The first landing shuttle remained on the ground for twenty minutes before everyone was ready to leave it.

Nobody complained.

The hatch stood open.

Beyond it waited a covered walkway, a row of chairs, and people who had been told not to crowd the entrance.

Sunlight reached halfway up the ramp.

Lethan’s granddaughter stood just beyond its edge.

Her name was Mira.

Dinraal had learned it during the voyage, along with the names of several children who had begun following Gilgamesh whenever the medical staff permitted it.

Now Mira held her grandfather’s hand so tightly that her fingers had gone pale.

“Where does it stop?” she asked.

Lethan looked out at the sky.

“It doesn’t have a ceiling.”

“I know that.”

She said it with the impatience of someone who understood the explanation and remained entirely unconvinced by the evidence.

Dinraal stayed beside the hatch.

He could have offered to carry her.

He thought she might remember being carried into this moment differently from choosing it herself.

So he waited.

A breeze passed through the open door.

Mira leaned backward.

“It came inside.”

“The wind,” Lethan said.

She looked at him.

He smiled with trembling lips.

“It does that.”

Rhiannon had arranged the covered walkway.

Halen had built it.

Johanna had insisted on chairs at short intervals and a quiet room immediately beyond the landing area.

Dinraal had thought they were preparing for exhaustion.

Now he understood the roof.

One of the younger men from the liner stepped onto the ramp, looked upward, and abruptly sat down.

An orderly crouched beside him.

They spoke for a moment.

Then the orderly helped him reach the shade.

No alarm.

No embarrassment made public.

Just another way to get from one place to the next.

Isolde stood at the bottom of the ramp.

She watched Mira studying the distance between the shuttle and the walkway.

“Would you like me to come up?”

Mira shook her head.

After another moment, she took a step.

Then a second.

Lethan moved with her.

Halfway down, she stopped and stared at the grass beyond the path.

“That isn’t painted.”

“No,” Isolde said.

“Can I touch it?”

“Yes.”

Mira looked toward the sky once more.

Then she kept walking.

The survivors did not all land that day.

Some needed medical care aboard ship.

Others wanted another night behind familiar walls.

The transports remained available.

Cleopatra changed the accommodation lists three times before lunch and once while eating it.

Julius found additional bedding.

Mara Den recruited people who remembered arriving from Halden with nothing they had expected to need.

By afternoon, the settlement had become a collection of small acts of welcome.

A door held open.

A cup refilled.

Someone showing an old man that a window could be opened and closed whenever he wished.

The gardener from the liner’s cultivation room stood beside Hearth’s agricultural sheds with his rescued shears in one hand.

He had been introduced to a plot of ground.

Now he was arguing about drainage.

Dinraal passed him on the way to the hospital.

“Everything all right?”

“No,” the gardener said. “They want to plant here before they understand what the water does.”

The young agricultural worker beside him looked desperate.

Dinraal studied the sloping ground.

Then the shears.

“I’ll leave you to it.”

The old man nodded, already returning to his argument.

Dinraal walked on smiling.

Sovan slept through the first afternoon.

She had intended to inspect her temporary quarters, eat, and then find Enna.

Instead, she sat on the bed to remove her boots.

When she woke, evening light filled the room.

Her boots were still on.

For several seconds, she listened in terror.

No circulation hum.

No distant impact from the docking arms.

No announcement tone.

She stood too quickly and caught the wall.

A knock sounded.

Sovan froze.

“Sovan? It’s Enna.”

She crossed the room and opened the door.

Enna held two bowls.

“I wasn’t certain whether to wake you.”

“What time is it?”

“Time to eat something.”

Sovan looked past her.

A path.

Low buildings.

A woman carrying laundry.

The world outside had continued without demanding her attention.

“Did anyone need me?”

Enna’s expression changed.

“There’s work waiting when you want it.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I know.”

Sovan stood in the doorway for another moment.

Then she stepped aside.

The first family inquiry reached them before the last shuttle finished unloading.

It had traveled back with the courier carrying their initial rescue report.

The elderly engineer who had supplied the Summer Orchard’s construction plans had asked one question.

Her brother’s name was Hadrin Vale.

Was he among the living?

Dinraal read the message in the hospital office.

Beside him, Isolde opened Lethan’s ledger.

They searched the copied passenger list first.

Then the current count.

She found the name.

For a moment, neither spoke.

“He’s here,” she said.

Dinraal looked at the entry.

Original passenger.

Cultivation crew.

Temporary accommodation, room fourteen.

He knew exactly which man that was.

Hadrin did not believe them.

He stood in the doorway of his room with a towel over one shoulder and stared at the paused image on Isolde’s tablet.

“That’s my sister’s name.”

“Yes,” she said.

“But that isn’t—”

He stopped.

The woman on the screen sat among models of ships.

Her hair was white.

Her hands were thin.

Hadrin took the tablet.

Moved it farther away.

Then closer.

“Oh,” he whispered.

Dinraal pulled out a chair.

Hadrin sat without noticing.

“How old?”

“Eighty-three.”

He pressed his lips together.

“She was always saying she would outlast me.”

Isolde knelt beside the chair.

“She helped us understand your ship. The service passages. The emergency power connections.”

Hadrin stared at the image.

“She helped you come?”

“Yes.”

He bowed over the tablet.

For a while, Dinraal and Isolde waited.

At last, Hadrin looked up.

“Can she hear me?”

“This is a recording,” Isolde said gently. “We can make one for her. A courier will take it.”

Hadrin nodded.

He wiped his face with the towel.

Then looked toward the window.

“No. Outside.”

“Outside?”

“If she’s going to see me after all this time, she’s going to see where I am.”

They recorded his message beside the agricultural plots.

Hadrin refused to sit.

He stood with the young worker he had argued with earlier carefully out of view.

The first attempt lasted four seconds.

The second made it as far as his sister’s name.

On the third, he looked directly into the recorder.

“I’m alive.”

He laughed once, unsteadily.

“You’ll want more detail than that. You always did.”

Behind him, the wind stirred a line of newly planted leaves.

He glanced toward them.

“I’ve found people making a mess of a perfectly serviceable piece of land. So there’s plenty for me to do.”

Isolde smiled behind the recorder.

Hadrin swallowed.

“I don’t know when I can come to you. They’re still checking my health, and I’m apparently older than I remember.”

He looked down at his hands.

Then back up.

“But I want to.”

His voice broke.

“I would like to see you.”

When he finished, Isolde stopped the recording.

Hadrin stood very still.

Dinraal rested a hand on his shoulder.

“We’ll make certain it reaches her.”

Not every name received that answer.

That evening, Lethan sat with Mara and two volunteers in a quiet room beside the hospital.

They worked through the old manifest.

The rescued.

The dead.

The transferred.

The missing.

Sometimes Lethan supplied a detail that did not fit into the form.

“She liked music.”

“He always took the late watch so the younger ones could sleep.”

“They should know she wasn’t alone.”

Mara wrote those things down too.

Dinraal stopped at the doorway.

Lethan looked up.

“I thought the ledger would be the difficult part.”

Dinraal came inside.

“What is?”

“Deciding how much to tell people.”

“Ask them,” Mara said softly. “Tell them what you know first. Let them decide what they can hear next.”

Lethan nodded.

He looked very tired.

Dinraal drew a chair beside him.

“Which name?”

Lethan turned the page.

For the next hour, Dinraal stayed.

The shipyard briefing took place the following morning.

Sovan attended after Johanna examined her wrist and made her promise not to demonstrate anything heavy.

She brought three notebooks.

Maintenance records.

Power interruptions.

Repairs she had been ordered to make outside the liner.

Asha regarded the notebooks with an expression usually reserved for much more elaborate instruments.

“You kept dates for every interruption?”

“As many as I could.”

“Why?”

“So I could work out when to shut down the cultivation pumps before the supply fell.”

Eve opened the oldest volume.

Neat columns filled the pages.

In places, another person’s handwriting continued the entries.

Sovan touched one such passage.

“My predecessor.”

“Where is he now?” Dinraal asked.

“Died nine years ago.”

Eve waited before turning the page.

Then she placed the notes beside the readings from their escape.

The central line bending.

The reference field slipping.

The liner’s docking conduits brightening.

“Can you explain these marks?” she asked.

Sovan leaned forward.

“Backflow.”

Asha looked up.

“In the cooling system?”

“Power.”

The room grew quiet.

Most of the time, power had flowed from the arc into the Summer Orchard.

During certain gate operations, it had flowed the other way.

The liner’s remaining storage banks drained.

The cultivation lights dimmed.

Some machinery stopped entirely.

“They used the ships as reserves,” Enna said.

Sovan nodded.

“Not only ours. The freight hauler beside us lost lights at the same time.”

Asha overlaid the maintenance dates with the carrier records they had recovered earlier.

Several matched.

Not all.

Enough.

Dinraal looked at the image of the immense structure.

“Then the captive vessels are part of its machinery.”

“Some of them,” Eve said.

Aramaeis stood beside the table, watching the great lines reach inward toward the darkness.

“And those?”

Eve brought up a sequence from the scout.

A ship approached one of the rings.

The line nearest it brightened before the opening formed.

Then another sequence from their withdrawal.

The liner’s power disconnected.

A section of the arc changed.

The central darkness moved.

“We thought everything came from the center,” Asha said.

She traced the illuminated sections outward.

“But at least some of the work is being done here.”

“Keeping the openings stable?” Isolde asked.

“Possibly.”

“Keeping the thing at the center stable?” Aramaeis asked.

Eve looked at him.

“That remains possible too.”

Dinraal studied the captive ships again.

Whatever answer they found, firing into the arc was becoming less simple by the hour.

The eleven-hour discrepancy came from Lethan.

He arrived during the afternoon session carrying the original ledger.

“I need to correct something.”

Asha moved a chair toward him.

He remained standing.

“The clocks.”

Dinraal looked up.

“You said they were close.”

“To the date you gave us. Over the whole journey, yes.”

Lethan opened the ledger near its middle.

“But there were days when they disagreed.”

He showed them two entries.

The same transfer recorded by a steward near the docking deck and another on the forward levels.

Eleven hours apart.

“Bad clock?” Enna asked.

“That’s what we thought. Then the crew who went outside came back insisting they had been gone less than an hour.”

Sovan looked at the date.

Her expression changed.

“I remember that.”

“What happened?” Isolde asked.

“We replaced an exterior valve. It was a short job.”

“And aboard the ship?” Eve asked.

“They missed two meals,” Lethan said. “We thought they’d been taken.”

Asha sat down slowly.

Lethan looked between them.

“There are more.”

He turned another page.

They did not decide what it meant that afternoon.

There were too many unreliable clocks.

Too many years of damaged equipment.

But the discrepancies clustered around transfers through particular sections of the arc.

The same sections.

Again and again.

Eve marked them on the reconstruction.

Dinraal watched the marks gather near the largest intact ring.

“We need to warn the scouts.”

Alexander was already writing the message.

“Independent clocks. Paired vessels. No close approach.”

“And the people still aboard those ships?” Johanna asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Twenty-six years on the Summer Orchard.

Other vessels older than Aramaeis’s surviving records.

Lights still burning.

Dinraal felt an old, dangerous hope trying to become certainty.

He held it back.

“We don’t know,” he said.

Johanna nodded.

For now, that was the honest answer.

Mira met the First Weapon outside the dining hall.

He had been lying in the sun, comfortably obstructing part of the path.

She stopped several paces away.

Lethan stopped with her.

“Is that a person?”

“No,” Dinraal said, approaching from the steps.

“What is he?”

Dinraal considered several answers.

“Someone who likes being scratched.”

The First Weapon raised his head.

Mira examined him.

Then Dinraal.

“Does he bite?”

“He hasn’t bitten anyone who was being kind to him.”

“That isn’t the same answer.”

Lethan made a small sound.

It took Dinraal a moment to realize he was laughing.

“No,” Dinraal admitted. “It isn’t.”

He crouched beside the creature and held out his hand.

The First Weapon licked it.

Mira looked scandalized.

“He got you wet.”

“He does that.”

She stepped closer.

Dinraal showed her where to put her hand.

When the First Weapon leaned into her touch, she went utterly still.

Then she smiled.

Above them, something small and winged crossed from one roof to another.

Mira looked up sharply.

The creature beneath her hand ceased to exist for her.

“Grandfather.”

Lethan followed her gaze.

The winged thing settled on a gutter and shook itself.

Mira gripped his sleeve.

“That’s one.”

“Yes,” he said.

She stared.

“I told the little ones about them.”

“I know.”

Her face tightened with sudden worry.

“I got the feet wrong.”

Lethan bent and kissed the top of her head.

“You can tell them again.”

That night, Dinraal and Isolde ate late.

They had meant to come home earlier.

Neither regretted where the hours had gone.

Rain threatened beyond the western hills, and the kitchen smelled of soup warming on the stove.

Isolde stood at the counter, checking a small stack of copied names against Lethan’s records.

Dinraal set two bowls on the table.

“How many messages?”

“Forty-two ready for the next courier. More tomorrow.”

“Hadrin’s?”

“First packet.”

He nodded.

She put the papers aside.

For several minutes, they ate without speaking.

Then Dinraal said, “When Mira saw the grass, I thought she might be frightened.”

“She was.”

“I thought seeing it would fix that.”

Isolde looked at him gently.

“It helped.”

He rested his spoon against the bowl.

“She asked if it was painted.”

“I heard.”

He looked toward their garden.

Two narrow beds.

A fence that still needed finishing.

The ordinary world, waiting outside.

“I don’t know how people learn to live after that.”

Isolde reached across the table.

“Perhaps we should let them show us.”

He took her hand.

After a moment, he nodded.

The first courier departed the next morning.

It carried medical requests, inspection updates, and forty-two messages from people who had been missing for years.

Hadrin stood near the landing field with his hands in his pockets.

Lethan stood beside him.

Mira watched from beneath the covered walkway.

Dinraal and Isolde remained a little farther back.

The courier lifted into the pale morning sky.

Hadrin followed it until it became too small to see.

“How long?” he asked.

Dinraal told him.

The old man considered the answer.

Then nodded.

“I can wait that long.”

Beside him, Lethan opened his ledger.

For twenty-six years, he had recorded arrivals, departures, and people whose fate he could not explain.

Now he turned to a clean page.

He wrote the date.

Below it, he added a new heading.

Messages sent home.

Mira watched him.

Then she held out her hand for the pencil.
