The Last Silver

Chapter 54: Learning to Hold

The first attempt lasted less than a second.

A narrow ribbon of silver light formed between Dinraal’s hands, trembled, and snapped.

The resulting flash turned the sand beneath his boots into glass.

Across the testing ground, Gilgamesh looked delighted.

Eve did not.

“Too much.”

Dinraal lowered his hands.

“I barely did anything.”

“That,” she said, checking her instruments, “is going to become an increasingly unhelpful unit of measurement.”

Isolde turned away.

He could see her shoulders moving.

“You’re laughing.”

“A little.”

“You haven’t tried yet.”

“No. I’m learning from your example.”

The testing ground lay on a barren moon, well away from the inhabited planet and every normal flight route. Asha and Eve had selected a broad crater with stable ground, no useful mineral deposits, and nothing nearby that anyone would particularly miss.

Even Gilgamesh had found their explanation discouraging.

Now a half-circle of silver-armored figures stood around three low markers while instruments hovered overhead.

Aurelius studied the glass at Dinraal’s feet.

“Perhaps start smaller.”

Dinraal looked at the thread of light still curled around his wrist.

“I was trying.”

Aramaeis stepped beside him.

“Then stop trying to make it strong.”

He lifted one hand.

A pale line formed above his palm.

It bent, wavered, and settled into a small, steady curve.

“Give it something precise to do.”

By the sixth attempt, Dinraal had stopped melting the ground.

By the ninth, he understood how much he had been relying on force.

His armor responded readily to a threat. He could imagine a barrier and feel it rise. He could reach for a weapon and find its shape gathering along his arm before he finished the thought.

This was different.

Asha had asked him to hold the distance between two floating markers unchanged while she moved the field around them.

The distance was the width of his hand.

It might as well have been a star system.

Every instinct told him to seize the markers.

Every time he did, Eve stopped the exercise.

“You’re restraining the instruments again.”

“They stay in place.”

“The instruments do. The measurement doesn’t.”

He let his hands fall.

Isolde approached and studied the two small lights.

“May I?”

Dinraal stepped aside.

She raised her fingers.

The silver at her wrist loosened into fine threads, reaching toward the markers without touching them.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then one thread curved back toward the other.

The lights steadied.

Asha’s voice sharpened.

“Hold that.”

Isolde’s brow furrowed.

“I am.”

“Seven seconds,” Eve said.

Dinraal scarcely breathed.

“Eleven.”

The thread flickered.

Isolde closed her hand.

The markers drifted apart.

She exhaled.

“Well?”

Eve looked up from her display.

“Fourteen seconds.”

Dinraal stared at his wife.

She glanced at the patch of glass beside his boots.

“I believe I’ve set a rather demanding standard.”

He laughed.

Then he leaned forward and touched his helmet gently against hers.

“Show me.”

They rotated through the exercises.

No one was allowed to become indispensable to a single task.

Arcturus held the reference field with the patience he brought to fleet maneuvers. Cleopatra proved unexpectedly adept at enclosing a moving target without allowing her field to touch it.

Gilgamesh severed the first simulated connection so thoroughly that Asha stared at the empty space where the target had been.

“Was that successful?” he asked.

“The connection is gone.”

He folded his arms.

“Excellent.”

“So is the device producing it.”

A pause.

“Less excellent.”

Johanna managed the same exercise three attempts later.

The target remained intact.

Gilgamesh watched her lower her hand.

“How?”

She considered.

“I imagined removing a splinter.”

He looked at his armored fingers.

“That is an offensively small image.”

“It worked.”

Rhiannon laughed over the shared channel.

By the time they returned to the shuttle, everyone had succeeded at something.

Everyone had failed at considerably more.

Dinraal found this reassuring.

They could learn.

The first reference assembly took eight days to build.

It would have taken longer without the industrial workshops aboard the Imperial vessels.

Even so, the archive’s plans demanded components that none of the engineers had manufactured before. Several had to be redesigned around available materials.

Asha objected to the first alteration.

The chief machinist invited her to produce the original alloy.

She reconsidered.

The completed assembly rested inside a cargo frame, three incomplete rings arranged around a central chamber. It was shorter than Dinraal and far less impressive than he had expected.

A collection of cables emerged from one side.

One panel had been fitted backward, removed, and fitted correctly.

The machinist had left a small mark on it to ensure nobody forgot.

Dinraal walked around the structure.

“This could help protect the planet?”

“One of these can help us test the principle,” Eve said. “Protecting the planet will require a larger arrangement.”

“How many?”

“We’re working on that.”

He nodded.

Then he noticed the machinist rubbing his wrist.

“How long have you been awake?”

The man glanced at Asha.

Asha glanced at Eve.

Eve looked suddenly interested in a cooling unit.

Dinraal folded his arms.

“All of you?”

“We finished,” Asha said.

“That wasn’t the question.”

Isolde entered carrying the updated trial schedule.

She took in the room with a single look.

“Oh, good. You’ve reached the part where he notices everyone else is tired.”

Dinraal turned toward her.

“I slept.”

“Yes. Because I took your tablet.”

The machinist smiled.

Dinraal pointed at the door.

“Go and eat.”

This time, nobody argued.

While the assembly was being built, Hearth acquired its first library.

Nessa had asked for a cabinet.

Asha sent her enough copied material to fill several buildings.

The compromise involved six reading terminals, a small printer, and a long table that Halen built from imported boards.

Dinraal arrived while the children were helping arrange the room.

One of them carried a sign almost as large as she was.

He caught the lower edge before it struck the floor.

“Where?”

“Above the door.”

He held it in place while Nessa fastened it.

The letters were uneven.

HEARTH SCHOOL AND LIBRARY.

Beneath them, in smaller writing, someone had added:

Please bring things back.

Dinraal smiled.

“A sensible rule.”

“It applies to adults too,” Nessa said.

From inside, Asha looked up.

“I returned the geography volume.”

“After borrowing the only printed copy.”

“I was checking it.”

“For three days.”

Isolde stood beside a terminal, guiding a little boy through the catalog.

He pointed at an illustration of a creature with six limbs and an enormous crest.

“Do we have those here?”

“We haven’t found any.”

“Could we?”

“That seems like a question for the survey team.”

He considered this seriously.

“Can I join?”

“When you’re older.”

“How much older?”

Dinraal left them negotiating.

Near the back of the room, he found Aramaeis installing a separate directory.

The screen displayed a list of names.

Veyra’s photograph appeared beside the first entry.

Dinraal stood beside him.

“You’re putting them here?”

“Copies of the public records. The families can decide what else they want shared, if we find them.”

His uncle adjusted the display.

“I spent a long time being afraid that remembering would mean living there again.”

Dinraal looked at the laughing woman in the photograph.

“And now?”

Aramaeis sat back.

“Now I want someone to know she laughed.”

Across the room, a child laughed loudly enough to draw Nessa’s attention.

Neither man spoke for a while.

The trial began two mornings later.

The assembly stood on the same barren moon where they had practiced.

This time, no one joked while Asha checked the final connections.

A small generator rested fifty paces away. It could create a controlled spatial distortion, weak enough to shut down through an ordinary mechanical breaker.

Its purpose was to give the assembly something to resist.

There was no Ashen material present.

No copied enemy signal.

Dinraal had insisted on hearing both facts twice.

Arcturus supervised from the observation shuttle. Johanna waited with the reserve team beyond the test boundary.

Isolde stood at the assembly.

Aramaeis waited near the distortion generator.

Dinraal occupied the third position.

Three tasks.

Hold the reference.

Isolate the source.

Sever the connection.

Eve’s voice entered their helmets.

“Low-power sequence only. We are measuring stability.”

“Understood,” Isolde said.

Dinraal flexed his fingers.

Across the sand, he could see the faint glow of her bracelets spreading beneath her armor.

Asha began the countdown.

At first, Dinraal felt nothing.

Then the generator bent the light around it.

The far rim of the crater appeared slightly displaced, as though seen through a flaw in glass.

“Distortion established,” Asha said.

Isolde lifted her hands.

Silver flowed into the assembly’s waiting channels.

The rings brightened.

Dinraal felt a strange certainty settle over him.

The ground beneath his boots had always been solid, but now his awareness of it sharpened. The generator stood exactly where he saw it. The distance to Isolde stopped carrying the faint, nauseating uncertainty that had crept into it a moment before.

“Reference stable,” Eve said.

Aramaeis moved.

His field closed around the generator in a pale shell.

Dinraal could see the connection now.

A thin distortion crossed the shell’s boundary, sustained by the equipment.

He raised his hand.

Not a blade.

Not a cannon.

A fine edge, almost too small to see.

“Wait,” Asha said.

He held.

Her instruments adjusted.

Then—

“Proceed.”

Dinraal drew the edge through the distortion.

It separated.

The crater beyond the generator returned to its proper shape.

For one glorious instant, everything worked.

Then a ring inside the assembly shifted.

A warning flashed red across Dinraal’s vision.

Isolde gasped.

The field pulled sideways.

Dinraal moved before he thought.

Power surged through his arm.

He could hold it.

He could take the strain.

“Do not feed it,” Eve snapped.

He stopped.

The effort hurt more than continuing would have.

Across the crater, Isolde’s boots slid over the sand.

“Inner ring is binding,” she said, her voice tight. “I’m keeping the reference, but it’s dragging the assembly.”

Aramaeis’s field remained closed around the generator.

“Source contained.”

“Asha,” Arcturus said.

“Emergency release is responding. Three seconds.”

Dinraal stared at Isolde.

Three seconds was a long time.

He could feel her working through the silver they shared, the precision of it, the strain.

His instinct was still to pour everything he had toward her.

Instead, he heard her voice.

“Hold your position.”

He did.

A bolt released.

One of the assembly’s rings sprang outward.

The light collapsed into its central chamber.

Isolde dropped to one knee.

The generator went dark.

Silence filled the channel.

Then Johanna said, “Everyone answer.”

“Here,” Isolde replied.

Dinraal exhaled so hard his chest ached.

“Here.”

Aramaeis lowered his hands.

“Unhurt.”

Asha began reading the shutdown indicators aloud.

Dinraal was already walking.

This time, nobody told him to stay where he was.

Isolde rose before he reached her.

He stopped close enough to see her face as her helmet withdrew.

“You listened,” she said.

He laughed once, without humor.

“It was unpleasant.”

“I noticed.”

“Are you hurt?”

“Shaken. Nothing broken.”

He looked at the damaged ring.

A section of its support had twisted.

Johanna reached them and took Isolde’s wrist before either could object.

Dinraal let her work.

Asha knelt beside the assembly.

For several moments, she said nothing.

Then the machinist’s voice came through the shuttle channel.

“Show me the lower bearing.”

She moved the camera.

A long pause followed.

“That’s mine,” he said.

Asha looked up.

“The substitute material?”

“Yes.”

Dinraal closed his eyes briefly.

They had all been thinking about the vast thing beyond the stars.

The first failure had come from a bearing.

The review lasted longer than the trial.

Nobody attempted to call it a success without qualification.

Nobody dismissed what had worked, either.

The field had resisted the controlled distortion.

Aramaeis had isolated the source.

Dinraal had severed its connection.

The assembly had then failed while releasing the remaining load.

They had followed the shutdown procedure, and everyone had walked away.

Eve placed the results beside the archive’s original figures.

“We repair the support, change the release sequence, and test again.”

Dinraal stood near the back of the room.

“With smaller load increments.”

“Yes.”

“And someone independent checks the replacement.”

The machinist nodded before anyone else could answer.

“Agreed.”

Isolde watched Dinraal while Asha adjusted the schedule.

He looked tired.

More than tired.

After the meeting, she caught his hand before he could follow Eve.

“Walk with me.”

They took the path toward the river.

For a while, the only sound was their boots on the packed ground.

Dinraal spoke first.

“I nearly made it worse.”

“But you stopped.”

“Because Eve shouted.”

“And because you listened afterward.”

He looked toward the water.

“I knew you were in trouble.”

“Yes.”

“I could feel it.”

Isolde slowed.

“Dinraal.”

He faced her.

“When I told you to hold your position, I needed you to do that. You did.”

He searched her face.

She took both his hands.

“I need to be able to trust you with that too.”

The words settled slowly.

He had thought about trusting other people to protect him.

He had thought less about trusting them while every instinct demanded that he intervene.

“I’m learning,” he said.

“I know.”

She kissed him, briefly and firmly.

Then she started walking again, keeping his hand.

“Also, Johanna said I’m to eat and rest, and Rhiannon knows.”

“That sounds serious.”

“It is.”

They read Veyra’s account in the common hall that evening.

It had not been planned as a large gathering.

Aramaeis had asked for a room where anyone interested could hear the corrected records.

By the time he stood, every bench was occupied.

Dinraal sat beside Isolde near the rear.

Tiamat stood with Aramaeis.

On the screen behind them, Veyra laughed forever beside the transport hatch.

“She was an engineer,” Aramaeis began. “She disliked being introduced by rank.”

A few people smiled.

“She believed most emergencies began with someone ignoring maintenance.”

Dinraal glanced toward the machinist.

The man sat with his hands clasped tightly.

Aramaeis told them about Veyra’s work.

Then about the ship.

Then he read the names of the people who had survived because she stayed.

It took several minutes.

When he finished, Tiamat stepped closer to the screen.

“She also sang,” she said.

Aramaeis turned toward her.

“Badly.”

His expression broke into a startled smile.

“Terribly.”

“She knew.”

“She did.”

For a moment, grief and amusement crossed his face together.

Dinraal felt Isolde’s fingers curl around his.

They stayed until the last name had been read.

The second trial took place four days later.

The new bearing held.

So did Isolde.

So did the reference when Aurelius replaced her for the next sequence.

By the end of the afternoon, they had completed three low-power cycles and shut the assembly down cleanly each time.

The team remained quiet for several seconds after the final reading.

Then Asha sat down directly in the dust.

Eve looked at her.

“What are you doing?”

“Enjoying a result.”

“That can be done standing.”

“I’ve chosen this.”

Dinraal laughed.

Around them, silver armor began withdrawing from relieved faces.

Aramaeis rested a hand on the assembly’s outer ring.

“Again tomorrow?”

Eve shook her head.

“Inspection tomorrow. More trials after that.”

For once, nobody complained.

The message from the Imperial colony arrived while they were still unloading the shuttle.

A courier captain delivered it in person to Aurelius.

Dinraal saw the older man’s expression change.

He put down the equipment case.

“What happened?”

Aurelius read to the end before answering.

“One of the outer colonies has requested immediate evacuation.”

“How many?”

“Just over two thousand.”

Isolde came to stand beside them.

“Ashen?”

“They’ve lost two survey craft. Something has been appearing near their relay station.”

Dinraal felt the afternoon’s relief drain away.

Arcturus was already approaching with the captain.

“Any direct attack?”

“Not yet,” the captain said. “But their navigation systems began disagreeing three days ago.”

Aurelius turned the message so they could see the final line.

Dinraal recognized its significance before he finished reading.

The colony had received an acknowledgment to a distress call.

Six minutes before they sent it.

Around them, Hearth continued its evening work.

A cart rattled toward the kitchen.

Children shouted near the school.

From the open shuttle hatch, Asha called for help moving the reference assembly.

Dinraal looked at the machine.

Then at his uncle.

Aramaeis had already read the message over Aurelius’s shoulder.

“We’re not ready to fight it,” he said.

“No,” Dinraal replied.

He turned toward Arcturus.

“But we can start getting those people out.”
