The Last Silver

Chapter 50: The Distance Between Stars

The recording began with a ship breaking apart.

Dinraal had expected a briefing. A commander standing before a map, perhaps, explaining the decisions that had earned the report its promising title.

Instead, a vessel split along its spine.

Light spilled from the wound.

The image shook as fragments struck whatever carried the recording instrument.

Beside him, Isolde drew a slow breath.

Asha reached toward the console.

“Wait.”

The image froze.

She enlarged the text beneath it.

“Successful engagement,” she read. “Objective: interrupt manifestation and permit civilian withdrawal.”

Dinraal looked at the shattered ship.

“How many?”

The custodian answered from beside the doorway.

“Military fatalities: two hundred and nineteen. Civilian vessels withdrawn: thirty-four.”

Aramaeis’s jaw tightened.

“Continue.”

Asha looked at him.

“Please,” he added.

The recording resumed.

Beyond the dying vessel, darkness occupied a portion of the star field.

Dinraal recognized it immediately.

His gauntlet crept farther over his fingers.

Three points of silver light moved along the edge of the darkness. At first, they appeared insignificant against its size.

Then the image changed to a tactical reconstruction.

A ring of stations surrounded a transit junction.

Several had already gone dark.

Others continued transmitting.

A voice cut through the static.

“Do not engage the central mass. Repeat, central mass is not a confirmed target.”

Another voice answered.

“Third anchor is active.”

“Cut the physical connection.”

“We have personnel aboard.”

A pause.

Then, quieter—

“Get them off.”

Dinraal leaned forward.

On the reconstruction, one of the silver lights reached a station.

Its outer shell opened in a brilliant white line.

The station’s transmission stopped.

For a fraction of a second, the darkness beyond it thinned.

Stars appeared through the gap.

Isolde touched Dinraal’s arm.

“There.”

“I saw it.”

The recording accelerated through several minutes of corrupted footage.

Two stations vanished.

A third fired at its own escorts.

Then the three silver lights spread around the last active structure.

Lines of pale radiance formed between them.

Dinraal felt something stir beneath his skin.

Beside him, Isolde went rigid.

Their armor recognized the arrangement.

Not as a memory he could see.

As a movement his body almost knew how to make.

The station collapsed inward.

The darkness folded.

A vast edge drew back across the stars, pulling wreckage toward a point that had not existed a moment earlier.

Then it was gone.

The remaining ships continued moving.

Nobody cheered.

A voice began counting civilian vessels.

The recording ended before the count was complete.

For a while, only the archive’s ventilation disturbed the silence.

Asha replayed the final sequence without sound.

“They weren’t trying to overpower the whole thing,” she said.

Aramaeis stood close to the display.

“They were removing what held it there.”

The custodian’s lens turned.

“Terminology consistent with deposited analysis.”

Dinraal looked toward it.

“Explain.”

“Local manifestation was sustained through three confirmed anchor structures. Destruction of those structures reduced stability. Final interdiction severed the remaining connection.”

“Connection to where?”

“Unresolved.”

Asha rested both hands on the console.

“The stations had been incorporated into the event. That doesn’t mean the Questioner needs a station every time.”

“No,” Isolde said. “But it needed something.”

Dinraal remembered the Sovereign’s last signal.

The way the stars had begun disappearing afterward.

“A Sovereign?”

“Possible,” the custodian replied. “Related analysis exists.”

Asha opened the linked report.

Pages unfolded across the display.

At first, Dinraal could follow very little of it.

Then she brought up a diagram of an Ashen formation.

Individual units surrounded larger command organisms. Those organisms linked to something beyond the edge of the illustration.

“Their hierarchy carries more than orders,” she said slowly.

Aramaeis nodded.

“It carries coordination.”

“And power,” Isolde said.

Asha glanced at her.

Isolde was staring at the final frame of the battle.

“When the Sovereign died, something reached through what it had been holding.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Asha began comparing the timestamps.

Alexander called from the cutter while they were still working.

“Status.”

Dinraal answered through the physical line they had run back to the docking recess.

“We’ve found a way it was driven out.”

“Destroyed?”

“No.”

A brief silence followed.

“Still an improvement.”

Dinraal looked at the casualty figures.

“Yes.”

“How much longer?”

Asha held up two fingers.

Dinraal watched her.

“Hours?”

She hesitated.

Alexander sighed audibly.

“I heard that hesitation.”

“We need copies of the full analysis,” she said. “And the related medical records.”

“You have four hours before I insist everyone eats aboard the ship.”

“Six.”

“Four.”

Asha looked offended by his refusal to negotiate.

Dinraal smiled despite himself.

“Four,” he agreed.

Aramaeis found the names in a separate directory.

He did not announce it.

Dinraal noticed only because his uncle stopped moving.

The display in front of him held a service photograph.

A woman stood beside an open transport hatch, one hand lifted to shield her eyes from the light. Someone outside the image had apparently said something amusing.

She was laughing.

Below the photograph lay three lines of text.

Dinraal approached quietly.

“Someone you knew?”

Aramaeis nodded.

“Veyra.”

He spoke the name with the care of someone setting down something fragile.

“She repaired our equipment. Badly, according to her. Perfectly, according to everyone who had to depend on it.”

Dinraal looked at the record.

“Listed as transferred.”

“That was the official report.”

Aramaeis opened the attached testimony.

A medic’s account appeared.

Veyra had stayed aboard a damaged evacuation vessel to keep its failing field generator running.

The vessel had reached safety.

She had not survived the effort.

Aramaeis read to the end.

Then he read it again.

“Why change it?” Dinraal asked.

His uncle’s voice was rough.

“The generator should have been replaced before deployment. She filed the request.”

Dinraal understood.

A casualty that invited questions had become a transfer that invited none.

“Can we take the record?”

Aramaeis looked at him.

“All of it,” Dinraal said. “The photograph too.”

His uncle nodded once.

Across the room, Isolde had begun opening the other personnel entries.

Asha quietly redirected one of their storage units toward the directory.

The custodian watched.

“Correction authority may attach witness testimony.”

Aramaeis turned toward it.

“What?”

“You may add what you remember.”

He looked back at Veyra’s photograph.

After a long moment, he sat.

“My name is Aramaeis,” he began.

His voice steadied as he continued.

“I served with her.”

Dinraal and Isolde stepped into the corridor while his uncle recorded.

Neither wanted to leave him alone.

Neither wanted him to feel observed.

The First Weapon followed them and settled near the doorway.

Dinraal lowered himself against the wall.

Isolde sat beside him.

He watched the silver move across his knuckles.

“You felt it.”

She nodded.

“When they formed the lines.”

“Do you think we can do that?”

“I think we recognized part of it.”

He turned toward her.

“That isn’t the same as knowing how.”

“No.”

She took his hand before the silver could spread farther.

For a while, they listened to Aramaeis’s distant voice.

Then Dinraal said, “I saw the opening and thought about how quickly we could learn it.”

Isolde looked at him.

“I barely noticed the ship was gone.”

“You noticed.”

“Not enough.”

She rested her shoulder against his.

“We came here needing something we could use. It makes sense that you looked for it.”

He looked toward the archive room.

“I don’t want those people to become instructions.”

Isolde’s fingers tightened around his.

“Then we take their names home with the instructions.”

The archive held more than battle records.

Asha discovered agricultural research from worlds that no longer appeared on modern charts. Medical studies. Materials specifications. Construction methods designed for isolated settlements with limited manufacturing.

When she opened a library of educational texts, she made a sound that brought Dinraal back through the doorway.

“What?”

“Nothing dangerous.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

She turned the display toward him.

Schoolbooks.

Thousands of them.

Basic arithmetic beside advanced mathematics. Histories in languages the software could barely identify. Lessons in music, drawing, engineering, literature.

Isolde moved closer.

“Nessa.”

Asha nodded.

“We can bring her enough material to teach for the rest of her life.”

Dinraal looked around the sealed room.

How much had been sitting here while people tried to rebuild from fragments?

The custodian approached on its small mechanical legs.

“Export storage capacity insufficient for all selected holdings.”

Asha stared at it.

“How insufficient?”

“Significantly.”

Alexander’s voice returned through the line.

“Whatever you’re considering, remember the cutter has to leave again.”

Isolde laughed softly.

Asha did not.

“We’ll prioritize.”

The effort required to say it seemed considerable.

They made their final discovery while selecting those priorities.

Asha opened an engineering attachment from the successful engagement.

Three silver figures appeared around a damaged station.

Beside them stood a fourth object.

A compact structure formed from concentric, incomplete rings.

Dinraal studied it.

“What is that?”

“A reference assembly,” Asha said, reading. “It gave the operators a stable local measurement while the surrounding space was being distorted.”

“Can we build one?”

She scrolled.

“Yes.”

The speed of her answer brought everyone closer.

She checked again.

“Yes,” she repeated. “The materials are ordinary. Some components are difficult, but the colony’s workshops should manage them.”

Aramaeis leaned over her shoulder.

“The silver supplies the field?”

“According to this.”

Dinraal looked toward Isolde.

She was already reading the next section.

“Not just an attack,” she said.

Asha followed her gaze.

The diagram changed.

The rings expanded into an array distributed around an inhabited world.

“Early warning,” Asha murmured. “And resistance to the first stage of attachment.”

Dinraal felt his pulse quicken.

“Hearth.”

Asha nodded, but lifted a hand before he could speak again.

“A trial array. We build one assembly, test it well away from the settlement, and compare the results with the original records.”

He looked back at the diagram.

For the first time, he could imagine doing more than posting ships and waiting for the sky to change.

“Then that comes with us.”

“It already is.”

Before leaving, Dinraal returned to the custodian.

The little machine stood beside an open storage column, checking the replacements Asha had installed in exchange for several failing memory units.

“Will you be all right here?”

Its lens turned toward him.

“Current maintenance capacity is reduced.”

“How reduced?”

A list appeared on the nearest terminal.

It was long.

Dinraal read enough to understand that the anchorage had survived through careful sacrifice.

Unused rooms had been sealed.

Damaged systems disconnected.

Sections of the archive had been copied elsewhere before their storage failed.

Others had not been so fortunate.

“We can bring equipment,” he said. “Engineers.”

“Personnel access requires—”

“We’ll bring Aramaeis.”

The custodian paused.

“Acceptable.”

Dinraal glanced toward the corridor.

“Would you want to leave?”

“Removal of this unit would reduce remaining maintenance capacity below sustainable levels.”

It was an answer to a different question.

He suspected it was the only one the machine could give.

“All right. We’ll come back.”

“Return schedule?”

He thought of the work waiting at Hearth.

The transport capacity.

The distance.

“I won’t give you a date I can’t keep.”

The custodian’s lens moved slightly.

“Statement recorded.”

Isolde joined him.

In her hands, she carried the copied testimony of eighteen people who had reached this place and then continued into the dark.

“Thank you for keeping it,” she said.

For a moment, the machine remained silent.

Then it replied.

“That was our assignment.”

They left the anchorage with nearly every available storage unit filled.

Alexander inspected the cargo manifest.

“Did you leave anything?”

Asha answered too quickly.

“Yes.”

He looked at her.

“A distressing amount,” she admitted.

Aramaeis carried his own case aboard.

Dinraal offered to take it.

His uncle shook his head.

“I have it.”

This time, Dinraal did not insist.

As the cutter pulled away from the moon, the docking lights extinguished behind them.

The anchorage vanished back into the basin’s shadow.

But now they knew where it was.

And what it held.

On the second day of the return journey, Asha called them into the cutter’s small common compartment.

She had condensed the battle records into a sequence Alexander could follow without repeatedly demanding that she use smaller words.

He appreciated this less than she had hoped.

“The important point,” she said, “is that the original team did not try to maintain one enormous field. They assigned separate tasks.”

She pointed.

“One operator held the local reference steady. Another isolated the anchor. The third severed the connection.”

Dinraal watched the silver figures move.

“Could two do it?”

Asha looked at him.

“Possibly. But we have more than two.”

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Isolde watched him with a small, knowing smile.

Aramaeis rested his arms on the table.

“We train as a group.”

Dinraal looked around the compartment.

“Yes,” he said.

Alexander leaned back.

“Good. I was preparing a speech.”

“Was it lengthy?”

“Extremely.”

Asha returned to the display.

“There is one part we need to take seriously. A severed anchor may remain dangerous. The original team withdrew before the collapse.”

Dinraal remembered the wreckage being pulled inward.

“No standing around to see whether it worked.”

“Exactly.”

Isolde folded her arms.

“I’d like that written somewhere he can see it.”

“Both of you,” Alexander said.

She looked offended.

Aramaeis laughed for the first time since entering the archive.

Hearth had changed while they were gone.

Dinraal saw it before the shuttle landed.

More roofs.

A widened path.

The school building, unmistakable now, with a sheltered entrance and something brightly colored beside the door.

He leaned toward the window.

Isolde followed his gaze.

A painted board.

Children had covered it with uneven stars.

She smiled.

When the ramp lowered, Rhiannon stood waiting beside Tiamat and Aurelius.

Dinraal had barely reached the ground before his sister embraced him.

Then she stepped back and looked at Aramaeis.

He lifted the case.

“I brought them.”

Tiamat’s expression changed.

She touched the lid gently.

“All of them?”

“All the records I could recover.”

She nodded, unable for a moment to speak.

Rhiannon hugged Isolde and immediately began examining her face for signs of missed meals.

Alexander passed behind them.

“They ate.”

“Regularly?”

“With supervision.”

“Good.”

Aurelius approached Dinraal.

“Well?”

Dinraal looked past him toward Hearth.

People moved along the paths. Someone waved from the kitchen. Near the school, Nessa was attempting to persuade several children that the returning shuttle could be observed without climbing anything.

“We found a defense,” he said.

Aurelius’s expression sharpened.

“A proven one?”

“Proven once. We need to learn it.”

“And the Questioner?”

“It can be forced back.”

For a moment, Aurelius simply looked at him.

Then he placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Come and tell us.”

The briefing lasted until supper.

Eve interrupted Asha seventeen times.

Asha interrupted Eve at least as often.

Arcturus requested the original battle geometry. Julius asked for manufacturing requirements. Cleopatra began identifying which construction tasks could continue without the people needed for the first assembly.

Gilgamesh studied the three silver figures.

“Training,” he said with satisfaction.

“Precision training,” Eve replied.

His expression became less pleased.

Tiamat watched the footage in silence.

When the darkness withdrew from the stars, she reached for Aramaeis’s hand.

Dinraal noticed.

He kept speaking so she would not have to.

Afterward, they carried the personnel records to a separate room.

Those would take longer.

There were names to read.

Photographs to identify.

Stories that Aramaeis and Tiamat could finally tell together.

Dinraal and Isolde reached their quarters after dark.

The door opened smoothly.

Inside, everything stood where they had left it.

The cups.

The blanket.

Her journal case.

A small pot had appeared on the table.

Two green shoots rose from the soil.

Beside it lay a note in Rhiannon’s handwriting.

Approved by the agricultural team. Do not drown it.

Isolde laughed softly.

Dinraal set down their bags.

She touched one of the leaves with a careful finger.

“Our garden has begun.”

“Under supervision.”

“Probably wise.”

He crossed the room and wrapped his arms around her.

She leaned back against him.

For several moments, neither spoke.

Then, from outside, came the sound of a child calling for the First Weapon.

A familiar weight shifted near the door.

Dinraal looked down.

“You’ve been missed.”

The First Weapon nudged the door insistently.

Isolde opened it.

He slipped outside, and the delighted voices that followed carried down the habitat row.

Dinraal watched through the doorway.

Then he looked toward the distant research shelter, where the lights were still on.

Tomorrow, they would begin learning how to hold the darkness back.

Tonight, Isolde took his hand and drew him inside.

On the table, the two small shoots stood beneath the light.

Dinraal left the unpacking until morning.
