?”

“The original contact throat. The narrow connection behind the opening.”

“Would that kill it?” Dinraal asked.

Teren shook her head.

“We weren’t building a weapon. We were trying to close the breach.”

The room grew quieter.

“It had already established other connections,” she continued. “We knew that. Closing this one wouldn’t undo everything. But it would remove the largest route we had measured.”

Eve changed the projection to the failed closure sequence.

Three sections flashed red.

Teren watched.

Then she leaned forward.

“Stop there.”

Eve froze the image.

“That command. Enlarge it.”

A line appeared above the broken sections.

Occupied external loads detected. Protective hold maintained.

Enna frowned.

“The ships prevented closure?”

“They shouldn’t have. We had already ordered those berths released.”

Teren’s eyes moved across the record.

“There.”

Another instruction.

Reassign external berths to protected interior.

Dinraal read it twice.

“It changed where the machine thought the ships were.”

“Yes.”

“So the machinery held the opening for them.”

Teren looked sick.

“The safeguards were meant to prevent us cutting through evacuation traffic.”

Isolde studied the crowded arc.

“And it has kept adding ships.”

“More than ships,” Eve said quietly. “Life-support compartments. Transfer lines. Anything the system would refuse to sever while occupied.”

For the first time, Dinraal understood why so much stolen machinery remained attached to the structure.

Some of it supplied power.

Some carried prisoners.

And some kept an ancient emergency system trapped inside its own instructions.

Alexander arrived before the meeting ended.

He listened without interrupting.

Then he pointed to the western station.

“Can we take this back?”

Teren looked at the control spindle.

“If the local mechanism survives, yes. But restoring the old network would expose it to the same commands.”

“We won’t restore the network,” Enna said.

She pulled the diagram toward her.

“Independent supply. Physical controls. Someone standing beside every moving assembly.”

Asha began marking the three failed sections.

“We’ll need current inspections.”

“And the occupied berths cleared,” Isolde said.

Alexander nodded.

“We have three allied escorts preparing to join us. I’ll request towing crews and pressure shelters with them.”

Dinraal looked at the arc.

The task was enormous.

But it had acquired edges.

They could separate the ships.

Take back the stations.

Repair the three failed sections.

Close the original breach without pretending that doing so would erase every danger the Questioner had already sent into the world.

Beside him, Aramaeis laid Ilyra Sen’s identification plate on the table.

Teren recognized it immediately.

Her hand rose to her mouth.

“She stayed?”

“Yes,” Aramaeis said.

“Did she know we got the refuge sealed?”

He hesitated.

“The line had failed.”

Teren looked down at the plate.

After a while, she touched it with two fingers.

“We got it sealed,” she whispered.

Nobody spoke until she moved her hand away.

Then she drew the work slate toward her and opened its diagrams.

“Ilyra marked a maintenance route under the western actuator,” she said. “It should let your inspection crew reach the mechanism without entering the central chamber.”

Enna pulled up a chair beside her.

“Show me.”

Teren did.
