The Last Silver

The first reply arrived while Dinraal was helping install a window.

Beren stood inside the unfinished house, guiding the frame into place.

“A little higher.”

Dinraal lifted.

“Too much.”

He lowered it.

“Hold.”

His communicator sounded.

Beren looked at his wrist.

“If that is someone asking you to move a mountain, they can wait until this is secured.”

Dinraal glanced at the message.

“Arcturus.”

“Does he need a mountain?”

“The first courier is back.”

Beren’s expression changed.

He fastened the nearest bracket, checked it, and stepped away.

“Go.”

Dinraal waited until the frame supported its own weight.

Then he went.

The colony was called Edris.

Its administrator had received the warning before connecting the delivered reference unit.

The device remained in its shipping cradle, inside a sealed freight compartment.

No one had vanished.

No clocks disagreed.

No voice had answered a call that had not yet been made.

Dinraal read the report standing beside Arcturus’s desk.

He reached the end and went back to the beginning.

Aurelius watched him.

“They found it in time.”

Dinraal nodded.

He had imagined several possible replies.

Silence.

Disbelief.

Another evacuation request.

He had not realized how badly he needed this one.

Isolde entered with Asha.

“What happened?”

He handed her the report.

She read it, then closed her eyes briefly.

Asha leaned over her shoulder.

“They’ve disconnected the compartment from the station network?”

“Physically,” Arcturus said. “Their engineers confirmed it.”

“Good.”

“The maintenance vessel is still there.”

Everyone looked up.

Arcturus brought its registry onto the display.

The same ship that had delivered the unit to Halden’s Reach.

“The administrator suspended its departure clearance,” he said. “The captain is demanding an explanation.”

“Do they know what they carried?” Isolde asked.

“Edris doesn’t know.”

Dinraal stared at the vessel’s image.

A work ship.

Scorched thruster housings. An external cargo rack. Mismatched panels around the forward hatch.

Ordinary.

Again.

“Then we find out.”

They held the meeting aboard the flagship.

Aurelius wanted the records from the maintenance vessel.

Asha wanted the unopened unit.

Arcturus wanted both to remain well away from inhabited docks.

Alexander wanted to know whether the maintenance captain would cooperate before anyone planned around it.

“We have evidence his vessel delivered dangerous equipment,” he said. “That does not tell us what he knew.”

“No,” Dinraal agreed.

Asha enlarged the image of the shipping cradle.

“If we can examine a unit before it activates, we may learn what the archive couldn’t tell us.”

“How to destroy them?” Gilgamesh asked.

“How to recognize them before we have to.”

He considered that.

“Also useful.”

The fourth destination on the vessel’s schedule had not yet received a delivery.

Arcturus had already sent that colony a warning.

The other replies remained days away.

Dinraal looked at the map.

“We send a technical team to Edris. Alexander commands. Isolde and I go with them.”

Aurelius’s gaze shifted toward the defense-station roster.

“Tiamat and I can cover your shifts.”

“Aramaeis should come,” Asha said. “He may recognize parts of the construction.”

His uncle nodded.

Johanna folded her arms.

“Then one of the medical team comes too. If there are people aboard that ship who need help, you should have someone qualified to decide what kind.”

Alexander entered the addition.

Outside the forward windows, a transport crossed the arrival lane.

Its pilot was using the two linked reference stations they had built.

Dinraal watched it pass from one stable region to the next.

Then he turned back to the table.

Rhiannon caught them packing that evening.

She stood in the doorway for several seconds.

“You were just getting the windows.”

“The windows will continue without us,” Isolde said.

“That is not my complaint.”

Dinraal closed his bag.

Rhiannon’s expression softened as she looked at them.

“You have people here who can do difficult things.”

“We know,” he said.

“Do you?”

He took a moment before answering.

“The unit may be something our silver can detect before the instruments do. We felt a response in the archive. Aramaeis thinks that matters.”

Rhiannon glanced toward Isolde.

She nodded.

“We’re going with a ship and a team. We’re not opening it ourselves.”

“Good.”

Rhiannon placed a wrapped parcel on the bed.

“Food.”

“We’ll be aboard a vessel with a kitchen,” Dinraal said.

“I have eaten ship food.”

Then she hugged Isolde.

Dinraal received an embrace of his own, tighter than he expected.

When she stepped back, she touched his cheek.

“Come back while the paint is still drying.”

He smiled.

“We’ll try.”

Edris had placed the maintenance vessel in a distant holding orbit by the time they arrived.

The unopened device had been moved separately by a remote tug.

The two objects hung far apart on the tactical display.

Alexander studied them.

“Any resistance?”

“Verbal,” the local patrol commander replied.

“How much?”

“Considerable.”

“Any attempt to leave?”

“No.”

“That’s encouraging.”

The maintenance captain agreed to meet aboard Alexander’s escort after receiving a copy of the Halden’s Reach delivery record.

His name was Teren Oss.

He was broad-shouldered, grey at the temples, and angry enough to keep both hands flat on the meeting table.

“Seven days,” he said.

Dinraal sat opposite him.

“Since the inspection?”

“Since my crew last had proper shore leave. We finally reach a station that has room for us, and suddenly we’re confined to the ship because of cargo we didn’t manufacture.”

Alexander placed a still image from the recovered survey recorder on the table.

“Did you install this at Halden’s Reach?”

Teren looked down.

“Yes.”

“Did you inspect the interior?”

“Sealed component. Certified replacement. Opening it voids the service authorization.”

“Who issued that authorization?”

The captain gave him the depot’s name.

It matched their records.

Dinraal brought up the next image.

The same object attached beneath the relay.

Then the distortion around it.

Teren’s hands stopped moving.

“What is that?”

“We believe it helped something reach the colony,” Dinraal said.

The captain stared at him.

“Halden’s Reach?”

“We evacuated the people we could find.”

Teren looked back at the photograph.

“There was an engineer,” he said slowly. “Bandage on her hand. She helped us fit the lower mount.”

“Enna.”

“Yes.”

“She’s alive.”

The captain swallowed.

For the first time since entering, he seemed to notice the water in front of him.

He drank.

Then he put the cup down carefully.

“What do you need?”

They copied the maintenance records before questioning the crew.

The records told a simple story.

A small ship had taken a contract it badly needed.

The regional depot provided the equipment, inspection certificates, installation guides, and route schedule.

Payment followed each confirmed installation.

There were bonuses for early completion.

Teren had accepted.

So had the people working for him.

None of that proved innocence.

But the details mattered.

His crew had complained about the weight of the units. One technician had filed an objection because the sealed housings made field repairs impossible. Another had requested replacement straps after a cradle shifted during transit.

People trying to complete a job.

Asha studied the shipping records while Isolde spoke with the installation crew.

Dinraal joined her halfway through an interview with a young technician named Sel.

He sat rigidly, his eyes fixed on the tabletop.

“They sent someone with the first shipment,” he said.

“A depot representative?” Isolde asked.

“Yes.”

“Name?”

“Voss. That’s what the captain called him.”

Dinraal sat beside her.

“Did he install the equipment?”

“He watched. He said the calibration was delicate.”

Sel rubbed at a mark on the table.

“He made us replace the camera above the cargo rack.”

“Why?”

“Said it interfered with the unit.”

Isolde glanced at Dinraal.

“What happened to the old camera?”

Sel finally looked up.

“We kept it. We keep everything.”

The removed camera contained nineteen minutes of footage the depot representative had apparently overlooked.

Most showed an empty cargo compartment.

Then Voss entered.

A thin man in a work coat.

He checked the hatch.

Waited.

Then placed his bare hand against the sealed reference unit.

The housing opened beneath his fingers.

No tool.

No release sequence.

Its curved inner components moved toward him.

Dinraal felt the silver tighten against his wrist.

On the recording, Voss leaned close to the open device.

His lips moved.

There was no sound.

Asha enlarged the image.

For a moment, something pale passed beneath the skin of his throat.

Then the compartment hatch began opening.

The device closed.

Voss turned toward the arriving crew member.

He smiled.

The footage ended when someone disconnected the camera.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Aramaeis said, “Where did he leave the vessel?”

Alexander checked the travel log.

“At the depot. After Halden’s Reach.”

Dinraal stared at the frozen face.

“Human?”

Asha’s answer came slowly.

“Human enough to pass among the crew.”

The unopened device waited inside a remote inspection frame.

Dinraal, Isolde, and Aramaeis watched from outside the work area in sealed armor.

Asha remained aboard the escort, operating the instruments with Edris’s engineers.

They had brought no full reference station.

Instead, the three of them established a small shared field around the inspection frame.

Dinraal held one side.

Isolde held the other.

Aramaeis controlled the boundary nearest the device.

A mechanical tool began opening the outer shipping cover.

Nothing happened.

Then the inner housing emerged.

Dinraal could feel it.

A faint pressure against his teeth.

Something incomplete waiting to be completed.

“Stop,” he said.

The tool froze.

Asha’s voice entered the channel.

“What changed?”

“It’s responding.”

“Power readings remain at zero.”

Isolde moved her fingers slightly.

A thin line of silver appeared along her palm.

“Not to the tool.”

The pressure sharpened.

The object’s curved protrusions shifted inside the cradle.

Aramaeis tightened the field around it.

“It recognizes the boundary.”

Asha was silent for half a second.

“Withdraw the tool. Maintain isolation.”

The mechanical arm began moving backward.

The device unfolded.

A narrow black seam opened above the cradle.

Dinraal’s view of the far inspection rail doubled.

He felt the familiar urge to crush everything inside the frame.

He held his position instead.

“Reference steady,” Isolde said.

Her voice was clear.

Close.

Aramaeis extended the boundary until it enclosed the device without touching the seam.

“Contained.”

The words were the same ones they had practiced.

This time, there was no generator.

No technician waiting beside a breaker.

The black seam lengthened.

Asha spoke quickly.

“Recording. No external transmission detected.”

The device pressed against Aramaeis’s field.

He bent one knee, bracing against nothing Dinraal could see.

“It’s building load.”

Dinraal found the connection.

It looked almost trivial.

A pale thread disappearing through the seam, narrower than a finger.

He could feel depth inside it that made his stomach turn.

“Isolde?”

“Holding.”

“Uncle?”

“Cut it.”

Dinraal formed the fine edge.

He moved once.

The thread parted.

The device convulsed.

“Withdraw,” Alexander ordered.

Aramaeis released the containment outward.

The three of them moved together.

The inspection frame folded in at its center with a flash of distorted light.

Then it was over.

Fragments drifted through the space where the device had been.

The stars beyond them remained steady.

Dinraal stopped only when Isolde caught his arm.

“Answer,” she said.

He blinked.

Alexander was calling their names.

“Here.”

Aramaeis answered a moment later.

So did Isolde.

Dinraal looked back.

Asha’s instruments were still recording.

They had done it.

The celebration consisted of sitting down.

All three of them reached the escort’s bay, removed their helmets, and remained where they were until Johanna’s medic finished checking them.

Dinraal’s hands shook.

Isolde’s did too.

Aramaeis rested his head against the bulkhead.

Asha arrived with her tablet clutched to her chest.

For once, she did not begin with a question.

She crouched in front of them.

“The connection collapsed completely.”

Dinraal looked at her.

“Completely?”

“Within everything we could measure.”

“The device?”

“Destroyed.”

“Anything beyond it?”

“We saw no continuing disturbance.”

He let out a breath.

Isolde leaned against his shoulder.

Asha looked down at her tablet.

Then back at them.

“You followed the sequence.”

Dinraal laughed weakly.

“An astonishing development.”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

Teren watched the footage before they released his ship from the immediate holding order.

He stood through the entire recording.

When it ended, he asked for the names of the nine missing survey crew members.

Dinraal studied him.

“Why?”

“Because I took the payment.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I know that.”

The captain rubbed both hands over his face.

“I still took it.”

Dinraal understood more of that than he wanted to.

“We need your help finding the person who did.”

Teren lowered his hands.

“You’ll have every route record. Every purchase. Every conversation my crew remembers.”

Alexander nodded.

“And your vessel remains here for a complete inspection.”

“It can remain as long as it needs.”

The captain looked toward the dark display.

“Tell Enna I remember her.”

Dinraal nodded.

“I will.”

The next courier reached Edris as they prepared to leave.

It carried replies from two of the other colonies.

One had found its installed unit and removed the physical connections before any disturbance developed.

The other had discovered that the delivery crate was empty.

The device listed inside had never been installed.

For several minutes, nobody knew whether that was good news.

Then Asha read the shipping note beneath the inventory discrepancy.

RETURNED TO REGIONAL DEPOT FOR RECALIBRATION.

Arcturus’s accompanying message was brief.

The Imperial colony had dispatched an inspection team to the depot.

The team had reached its perimeter.

They were receiving normal automated traffic instructions.

But no one inside would answer a direct voice call.

Dinraal looked toward the map.

The depot sat at the center of routes connecting dozens of inhabited places.

A place ships trusted because they had always trusted it.

Alexander began changing their departure preparations.

“We return to Hearth,” he said. “Deliver the records. Plan the next move with the others.”

Dinraal stared at the depot’s marker.

Then he nodded.

They had interrupted one connection.

They would need far more than three people and a damaged inspection frame to deal with whatever was waiting there.

Hearth’s river shone beneath the evening light when they returned.

Their house had a roof.

Dinraal noticed it from the shuttle and caught Isolde’s hand before she saw.

She followed his gaze.

For a moment, the depot, the pale thing beneath Voss’s skin, and the collapsing frame all seemed very far away.

Beren waited at the landing field with a list of decisions.

He handed it to Isolde.

“Door fittings. Kitchen shelves. The garden gate.”

Dinraal looked at him.

“We’ve just landed.”

“Yes. I saw.”

Behind Beren, Rhiannon stood with Aurelius.

Aurelius took one look at their faces.

“Did it work?”

Dinraal nodded.

“We severed one.”

The older man closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, he placed a hand on Dinraal’s shoulder.

“Then come and tell us how.”

They walked toward the common hall together.

Above the town, the first three reference stations held their watch.

The fourth was still being assembled.

Tomorrow, the workshops would be busy again.
