Chapter 58: What the Recorder Kept

Enna found the repair entry just before breakfast.

She arrived at the research shelter carrying a cup, a tablet, and the expression of someone who had stopped noticing either.

“The recorder worked.”

Eve looked up.

“You’ve confirmed it?”

“The fault was in the transmission interface. It couldn’t send its contents to the ship’s main computer. The internal storage was intact.”

Asha pushed her chair back.

“How far back?”

“Forty-three days before they removed it.”

Dinraal, summoned from the kitchen halfway through a piece of bread, looked toward the map of Halden’s Reach.

The survey crews had disappeared after the recorder was removed.

It would not tell them what happened at the end.

But it might show them where everything began.

Enna set down the tablet.

“Every flight. Instrument logs. Cabin audio.”

“Then we have something worth retrieving,” Eve said.

Dinraal nodded.

His hand tightened around the bread until Isolde quietly took it from him.

Alexander took command of the recovery vessel.

He chose a small courier, three specialists, and a cargo bay fitted to receive the returning drone without opening it to the rest of the ship.

Dinraal offered to accompany them.

Alexander looked at him across the briefing table.

“What would you do?”

“If something went wrong—”

“Would you stay aboard while we abandoned the drone?”

Dinraal stopped.

Alexander waited.

Isolde sat beside him without answering on his behalf.

Finally, Dinraal let out a slow breath.

“I’d find that difficult.”

“So would I,” Alexander said. “That’s why we decided what to do before going.”

He turned the route display toward the others.

“The courier remains outside the relay corridor. The drone travels independently after launch. It has a fixed recovery window and no reason to approach anything except the workshop.”

Asha checked the return calculations.

“If its measurements stop agreeing, it abandons the task.”

“And we leave if our own instruments show the same problem,” Alexander added.

Dinraal looked at the little marker representing the drone.

An unmanned machine.

A box in an empty building.

He had spent much of his life learning to act before hesitation cost someone their life.

Now people were asking him to remain home and let a machine do something dangerous.

“All right,” he said.

Alexander nodded once.

“Good. You can help finish the third station.”

The courier departed that afternoon.

Dinraal watched from the orbital construction platform until its drive flare disappeared.

Then Enna put a fastening tool into his hand.

“This one needs securing.”

He looked at the open panel beside her.

“How tight?”

She pointed toward a number on the tool.

“Until that says so.”

“I can feel—”

“Use the tool.”

He did.

Working helped.

The station had arrived in pieces, and there was no room for distraction while maneuvering heavy equipment through unfinished passageways.

Isolde worked outside with Tiamat, guiding a cooling assembly into its mounts.

Aurelius remained at the first station. Cleopatra held the second.

Below them, the planet turned.

Cloud covered Hearth.

Dinraal checked the courier’s departure time once.

Then he returned to the panel.

Their house acquired a foundation while they waited.

Beren found Dinraal standing at its edge the following morning.

“Don’t walk on it.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“You were leaning forward.”

“I was looking.”

“Look from there.”

Isolde stood several paces away, studying the stakes that marked the garden.

The house seemed smaller without walls.

Dinraal could see every room at once.

The kitchen.

Their bedroom.

The spare room.

A place where the table would stand.

He stepped carefully around the fresh work and joined Isolde.

“Does it look right?”

She nodded.

“Come here.”

He moved beside her.

She pointed toward the river.

Through the gap between two future houses, they would see the water from their kitchen window.

Beyond it, the land rose toward a line of dark trees.

“I want the sink there,” she said.

“So you can watch the river while I wash dishes?”

“That was part of the reasoning.”

He smiled.

Beren, behind them, made a thoughtful sound.

“A practical woman.”

Dinraal looked over his shoulder.

“You’re taking sides before the walls are up?”

“Efficient, isn’t it?”

The waiting lasted four days.

Hearth did not pause for it.

A shipment from the Imperial colony brought medical supplies, two additional fabrication crews, and letters from families who wanted to relocate before their own skies began changing.

The council spent a long evening working through them.

Some colonies could send their own ships.

Others would require help.

A few asked whether Hearth expected payment.

Mara read one such letter twice before setting it down.

“What do we tell them?”

“That we need to know what they can bring,” Julius said. “People, equipment, seed stocks, skills. We have to plan.”

“And if they can bring very little?”

Dinraal looked around the table.

Halen’s hands were still stained from the foundation work.

Nessa had fallen asleep over a teaching schedule that morning.

Meret’s list of required water equipment had grown longer despite everything they had built.

“Then we plan for that too,” he said.

Cleopatra nodded.

“But we give them an honest arrival date. We cannot put families on wet ground and call it shelter.”

They began answering the letters.

By the time the meeting ended, Dinraal had stopped thinking of Hearth as a single town they were trying to finish.

There would always be another row of houses.

Another workshop.

Another ship approaching with people aboard who had heard there was room.

Lysa found him outside the common hall the next day.

He knew from her expression that she had heard something.

“Mara says you sent a machine back.”

Dinraal nodded.

“For a recorder.”

“Yes.”

She folded her arms tightly.

“Does it have his voice?”

“It may.”

“From before?”

“From before the ship disappeared.”

For a moment, her face changed in a way he could not read.

Hope.

Pain.

Both.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“We didn’t know whether the recorder contained anything useful. We still don’t know whether we can recover it.”

Lysa looked toward the landing field.

“I know you’re trying not to hurt us.”

He waited.

“But waiting without knowing what anyone is doing hurts too.”

Dinraal lowered his gaze briefly.

“You’re right.”

She seemed surprised by the answer.

“When the courier returns,” he said, “we’ll tell you. Even if it brings nothing.”

“And if it has his voice?”

He met her eyes.

“We’ll ask you before we play it in front of anyone.”

Lysa nodded.

Then she walked away.

Dinraal remained where he was until Isolde emerged from the hall.

He told her what Lysa had said.

Isolde listened.

Then she reached for his hand.

“We should tell the other families too.”

The courier returned near the end of the sixth day.

It did not come directly to Hearth.

Alexander held it at the outer inspection point while a separate crew examined the drone and its sealed cargo.

Dinraal arrived aboard a shuttle with Isolde, Asha, and Enna.

They found Alexander waiting behind the observation glass.

A scorched drone rested in the bay beyond him.

One of its arms was missing.

Dinraal stopped.

“What happened?”

“An exterior support fell while it was leaving the workshop.”

“Because of the distortion?”

“Because the building had taken damage.”

Alexander handed Asha a storage unit.

“The flight logs are here. The recorder is still sealed.”

Dinraal looked back at the drone.

“It got it?”

Alexander’s tired expression softened.

“Yes.”

They watched the recovery footage while the inspection continued.

The drone had descended through a cloudless sky.

Halden’s Reach appeared beneath it.

Dinraal recognized the landing field immediately.

The terminal.

The road where the evacuees had stood.

From above, the colony looked almost unchanged.

Then the camera turned toward the relay’s position.

The horizon blurred at one edge of the image.

Asha stopped the recording.

“The drone approached from the opposite hemisphere,” she said, reading the instrument log. “It never entered the stronger disturbance.”

Alexander nodded.

“Low altitude for the final approach. Passive navigation.”

The footage resumed.

Dust lay against the workshop’s service hatch.

A narrow tool cut through its lock.

Inside, shelves stood at odd angles. A lamp flickered above an empty workbench, drawing from some remaining reserve supply.

Enna leaned closer.

“Second cabinet.”

The drone had found it.

Its arm pulled open a drawer and lifted a rectangular unit wrapped in a maintenance cover.

For a moment, the label filled the screen.

Recorder serial number.

Survey vessel assignment.

Enna’s own initials beneath the repair date.

“That’s it,” she whispered.

The drone sealed the unit inside its cargo compartment.

As it withdrew, something struck the roof.

The image shook.

A support collapsed across the hatch, tearing away the manipulator arm.

The machine struggled.

Then its remaining thrusters carried it clear.

The last surface image showed the workshop receding behind it.

No people came to the door.

No one called after it.

Dinraal was grateful for that.

He was not certain he could have endured otherwise.

The recorder opened cleanly.

Its internal clock had stopped when Enna disconnected it weeks before the evacuation.

The stored files matched the repair logs.

Asha made a copy.

Eve, waiting aboard the inspection vessel, made another and checked them against one another.

Only then did they begin reading.

The first flight contained weather observations and an argument about an improperly secured meal container.

The second ended with a request for a new filter.

The third carried Lysa’s husband’s voice.

His name was Davren.

He was complaining about the patched elbow of his jacket.

Dinraal looked away from the screen.

Isolde touched his arm.

“Save that separately.”

Eve nodded.

The room stayed quiet while she did.

They found the contact on the eleventh flight.

At first, it was nothing more than a change in the survey route.

A weak signal had appeared beyond one of the outer moons.

The crew had received instructions to investigate it.

Enna checked the authorization.

“That came through the relay.”

Arcturus, joining them from the command ship, leaned forward.

“Can we identify who sent it?”

“The header claims colony survey control,” Eve said.

Mara had supplied the surviving dispatch records.

There was no matching instruction in them.

Dinraal felt the room grow colder.

The survey vessel had followed the order.

Its cameras showed a dark object turning slowly above the moon.

Small.

Artificial.

A narrow central body surrounded by curved protrusions.

It looked nothing like the enormous absence they had fled.

Asha paused the image.

Then she opened the old battle archive.

The damaged relay stations appeared beside it.

She enlarged a structure attached to one station’s transmission array.

The shapes were not identical.

The arrangement was.

“A seed anchor,” she said.

Aramaeis, listening remotely from Hearth, spoke quietly.

“They placed it.”

“Who?” Dinraal asked.

“We don’t know yet.”

The recording continued.

A crew member suggested recovering the object.

Davren refused.

“Unknown hardware stays unknown until the quarantine team has it.”

Dinraal sat straighter.

The survey ship had not brought it aboard.

Instead, they recorded its position and returned to the colony.

Two days later, according to the recorder, they inspected the relay station.

The same object was attached beneath its lower framework.

Someone had moved it.

Enna brought up the station’s maintenance inventory.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she searched.

Then she stopped.

“Oh.”

Dinraal looked at her.

She turned the screen.

A delivery entry.

An automatic navigation reference unit.

Dispatched by a regional Imperial service depot.

Installed by a contracted maintenance vessel.

The attached image showed the object in a transport cradle.

Clean.

Harmless-looking.

Labeled with inspection stamps.

Enna stared at it.

“I signed the receiving check.”

Eve moved closer.

“You checked a delivered component against its paperwork.”

“I let them install it.”

“The inspection results were falsified,” Eve said. “So was the authorization.”

Enna shook her head.

“I should have opened the housing.”

“Would you have recognized what was inside?” Asha asked.

Enna did not answer.

Asha’s voice softened.

“We needed an old military archive and two encounters to recognize it today.”

Dinraal looked at the delivery date.

Before the survey crews disappeared.

Before the instruments began disagreeing.

Before anyone at Halden’s Reach understood that they needed to be afraid.

“Can we find that maintenance vessel?”

Arcturus was already searching.

They told the families what they had found that evening.

No one was promised a rescue.

No one was told the recordings answered questions they did not answer.

The recorder ended before either survey ship vanished.

But it held days when those people were alive and doing ordinary work.

Lysa chose to listen alone.

Dinraal gave her the copied file in a small player Johanna found among the hospital supplies.

“There are several entries,” he said. “Eve marked the ones where he speaks.”

Lysa held the player in both hands.

“Did you listen?”

“To some.”

“Was he frightened?”

Dinraal remembered the man refusing to recover the unknown device.

“He was careful.”

Lysa closed her eyes.

After a moment, she nodded.

“Yes,” she said. “He usually was.”

She went inside her room and shut the door.

Dinraal stood on the path until Isolde gently drew him onward.

Arcturus found the maintenance vessel in an Imperial traffic register.

He also found four other delivery assignments.

Three had been completed.

The fourth was still pending when the register was last updated.

Dinraal arrived at the command room to find the map already open.

Four systems.

Four places with people living beneath skies they still trusted.

“Halden’s Reach was one of five,” Arcturus said.

Aurelius stood beside him.

“Couriers?”

“Being prepared. Independent routes. Printed inspection images and the raw evidence.”

“Tell them to stop receiving navigation equipment from that depot,” Dinraal said.

“And to inspect what they already have,” Isolde added.

Asha pointed toward the device’s lower structure.

“They must not activate it to test it. Physical isolation first. The Halden logs show the distortion increased after it began exchanging data with the relay.”

Arcturus added the instruction.

Dinraal studied the maintenance vessel’s registry.

“Was its crew aware?”

“Unknown.”

“Then the warning needs to say that too.”

Arcturus nodded.

Aurelius folded his arms.

“If the depot is compromised, more than those four colonies may be affected.”

“We’ll warn the Imperial colony,” Arcturus said. “Ask them to trace every shipment.”

For several minutes, the room filled with practical questions.

Courier range.

Fuel.

Which settlements possessed independent communications.

Whether their own fleet had taken aboard equipment from the same source.

Then the first warning ship received clearance.

Dinraal watched its marker leave orbit.

This time, they were acting before a distress call.

He returned to Hearth after sunset.

The foundation of their house had cured.

The first wall frames stood against the darkening sky.

Isolde walked beside him through the opening where their front door would eventually hang.

The First Weapon followed, examined a stack of timber, and settled where Dinraal suspected their bed would go.

“Apparently that’s decided,” Isolde said.

Dinraal smiled faintly.

They stood in the unfinished kitchen.

Without glass in the window, the evening air moved freely through the frame.

He could smell damp earth.

Somewhere farther up the terrace, Beren was telling a younger worker that a tool had a proper place and the ground was not it.

Isolde rested her hands on the sill.

“We found something that can help.”

“Yes.”

“And we sent the warning.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“What is it?”

Dinraal leaned against the frame beside her.

“I keep thinking about how ordinary it looked. A delivery. A signature. Someone doing their job.”

Isolde watched the river.

“That’s how it got close.”

He nodded.

Below them, a light came on outside one of the new houses.

Then another.

They stayed until the evening cooled.

Before leaving, Dinraal checked the marked route of the first courier on his communicator.

It had cleared the system.

The warning was on its way.
