The Last Silver

The first argument about the settlement’s future concerned a wall.

Dinraal had expected the Questioner to feature more prominently.

Instead, Cleopatra stood beside a projected map with one hand on her hip while Alexander explained, for the third time, why the proposed perimeter occupied its current position.

“If we move it farther out, we need more equipment to monitor it.”

“If we leave it there,” Cleopatra replied, “we’ll be moving it again before the next transports arrive.”

“It is a temporary defensive line.”

“Everything becomes temporary when you put it in the wrong place.”

Julius quietly moved a cup away from her elbow.

Around the table sat the familiar members of their group and four of the new arrivals: a water engineer, a builder, a teacher, and a woman who had managed food distribution aboard one of the refugee vessels.

Dinraal had asked them to attend.

Now he was beginning to suspect they understood settlement planning better than he did.

The builder leaned forward.

“Why a wall?”

Alexander turned toward him.

“To control access.”

“A fence can do that. If something gets past the ships and the people wearing silver, I doubt masonry will trouble it.”

Gilgamesh nodded approvingly.

“I like him.”

The builder looked mildly concerned.

Dinraal studied the map.

“Fence the active settlement,” he said. “Mark the ground we expect to build on. Leave room to expand.”

Alexander considered it.

“We’ll need controlled gates.”

“And a clear route for the construction vehicles,” the builder added.

Cleopatra lowered her hand.

“That will work.”

Julius entered the change before anyone could reconsider.

Isolde, seated beside Dinraal, slid a second map toward the center.

“Then we need to discuss this.”

A large section of open ground lay between the planned habitats and the medical facilities.

Alexander frowned.

“I thought that was reserved for storage.”

“It was,” Isolde said. “I’d like to use part of it for a school and a common hall.”

The teacher sat straighter.

“We can begin lessons anywhere dry.”

“I know,” Isolde said. “But I’d like you to have somewhere that remains yours after a cargo delivery.”

Dinraal looked at her.

She had spent the previous afternoon visiting the new arrivals. He had expected a list of faulty doors and missing blankets.

Instead, she had brought plans.

“How much space?” Julius asked.

The teacher leaned over the map.

And the meeting moved on.

Afterward, Dinraal caught up with Isolde outside.

She carried her tablet beneath one arm and walked with the focused expression she wore when working through a difficult problem.

“You didn’t tell me about the school.”

“I thought I’d bring it to the meeting.”

“You should.”

She glanced at him.

“Was that agreement or permission?”

He stopped.

Isolde stopped too.

For a moment, they looked at each other.

Then he sighed.

“Poor phrasing.”

“A little.”

“I liked hearing you explain it.”

Her expression softened.

“Better.”

He fell into step beside her.

“Have you decided where our garden goes?”

“No. I’m trying to prevent Julius from storing replacement air filters in the school first.”

“A worthy ambition.”

“He offered to put them along one wall.”

“Educational.”

“I said something similar.”

Ahead, the First Weapon emerged from behind a stack of containers with a child following at a respectful distance.

The child held a strip of cloth.

Dinraal narrowed his eyes.

“What have you been doing?”

The First Weapon approached.

A crooked bow had been tied around him.

Isolde pressed her lips together.

The child looked between them.

“He stood still.”

“That does make a compelling defense,” Dinraal said.

He crouched and checked that the cloth sat loosely.

The First Weapon nudged his hand.

“Fine. But if Gilgamesh asks, this was your decision.”

By the tenth day on the surface, the camp had become difficult to recognize from its first survey images.

Straight paths divided the habitat rows. The kitchen had walls. The medical shelter had acquired a second room, which Johanna filled before the builders finished fitting its door.

Above the river terrace, enclosed growing beds stood beneath clear roofs.

The agricultural team celebrated their first seedlings with an enthusiasm Dinraal had previously associated with military victories.

Asha photographed every tray.

Eve reminded her that successful germination was only the beginning.

Asha photographed those too.

Construction remained noisy and occasionally chaotic, but the noise now followed a schedule.

At midday, machinery stopped long enough for people to eat.

In the evenings, voices continued outside the shelters.

Someone had brought a stringed instrument down from orbit.

Someone else could almost play it.

Rhiannon expressed hope that practice would improve matters.

Tiamat suggested distance.

Dinraal found himself learning names.

The builder from the meeting was Halen. The teacher was Nessa. The water engineer, Meret, had a habit of tapping her thumb against her fingers while calculating.

They began stopping him to ask questions.

Then, more encouragingly, they began telling him what they had already done.

Arcturus called them to orbit two mornings later.

His message contained no alarm code.

Dinraal still felt the silver rise before he finished reading it.

Isolde watched from the doorway.

“What is it?”

“Survey contact. Outer belt.”

“Hostile?”

“Unknown.”

She reached for her communicator.

“I’ll tell Aurelius we’re going up.”

The object appeared as a small, irregular shape on the flagship’s display.

At first, Dinraal thought it was debris.

Then the image sharpened.

A narrow body.

Three folded arms.

A damaged engine housing at one end.

“A probe?” he asked.

Arcturus nodded.

“Imperial design. Old.”

“How old?”

“Eve is working on that.”

At the science station, Eve enlarged a section of its hull.

“Long enough that the registry format predates the colony’s current records. No active drive. It’s tumbling along the edge of the belt.”

Asha studied another display.

“It emitted a short burst when one of our survey drones passed within range.”

Dinraal looked sharply at her.

“An identification response?”

“A distress beacon. The drone did not answer.”

“Good.”

Isolde moved closer to the projection.

“Could it have come from the original planetary survey?”

“Different construction,” Eve said. “And there’s significant surface wear. It has been here much longer than our recent probes.”

Arcturus indicated a point well outside the fleet’s main position.

“We can have a remote tug move it to an isolated inspection orbit.”

Dinraal studied the battered object.

Something made by people.

Here before them.

For the first time since landing, the system felt occupied by a history they had not considered.

“Do it.”

They watched the recovery from the flagship.

Dinraal disliked standing still while machines performed the work.

He disliked the possibility of carrying something dangerous toward their new home more.

The tug approached slowly. Mechanical arms closed around the probe’s central body, stopping its tumble before towing it away from the belt.

No new transmission followed.

No stars disappeared.

Eve looked faintly irritated when Gilgamesh observed this aloud.

“That remains the expected behavior of stars.”

“Recently,” he said, “I have found them unreliable.”

She could not entirely disagree.

The inspection took hours.

The probe contained no living material. Its power source had nearly exhausted itself. Most of its instruments had been destroyed by impacts or the long exposure to space.

One memory unit remained intact.

Asha stared at the result.

“Of course it’s the difficult one to remove.”

Aramaeis leaned over her shoulder.

“That housing has a manual release beneath the rear plate.”

She looked up.

“You recognize it?”

“I recognize the design.”

“Could you point it out?”

He did.

Asha altered the remote tool’s position.

The housing opened.

She stared at the display.

Then at him.

“You’re staying.”

Aramaeis’s mouth twitched.

“I suspected as much.”

By the time they returned to the surface, evening had settled over the camp.

The probe’s memory unit remained in orbit with Eve and a small technical team. Copies of its readable contents had been transferred through an isolated system after inspection.

There was very little.

Instrument logs.

Fragments of a route.

A survey designation.

And a voice entry recorded before the probe had been launched.

They gathered in the research shelter.

Asha started the audio.

A woman spoke through a low hiss of damaged sound.

“Independent recorder seven. Navigation officer Sera Venn, survey vessel Orison.”

A pause.

Something rattled in the background.

“If this unit is recovered, the attached observations should be forwarded without alteration.”

The woman drew a breath.

“We have left the scheduled route. Captain’s authority. The contact has appeared at three projected exit positions.”

Tiamat’s hand tightened around the edge of her chair.

Dinraal noticed.

So did Aramaeis.

On the recording, the woman continued.

“The fourth transition was made from a locally generated solution. No destination exchange with the relay network.”

Static swallowed several words.

Then—

“No contact at emergence.”

Asha paused the recording.

Nobody spoke immediately.

Arcturus leaned forward.

“Play that again.”

She did.

No contact at emergence.

Dinraal felt Isolde move closer beside him.

The recording resumed.

“Deploying passive recorders along the withdrawal path. We cannot establish whether the route change, relay silence, or transit interval caused the separation.”

The woman’s voice faltered.

When she spoke again, she sounded very tired.

“Captain intends to continue outward. We have insufficient supplies to return through the surveyed corridor.”

A noise in the background.

Someone calling her name.

“Recorder release in ten seconds. Venn, ending entry.”

The audio stopped.

The research shelter seemed unusually quiet.

Outside, a vehicle passed along the supply road.

Dinraal looked at the blank display.

“Did they survive?”

Asha shook her head.

“This unit doesn’t tell us.”

Tiamat stood.

For an instant, Dinraal thought she would leave.

Instead, she approached the screen.

“Three exit positions,” she said.

Aramaeis rose beside her.

“Yes.”

“She changed something. And it wasn’t waiting.”

“We need the attached observations,” Arcturus said.

“Eve is recovering them,” Asha replied.

Dinraal stared at the woman’s name.

Sera Venn.

Until a few minutes ago, none of them had known she existed.

Now she had given them something they badly needed.

A recorded escape.

They worked late.

Eve joined by projection from orbit.

The recovered navigation logs were incomplete, but enough remained to confirm that the Orison had crossed the outer edge of their new system long ago.

It had not visited the fourth planet.

It had not stopped.

The probe had been released during withdrawal and gradually settled into the path where their drone found it.

“We cannot yet prove their contact was the Questioner,” Eve said. “But the repeated interceptions resemble Tiamat’s experience.”

“And the station record?” Aurelius asked.

“Potentially related. The Orison’s crew had been exchanging route data through the same generation of relay network.”

Isolde looked toward the map.

“What happened to that network?”

“Most of it went dark,” Arcturus said. “Some nodes were destroyed. Others disappeared from later surveys.”

Dinraal remembered the station receiving a response before sending its challenge.

“Could something have been listening through it?”

Asha nodded slowly.

“That is one possibility.”

“Or affecting the timing of information moving through it,” Eve added. “We need more evidence before we choose an explanation.”

Arcturus brought up the fleet’s current routes.

“Our couriers already carry their full plans locally. They don’t depend on that old network.”

“Good,” Dinraal said.

“But the Imperial archives may contain ships that still use inherited route tables and automated relay procedures,” Aurelius said.

Arcturus looked at him.

“I’ll prepare a recommendation.”

Tiamat remained near the display.

For once, she asked more questions than anyone else.

What had the Orison changed first?

How long had it waited?

Was its final destination selected before or after leaving the relay corridor?

Asha recorded each question.

Dinraal watched his uncle quietly move a chair beside Tiamat.

This time, when she sat, she leaned forward.

The next day, Aurelius called a different meeting.

They used the unfinished common hall.

Its walls stood, but one end remained open to the afternoon air. Chairs had been borrowed from three shelters. Several people stood along the back.

Dinraal expected a discussion of supply schedules.

Then Aurelius placed the settlement map on the table.

“We need a local council.”

Julius nodded as though they had discussed this already.

Cleopatra certainly looked unsurprised.

Dinraal glanced at Isolde.

She gave him a small smile.

“You could have warned me,” he murmured.

“You might have tried to carry something heavy elsewhere.”

Aurelius continued.

“The expedition command can manage ships and security. Daily life here requires people who are present, who know the work, and who can be approached without requesting a military briefing.”

Halen folded his arms.

“That sounds sensible.”

“It also sounds like work,” Meret said.

“It is,” Cleopatra replied.

Nessa looked toward Dinraal.

“And who makes the final decisions?”

He considered the question carefully.

“On the settlement’s daily needs? The people responsible for them, together. If a decision affects the fleet or everyone’s safety, we discuss it with command.”

“And if you disagree?”

Several faces turned toward him.

Dinraal rested his hands on the table.

“Then I explain why.”

Halen waited.

Dinraal understood the unspoken part.

“I don’t want every disagreement settled by people wondering what I can do with the silver.”

The room grew still.

Beside him, Isolde spoke.

“We asked you to help build this place. That should include how it works.”

Nessa nodded first.

Then Meret.

The discussion lasted until the light shifted across the floor.

By the end, they had agreed on a provisional council, shared responsibility for supplies, and a public meeting every seventh evening.

They had also discovered that the settlement needed a name.

Julius looked almost relieved.

“Finally. I’m tired of writing Surface Camp Four.”

Gilgamesh leaned forward.

“I have a suggestion.”

“No,” Cleopatra said.

“You haven’t heard it.”

“I watched you prepare to say it.”

A ripple of laughter moved through the room.

Aurelius raised a hand.

“Let everyone submit suggestions. We can decide at the first public meeting.”

Dinraal looked around the unfinished hall.

People were still talking as they rose.

Arguing, even.

One wanted the school placed closer to the housing. Another offered to build benches if someone found suitable material. Meret was explaining to Halen why his proposed workshop could not share a wall with a water tank.

They lingered because the decisions mattered to them.

Dinraal found himself smiling.

Isolde found him later near the ridge.

He had walked only far enough to see the settlement as a whole.

The river caught the evening light below. Smoke from the kitchen’s cooking vent rose in a thin line before the wind carried it away.

She came to stand beside him.

“What are you looking at?”

“The common hall.”

“It needs a roof on the western end.”

“I noticed.”

“And benches.”

“I’ve heard.”

She slipped her hand into his.

He looked down at their rings.

“Would you help lead the council?”

Isolde considered it.

“I’d like to help with the school and housing. People need somewhere to bring concerns before those concerns become emergencies.”

“You’d be good at it.”

“I think I could be.”

He liked the certainty in her voice.

“What about you?” she asked.

He looked toward the sky.

“We need to learn more about what followed us.”

“Yes.”

“But I want to be here too.”

She waited.

“I don’t want you building our life while I’m always somewhere else protecting the idea of it.”

Isolde leaned against him.

“Then we make the decisions together. When you need to go, we talk. When you need to stay, we talk about that too.”

He kissed her hair.

“That sounds manageable.”

“It will occasionally be inconvenient.”

“I married a very honest woman.”

“You were warned in front of witnesses.”

They were almost back at their quarters when Asha’s message arrived.

Dinraal stopped beneath one of the path lights.

Isolde read it over his shoulder.

Eve recovered the final attached map. Come to the lab.

Inside, the researchers had darkened the room.

A route glowed above the table.

The Orison’s journey bent away from the old relay corridor and crossed their system before continuing outward.

Beyond it lay a small cluster of stars.

One had been marked.

Dinraal approached.

“What is that?”

“A planned rendezvous,” Eve said through the projection. “It appears in a private navigation note.”

“Another survey vessel?”

Asha shook her head.

“We don’t know.”

She enlarged the annotation.

Most of it consisted of damaged coordinates.

Beneath them, six words remained legible.

ARCHIVE ANCHORAGE. NO RELAY CONTACT REQUIRED.

Aramaeis stood very still.

Dinraal turned toward him.

“Uncle?”

His eyes did not leave the map.

“I’ve heard that term before.”

Asha lowered her tablet.

“Where?”

Aramaeis drew a slow breath.

“Before everything fell apart. There were repositories built to preserve records outside the main networks.”

“Imperial?” Aurelius asked.

“Some. Others were older.”

Dinraal looked back at the distant star.

“If the Orison reached it—”

“They may have left more than a probe,” Isolde finished.

Eve moved the map aside to reveal a second fragment.

“There’s one other thing.”

A set of characters appeared.

A date.

Aramaeis stepped closer.

This time, the change in his expression was unmistakable.

“What?” Dinraal asked.

His uncle looked toward him.

“The notation beside the anchorage.”

Dinraal waited.

“I saw that mark on Silver Army records.”

The room fell silent.

Outside, the settlement’s evening bell sounded, calling the last work crews to supper.

Aramaeis reached toward the projection.

“If that archive still exists,” he said, “we may finally have somewhere to ask.”
