The two ships beside the carrier were laying something in space.

Alexander’s scouts had watched them for eleven hours.

One moved slowly along a curved course. The other followed at a distance, stopping wherever the first had stopped.

Behind them remained a scattered line of dark objects.

Dinraal studied the recording.

“Mines?”

“Possibly,” Alexander said.

“Anchors?” Isolde asked.

Asha stood closer to the display.

“We haven’t seen them activate.”

At the center of the formation, the damaged carrier remained almost motionless.

Its broken ring was gone. The other two rested at different angles around the hull.

Eve brought up a second image.

The objects were easier to see against the faint light of a distant planet.

Six.

Then nine.

By the final frame, fourteen.

“They’re building something,” Aramaeis said.

Dinraal followed the curve with his eyes.

It was wider than the carrier.

Much wider.

“They’re replacing the ring.”

Asha said nothing for a moment.

Then she adjusted the projection, extending the observed arc.

The completed circle would have enclosed all three ships.

Nobody liked the scale of it.

The old ring had been part of a vessel. It had supports, joints, and a repair band they could reach.

This structure was being spread across hundreds of kilometers.

Gilgamesh leaned back in his chair.

“So we broke its door.”

“And now it may be building a larger one,” Tiamat said.

Arcturus studied the estimated circle.

“Can we interrupt construction?”

“Probably,” Alexander replied. “But we don’t know what those objects contain, what protects them, or whether completing the circle is even necessary.”

Dinraal looked toward the two smaller ships.

“Do we have names?”

“No visible registrations.”

“Imperial designs?”

“One is,” Eve said. “An older survey vessel. The other has been altered too extensively to identify.”

The survey ship appeared on the display.

Its hull was long and narrow, with a broad equipment bay beneath the main deck.

Dinraal had seen vessels like it carrying geological probes.

Now something pale ran along its underside.

“People aboard?” he asked.

“Unknown.”

That word had begun to wear on him.

Unknown cargo.

Unknown crew.

Unknown consequences.

Isolde rested a hand beside the projection controls.

“Then we watch the ships as closely as the objects.”

Alexander nodded.

“I’ve asked the scouts to do exactly that.”

The next report did not come from the scouts.

It came from a courier carrying messages between the Imperial settlements.

The courier’s captain arrived in Hearth’s operations room with dust still on his boots and a folded pressure suit beneath one arm.

“Three colonies received evacuation instructions,” he said.

Arcturus straightened.

“From whom?”

“You.”

The room went still.

The captain set a storage unit on the table.

“We brought the recordings physically. Nothing has been connected to your systems.”

Eve took it to the isolated reader.

A moment later, Arcturus’s voice filled the room.

Calm.

Precise.

Completely familiar.

“Regional instability has compromised existing shelter arrangements. Civilian transports are to assemble at the designated transfer coordinates. Escorts will meet you on arrival.”

Dinraal looked at the real Arcturus.

His expression did not change.

The recording continued.

It named ships.

Listed departure windows.

Included an authorization sequence.

Then it ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, Cleopatra asked, “Did anyone leave?”

“One settlement refused until a courier confirmed it. Another delayed because its transports weren’t ready.”

“And the third?”

The captain looked toward Arcturus.

“Two ships departed before the warning reached them.”

The coordinates lay inside the unfinished circle.

Dinraal stood with both hands against the table.

“How many people?”

“Four hundred and sixty-three between the two transports.”

“When do they arrive?”

The captain gave the departure times.

Alexander was already calculating.

“If their drives perform as registered, the first could reach the system in nineteen hours.”

“And if they don’t?” Isolde asked.

“Sooner or later.”

Arcturus turned to the duty officer.

“Recall the nearest patrols. Send couriers along the route from both directions. No general broadcast to those coordinates.”

The officer hurried away.

Cleopatra began arranging transport capacity.

Julius pulled up fuel reserves.

For a moment, the room moved around Dinraal while he listened again to the memory of Arcturus’s voice.

The Questioner had collected so many voices.

It did not need to imitate someone they loved.

Sometimes it only needed to sound like someone they had learned to obey.

Aurelius stood beside the courier captain.

“Where did the authorization sequence come from?”

“The old regional network, we think.”

Arcturus nodded once.

“The depot would have had access.”

Dinraal looked at the map.

“They’re bringing people to the new opening.”

“Or bringing ships with working navigation references,” Eve said.

Asha’s eyes moved between the civilian route and the unfinished circle.

“Possibly both.”

The settlement leaders needed a correction immediately.

Arcturus recorded it himself.

Then he deleted the first version.

Dinraal watched from the doorway.

“What was wrong with it?”

“I was going to tell them to trust only my voice.”

He looked at the blank recorder.

“That would have been an extraordinarily foolish thing to say.”

The second message was shorter.

No fleet order to evacuate was valid without confirmation through the agreed courier procedure.

Any vessel already traveling toward the false rendezvous should stop at the nearest safe point and await a physical escort.

No one was to approach the designated coordinates.

When he finished, Arcturus remained seated.

Dinraal came into the room.

“They used what they had.”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t give that order.”

“I know.”

But knowing did not make the recording easier to hear.

Arcturus looked up.

“I have spent years trying to make certain people recognize my voice in a crisis.”

Dinraal pulled out the other chair.

“Then we’ll give them something else to recognize.”

“Such as?”

“A ship that actually comes to meet them.”

Arcturus looked toward the fleet map.

After a moment, he nodded.

“Let’s send several.”

They departed before sunset.

This expedition carried more shuttles than weapons.

Two escorts accompanied the lead vessel. Medical personnel prepared for crowded compartments. Engineers loaded spare communications equipment that had never passed through the compromised depot.

The portable reference assembly occupied its familiar place in the hold.

Its replacement couplings were marked in bright paint.

Dinraal checked the rescue gear beside Isolde.

Neither said anything about the river.

They had gone.

They would go again.

For now, people were traveling toward a promise no one had made.

Tiamat joined them carrying the updated passenger lists.

“The first transport is the Morrow,” she said. “Two hundred and eighty-seven aboard. The second is the Lantern, with one hundred and seventy-six.”

Dinraal repeated the names quietly.

Isolde looked toward the boarding hatch.

“Who’s taking the second interception point?”

“Aurelius,” Tiamat said. “With the other escort.”

Dinraal glanced up.

Aurelius appeared at the end of the passage, fastening his gloves.

“What?” he asked.

“Nothing.”

“That expression rarely means nothing.”

Dinraal crossed to him.

For a moment, he struggled with an instruction he would have resented receiving himself.

Aurelius spared him the effort.

“We will intercept the transport. We will verify its condition. We will bring it back.”

Dinraal nodded.

Then embraced him.

Aurelius held him briefly.

“I’ll see you at the rendezvous.”

The first interception was almost easy.

The Lantern emerged near the outer planet, several hours ahead of its expected schedule.

Its captain had pushed the drives because the false message warned that the safe departure window was closing.

Aurelius’s escort moved into view.

The civilian ship immediately changed course away from it.

“Can’t blame them,” the escort captain murmured.

Aurelius watched the transport accelerate.

“Show them the inspection code. Lights only.”

The escort’s forward lamps flashed the sequence distributed during the last courier visit.

The Lantern did not answer.

Then a faint pattern appeared along its docking collar.

A question.

The escort supplied the response.

Still the transport kept its distance.

Aurelius smiled slightly.

“Good captain.”

They sent a shuttle with two crew members known to the colony and a printed copy of the courier warning.

It took another forty minutes.

When the Lantern finally shut down its drives, its captain sat on the shuttle’s open ramp with her head bowed between her hands.

Aurelius joined her.

“I nearly took them there,” she said.

“You stopped.”

“Because you came.”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the passenger windows.

Faces pressed close to the glass.

Aurelius waited beside her until she could stand.

Then they went to tell the passengers where they were actually going.

The Morrow had taken a different route.

Its captain had followed every instruction in the false order, including a final change of approach transmitted after departure.

Alexander’s ship reached the expected interception point and found nothing.

They waited four minutes.

Then six.

The scouts near the construction site sent a narrow-beam report through the waiting relay vessel.

A civilian transport had entered the circle.

Dinraal stared at the marker.

The Morrow.

Two smaller vessels moved to meet it.

The damaged carrier remained beyond them.

“Time to contact?” Alexander asked.

“Eleven minutes at maximum approach.”

“Do it.”

The ship accelerated.

Dinraal was already moving toward the hold.

The Morrow’s captain was named Sen Var.

He had been hauling settlers and equipment for twenty-three years.

He knew the difference between a military escort and a survey vessel.

The ship approaching his port side was plainly a survey vessel.

Its transmitted identification insisted otherwise.

He looked at his navigator.

“Get me the rendezvous commander.”

“We have an automated reply.”

“Then get me a person.”

The bridge speakers clicked.

Arcturus’s voice answered.

“Maintain your course, Captain. Your passengers will be transferred shortly.”

Sen Var felt his shoulders ease.

Then the voice continued.

“Maintain your course, Captain. Your passengers will be transferred shortly.”

Exactly the same breath.

Exactly the same pause.

He looked at the dark objects hanging ahead.

“Stop engines.”

The navigator turned.

“Captain?”

“Now.”

On the port display, the survey vessel opened its equipment bay.

Something unfolded beneath it.

Sen Var reached for the alarm.

Dinraal saw the tether strike the Morrow.

It crossed the space between the survey ship and the civilian hull in a pale line, fastening near the forward navigation compartment.

Another followed.

The Morrow’s maneuvering thrusters flared.

Its bow continued turning toward the nearest object in the circle.

“External control,” Eve said.

Alexander opened a channel.

“Morrow, this is the escort approaching from your stern. Cut power to your main navigation unit. Use local thruster controls.”

A burst of frightened voices answered.

Then the channel cleared.

The captain sounded breathless.

“Who are you?”

“People trying to get you out.”

Asha pointed at her display.

“The nearest anchors are waking.”

Three dark objects brightened.

The space between them seemed to crease.

Dinraal sealed his helmet.

“Isolde?”

“Ready.”

Tiamat stood beside the lock.

“I’ll take the second tether.”

Alexander looked back from the bridge display.

“Cut them and get clear. We’ll cover the transport.”

The outer door opened.

They went.

The first tether tried to move away from Dinraal.

He had expected a cable.

He found something that flexed beneath his hand.

Silver closed around it.

The pale surface split, then contracted with enough force to drag him toward the survey vessel.

He braced against the Morrow’s hull.

“Isolde. It’s holding.”

She landed beside him.

A narrow blade formed along her forearm.

One cut.

The tension vanished.

The severed length whipped away from the hull.

Across the bow, Tiamat tore the second attachment free.

Inside the transport, the emergency lights steadied.

Then the nearest anchor flashed.

Dinraal felt the distance to Isolde change.

She was beside him.

Then farther away.

Then beside him again.

“Reference,” he said.

Asha answered immediately.

“Coming up.”

The escort moved between two of the dark objects.

Its assembly engaged.

The Morrow’s bow stopped shuddering.

Alexander’s voice reached them.

“Captain Var, follow our stern lights. Local control only.”

The transport began to move.

Slowly.

Too slowly.

The survey vessel turned to block it.

Tiamat saw the people through its forward window.

Three figures stood behind the glass.

One raised a hand.

Another pulled them back.

She checked her approach.

“Alexander. There are people on that ship.”

The escort’s weapons remained trained on it.

“We see them.”

The survey vessel accelerated.

Its equipment bay opened wider.

Another pale tether emerged.

Tiamat moved toward it.

Dinraal caught the change in her trajectory.

“I’m with you.”

Isolde stayed on the Morrow, maintaining a stable point against its forward hull while the escort’s field covered their retreat.

Dinraal and Tiamat reached the survey vessel together.

He struck the tether housing.

She caught the machinery beneath it.

Silver spread across the exposed mounting frame.

They pulled.

The whole assembly tore away.

The survey ship rolled.

Through the window, someone fell.

Dinraal looked toward the bridge.

The figure on the floor crawled to a console.

A moment later, the vessel’s engines stopped.

Its running lights flashed irregularly.

Then, very deliberately, they flashed again.

A distress sequence.

There was no time to board.

The third hostile ship was approaching from beyond the carrier.

The objects around the circle brightened one after another.

Alexander watched the changing distances on his display.

“Recovery craft to the survey vessel. External tow. Keep its systems isolated.”

The pilot acknowledged.

Dinraal reached the forward window.

Inside, a woman stared at him through a cracked visor.

Blood ran along one side of her face.

Behind her, a man held a heavy tool over a shattered control panel.

Dinraal pointed toward the approaching recovery craft.

Then made a pulling motion.

The woman understood.

She pressed a hand against the glass.

He pressed his against the other side.

Only for a moment.

Then he moved to secure the tow.

The circle never closed around them.

One escort held the stable route.

The other fired into the unoccupied space ahead, destroying two deployed objects before they could fully activate.

The carrier attempted to turn its remaining rings.

A dark surface formed between three distant anchors.

It spread.

Stopped.

Spread again.

Dinraal watched from the survey vessel’s hull as the recovery craft pulled them toward the escort.

Behind him, the Morrow followed the guiding lights.

Its passengers had crowded into the interior shelters.

He could not see them.

He kept counting anyway.

Two hundred and eighty-seven.

Three people visible aboard the survey ship.

Others, perhaps.

Isolde’s voice came through.

“Dinraal. We’re clear of the first field.”

He looked toward her silver figure on the transport.

“Coming.”

The recovery craft’s pilot confirmed the tow was secure.

Dinraal released his grip and crossed to Isolde.

Together, they left the civilian hull as the escorts drew back beyond the unfinished structure.

No one pursued past the outer anchors.

Alexander waited until every friendly vessel was accelerating away.

Then he ordered the jump.

They found seven people aboard the survey ship.

Four had been locked below the bridge.

The three above had kept the ship operational because refusing meant the others lost air.

The woman at the window was its original navigator.

The man with the tool had been ordered to restore the tether controls.

Instead, he had smashed the panel.

Dinraal met them in the medical compartment.

The navigator lay on a bed while a medic cleaned the cut along her scalp.

“You saw us,” she said.

“Tiamat did.”

Her eyes moved toward the doorway.

Tiamat stood there, uncertain whether to enter.

The navigator held out her hand.

Tiamat crossed the room and took it.

For a while, neither spoke.

Captain Var found Dinraal outside the Morrow’s temporary passenger area.

“I stopped too late,” he said.

Dinraal looked through the open doors.

A child slept across two seats.

An older man shared a cup of water with the woman beside him.

Someone was arguing with a steward about a missing bag.

“You stopped,” Dinraal said.

“The message had the codes.”

“We know.”

“It had his voice.”

“We know that too.”

The captain rubbed his face.

“What am I supposed to trust now?”

Dinraal did not answer quickly.

Then he looked toward the passenger room again.

“The crew who told you the escort looked wrong. The navigator who can check your position without the network. The people who come close enough to help you turn around.”

Captain Var followed his gaze.

His shoulders lowered a little.

“That sounds slower.”

“It is.”

After a moment, the captain nodded.

“I can live with slower.”

The two civilian transports reunited at the outer rendezvous.

Four hundred and sixty-three passengers.

Seven additional survivors from the survey ship.

No civilian ships lost.

Aurelius came aboard Alexander’s vessel after the transfer checks were complete.

Dinraal met him at the lock.

For a heartbeat, they simply looked at one another.

Then Aurelius opened his arms.

Dinraal stepped into them.

“Good captain?” Dinraal asked quietly.

“Very.”

“So was ours.”

Aurelius drew back.

“We should keep them.”

Dinraal laughed.

It surprised him how easily the sound came.

Later, Eve brought him the construction images.

He was sitting beside Isolde in the observation compartment.

The civilian transports traveled beyond the window, escorted toward the first safe holding point.

“The larger opening failed to establish fully,” Eve said. “We interrupted the deployment and denied it the transports.”

“But it nearly worked,” Isolde said.

“Yes.”

Dinraal studied the circle.

The broken carrier had not remained broken in the way they wanted.

It had found another arrangement.

More equipment.

More distance.

More stolen ships.

“We can’t assume the next one will have rings,” he said.

Eve nodded.

“We’ll study what the components do, not only what they look like.”

She left the images with them.

For a while, Dinraal watched the transports instead.

The Questioner had tried to use rescue orders to bring people into its reach.

It had learned something about them.

They would have to learn faster.

Isolde rested her head against his shoulder.

“What are you thinking?”

“That we need more escorts.”

She smiled faintly.

“A surprisingly practical answer.”

“And more couriers. More people who know how to check these things.”

“We have seven new people who may know quite a lot.”

He looked toward the medical deck.

“Yes.”

Outside, the Morrow changed course slightly to settle beside the Lantern.

Two ships traveling together.

This time, they knew who had come to meet them.
