The spike appeared while Asha was arguing with a star.

More precisely, she was arguing with the catalog that insisted the star belonged somewhere else.

Eve had already suggested checking the age of the survey.

Asha had done that.

Then she had checked the instrument calibration, the recorded wavelength, and the possibility that Neral’s damaged recorder had confused two neighboring sources.

The star remained stubbornly misplaced.

Now an entire section of the display turned white.

Asha stopped speaking.

Eve looked up.

For a moment, both women watched the instruments.

Then Asha said, very quietly, “That is considerably worse.”

Dinraal arrived expecting an alarm.

Instead, he found six people gathered around a display, none apparently willing to be the first to explain it.

Isolde came in behind him.

“What happened?”

Eve moved aside.

A distant region of space filled the screen.

Most of it was poorly mapped. Survey lines ended halfway through it. A handful of stars possessed numbers instead of names.

Near the edge, a small point burned with the intensity of something much larger.

“A huge energy spike,” Asha said. “The deep-range scanners picked it up while we were checking the candidate regions.”

“The Questioner?”

“We don’t think so.”

Dinraal studied her face.

Asha was worried.

She was also unmistakably fascinated.

“How far away?”

“Far enough that it has nothing to do with the carrier’s present position,” Eve said. “We’re still refining the distance.”

“What produced it?” Isolde asked.

Asha enlarged the source.

A star.

Several orbital tracks.

One inhabited-sized world.

“A planet,” she said.

Dinraal stared at the little sphere.

“Which planet?”

“That’s the problem. We’ve never heard of it.”

The first explanation was an instrument fault.

The second was a stellar event badly located by the scanners.

Both lasted only until the independent arrays confirmed the reading.

Whatever had happened, it had happened near the planet.

Around it, the measurements separated into several overlapping signatures.

One blazed with heat.

Another carried an almost impossible electrical intensity.

A third made the local distance estimates slide out of agreement.

There were others.

Too many for Asha to distinguish cleanly.

Gilgamesh arrived halfway through the discussion, carrying a piece of bread.

He watched the display.

Watched Asha add another warning marker.

Then took a bite.

“Must be a lot of gods going to war with each other or something.”

Nobody answered immediately.

Dinraal turned toward him.

“That’s your explanation?”

Gilgamesh gestured with the bread.

“Have you got a better one?”

Asha opened her mouth.

Closed it.

“I have several less interesting ones.”

On the display, the burning signatures collided.

For an instant, one side of the planet’s surrounding field brightened with a storm of pale light.

Then the whole reading fell sharply.

Isolde stepped closer.

“Did the planet—”

“It’s still there,” Eve said.

She checked another instrument.

“Still there. Still intact.”

Everyone breathed a little more easily.

Gilgamesh finished his bread.

“There. Someone won.”

The scanners had caught more than energy.

A few fragments of local transmission had reached the array alongside the surge, scattered and badly distorted.

Most were unusable.

One contained music.

Another sounded like a crowd.

A third yielded two names after several attempts at translation.

Greykeep.

Concordia.

Dinraal read them from Asha’s tablet.

“Cities?”

“Possibly,” she said. “Kingdoms. Regions. The fragments don’t give us much.”

Aramaeis stood beside the door.

“Do they mean anything to you?”

“No.”

“To the archive?”

“Not in the index we have.”

Tiamat looked at the fading signatures.

“The storm reading is still there.”

“And the heat source,” Eve said. “Both much lower.”

Gilgamesh folded his arms.

“I stand by my explanation.”

Asha made a note.

Dinraal leaned sideways.

“What are you writing?”

“Unclassified event.”

“Not gods?”

“I’m trying to remain employable.”

Isolde smiled.

Dinraal looked once more at the little world.

Somewhere far beyond their charts, people had apparently survived a terrible day.

He hoped they were finding one another.

“Mark it for later study,” he said. “Passive observation only. We have enough unanswered questions nearby.”

Asha nodded.

For once, she did not argue.

The strange event helped them solve a different problem.

They had redirected several distant arrays to confirm the spike. In doing so, they gathered sharper measurements of the surrounding stars.

Neral found the match late that evening.

She stood at the navigation table, one hand resting on its edge.

“I have it.”

Eve looked up from a report.

“The planet?”

“No.”

Neral turned the display.

“The carrier’s destination.”

A cluster of stars appeared.

Then the pattern reconstructed from the Far Lantern’s hidden recorder.

One settled over the other.

Not perfectly.

But closely enough that Eve put down her tablet.

Asha crossed the room.

Nobody spoke while she adjusted for the recorder’s known errors.

The match held.

Neral sat down slowly.

“There,” she said again.

For the first time, the place beyond the opening had coordinates.

It lay beyond the old Imperial survey corridor.

Not in another universe.

Not outside every map they possessed.

Simply very far away, in a region few ships had reason to visit.

Dinraal found that almost more unsettling.

The distance could be measured.

It could be crossed.

The Questioner had made the journey seem impossible by doing it differently.

Alexander examined the route.

“Four long jumps. A resupply stop before the final approach.”

“How long?” Dinraal asked.

“With a properly equipped scout, several days to reach the outer system. Longer to make a careful survey and return.”

Arcturus looked toward Eve.

“Can we approach without using any of its openings?”

“Yes.”

That single answer changed the room.

Aramaeis came closer to the table.

“Then we don’t need to follow the carrier through.”

“No,” Isolde said.

Dinraal studied the long route.

Four jumps.

Fuel.

Navigation.

Ordinary problems, however difficult.

“Prepare a scout mission.”

Alexander nodded.

“Two vessels. Separate return plans.”

“And no approach to the structure,” Arcturus added. “We need eyes, not a boarding action.”

Dinraal agreed.

The unknown curve remained on the display.

They would find out what it was before deciding what to do with it.

Neral volunteered before the briefing ended.

“No,” Johanna said.

The navigator turned.

“You haven’t heard what I’m volunteering for.”

“I watched your face when the route appeared.”

“I know the measurements.”

“You also still become dizzy if you stand too quickly.”

Neral looked irritated.

Johanna remained unmoved.

“I can navigate sitting down.”

“And if the ship loses gravity?”

A silence followed.

Dinraal kept carefully out of it.

Isolde was less cautious.

“Could she prepare the route and train the scout navigators?”

Johanna considered that.

Neral folded her arms.

“I suppose I could do that.”

“Here,” Johanna said.

“Yes.”

“With breaks.”

Neral sighed.

Asha, who had suffered similar negotiations, looked deeply sympathetic.

Johanna noticed.

“You can help her.”

Asha’s sympathy became resignation.

The scouts departed two days later.

Dinraal watched from the observation deck with Neral beside him.

The two vessels looked small against the planet.

They carried extra fuel, passive instruments, and crews selected for patience.

Neral held a cup she had forgotten to drink from.

“I should be aboard.”

“You gave them the route.”

“I know.”

“And three alternative approaches.”

“Four.”

Dinraal glanced at her.

“The fourth is in the supplementary notes,” she said.

He smiled faintly.

For a while, they watched the ships pull away.

Then Neral said, “Dessa would have liked this.”

“The recorder?”

“All of it. Finding something they didn’t mean to give us.”

Dinraal nodded.

The scouts vanished into transit.

Neral finally lifted her cup.

The tea had gone cold.

She drank it anyway.

While they waited, Hearth acquired its first proper fountain.

It was not decorative.

Meret made that extremely clear.

“It’s a public water point.”

Gilgamesh examined the stone basin.

“Water comes out of the top.”

“Yes.”

“Falls into the bottom.”

“Yes.”

“A fountain.”

“A public water point.”

Dinraal stood nearby with a shovel, having been persuaded that helping finish the trench would be more useful than asking when it would be finished.

Isolde worked a few paces away.

She looked up.

“Could it be both?”

Meret considered the basin with visible reluctance.

“Provided nobody throws anything into it.”

At that exact moment, a child dropped a small stone into the water.

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at the widening ripples.

Then at Meret.

“For luck?”

Gilgamesh turned away.

His shoulders began to shake.

The work left Dinraal tired in an unfamiliar way.

His back did not ache.

The silver could have moved the entire trench’s worth of soil in moments.

But Meret needed careful grading around buried pipes, and Halen had already explained that raw enthusiasm was not a construction method.

So Dinraal used the shovel.

He listened.

He moved when told.

By late afternoon, the new houses had water.

An elderly woman from the Lantern turned on a tap inside the first completed kitchen.

She let it run over her fingers.

Then she began to cry.

Meret looked alarmed.

“Is it too cold?”

The woman laughed through the tears.

“No.”

Dinraal stood in the doorway.

He remembered her asking whether the water line would still be built.

Now she turned the tap off and on again, apparently just because she could.

Isolde slipped her hand into his.

They stayed until the woman had finished trying every fixture in the house.

Voss asked to see the names.

Johanna brought the request to Aramaeis first.

“What names?”

“The people recovered from the survey vessel. He heard me discussing a medical transfer with the guard.”

Aramaeis’s expression hardened.

“He was not supposed to hear operational details.”

“He heard that seven people were recovering. Nothing about the ship or the route.”

“And now he wants names.”

“Yes.”

They spoke to the survivors before answering him.

Several refused.

Two agreed to let him know they were alive.

One sent a message.

Aramaeis carried it into the observation room on a folded sheet.

Voss sat opposite him, pale structures visible beneath the loose collar of his shirt.

“What does it say?”

Aramaeis placed it against the glass.

Tell him I remember who signed the transfer.

Voss read it.

His eyes closed.

Aramaeis waited.

At last, Voss said, “He’s alive.”

“Yes.”

A small breath left him.

It might have been relief.

It might have been something less generous.

Aramaeis watched his face.

“You can be glad he survived,” he said. “He does not have to make that easier for you.”

Voss opened his eyes.

For once, he had no reply.

On the fourth day after the scouts departed, the first courier returned.

It carried a navigation confirmation.

The outer system existed where the reconstruction predicted.

Its primary was old and dim.

The surrounding planets appeared lifeless at a distance.

The scouts had separated according to plan.

One was continuing toward the inner system.

The other was surveying from above the orbital plane.

No contact had been attempted.

Dinraal read the report at the kitchen table.

Isolde sat opposite him, sorting seeds into little labeled envelopes.

“Good news?”

“The route works.”

“That is good news.”

“Yes.”

He set down the report.

She glanced at him.

“You’re allowed to want the next message.”

“I’m trying not to want it every minute.”

“How is that going?”

“Poorly.”

She passed him an empty envelope.

“Then help.”

He took the pencil.

“What am I writing?”

“The name on the packet.”

He looked at the seeds.

Then at the long, complicated plant name.

“The Questioner may be less difficult.”

“Your handwriting only has to frighten the insects.”

The second courier arrived at dawn two days later.

Alexander sent for them immediately.

Dinraal dressed without speaking.

Isolde was ready first.

They reached the operations room to find the others already gathering.

The display remained dark.

Alexander stood beside it with one hand resting on the controls.

“Both scouts remain intact,” he said before anyone could ask. “This recording came back with the first vessel. The second is maintaining distant observation.”

Dinraal nodded.

“Show us.”

The screen filled with stars.

Then an old, reddish sun appeared near the edge.

The view turned.

Something vast crossed the lower half of the image.

At first, Dinraal thought he was looking at debris around a moon.

Then the scale markers appeared.

The structure stretched for thousands of kilometers.

A broken arc of metal and stone surrounded a dark central region. Docking spars projected from it at intervals. Some were shattered. Others carried shapes too large to be ordinary ships.

Lights moved along the surviving sections.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Aramaeis stepped closer.

Asha said nothing at all.

The scout’s image sharpened.

Along the inner edge of the arc stood rings.

Dozens of them.

Some whole.

Some incomplete.

One held a darkness that did not match the space behind it.

A small vessel approached that ring.

The surface changed.

The vessel disappeared.

Dinraal felt Isolde’s hand close around his.

They had found the place beyond the crossings.

The next images were worse.

Not because of the weapons.

Because of the ships.

Imperial hulls lay secured to several docking arms.

Freighters.

Survey craft.

A passenger liner with half its lights still burning.

Among them rested vessels of shapes Dinraal had never seen.

Some looked old enough to belong in Aramaeis’s memories.

Others looked older.

“Can we tell how many are occupied?” Johanna asked.

Alexander shook his head.

“The scouts stayed too far out.”

“Signals?”

“Some. None directed toward us.”

Eve brought up a selection of measurements.

Heat.

Power.

Movement.

Life support signatures in places that should have been dead.

Dinraal looked at the passenger liner.

He wanted its name.

Its manifest.

A number he could hold in his mind.

The image gave him none.

Then the scout turned toward the structure’s center.

Several enormous lines extended inward from the arc.

They vanished into darkness.

Not empty space.

A surface.

Curved.

Vast.

For a moment, something beneath it shifted.

The scout’s instruments lost their distance readings.

The crew immediately began withdrawal.

Nobody in the operations room objected to that decision.

The recording ended.

Daylight had begun reaching the windows.

For several seconds, the ordinary room felt impossibly small.

Finally, Gilgamesh spoke.

“I preferred the planet with the gods.”

No one laughed loudly.

But a few people breathed again.

Dinraal looked at Alexander.

“Did anything follow?”

“No confirmed pursuit. The returning scout made the full separation route.”

“And the second vessel?”

“Staying beyond the outer planet. Its commander has orders to leave at the first sign of attention.”

Dinraal nodded.

Then he looked at the final still image.

The arc.

The rings.

The captive ships.

The darkness at the center.

“Is it a shipyard?” Tiamat asked.

“Partly,” Eve said.

“A prison,” Johanna added.

Aramaeis studied the great lines running inward.

“And something holding that.”

Dinraal turned toward him.

His uncle’s expression was grave.

“Holding it in place,” Aramaeis said. “Or holding it back.”

They could not yet tell which.

The fleet council did not authorize an attack.

There were too many unknowns.

Too many possible captives.

Too few ships to protect Hearth and strike blindly at something that large.

Instead, they assigned the work.

Identify the docking structures.

Compare the rings with the original contact apparatus.

Search the archive for the immense arc and the older vessels beside it.

Prepare supplies for a longer reconnaissance.

Contact the allied settlements through couriers and begin assembling a fuller account of missing ships.

Dinraal listened to each decision.

Then he added one of his own.

“We need a plan for the people aboard those vessels before we need a plan for destroying anything.”

Johanna nodded.

Alexander was already marking possible evacuation distances.

The work began.

By evening, the first identification appeared.

Eve found it in an old Imperial registry.

The passenger liner was the Summer Orchard.

Missing for twenty-six years.

Last reported with one thousand, one hundred and nine people aboard.

Dinraal stood beside the display as the registry photograph resolved.

Bright hull.

Open observation decks.

A line of passengers boarding beneath a sunlit terminal roof.

He looked from that picture to the scout’s distant image.

Half the lights still burned.

“Put her name on the map,” he said.

Eve did.

Beyond Hearth’s walls, people were finishing the day’s work.

Water ran in the new houses.

The garden at Dinraal’s home waited for planting.

Far away, on a world whose name they still did not know, the strange storm around Greykeep and Concordia had faded enough for the scanners to lose interest.

Here, the display held steady.

Summer Orchard.

Now they knew one place to begin.
