The scout returned with three clocks.

Two agreed.

The third was nine hours behind.

Dinraal stood beside the inspection table while Eve checked the seals on its housing.

“Damaged?”

“No visible damage.”

“Interference?”

“Possibly.”

Asha brought up the scout’s flight record.

The vessel had remained well beyond the shipyard. It had released an unmanned observation package, allowed it to drift along the outer edge of the damaged arc, then recovered it after withdrawal.

The package had been outside the ship for twelve hours.

Its own instruments had recorded three.

Isolde looked at the little clock.

“And the pictures?”

“Three hours of recording,” Asha said.

“Not twelve with a gap?”

“No gap. Continuous images.”

Dinraal turned toward the display.

A docking arm.

A section of broken hull.

A maintenance vessel moving slowly through the frame.

Nothing in the image looked hurried.

Nothing looked wrong.

That made it worse.

They watched the maintenance vessel cross the same patch of space from two different viewpoints.

On the scout’s distant recording, it took nearly forty minutes.

On the recovered package, it took ten.

Gilgamesh leaned forward.

“Could we stop saying the clocks are wrong?”

Eve nodded.

“I think we can.”

The room quieted.

Aramaeis stood near the rear wall, his arms folded.

Dinraal looked toward him.

His uncle was watching a distant ship in the recording.

It had a broad forward hull and two narrow structures extending behind it.

An old design.

Very old.

“How long has that ship been there?” Aramaeis asked.

“We don’t know,” Alexander said.

“How long for them?”

No one answered.

Asha stopped the recording.

The ancient vessel remained on the screen.

A single light burned near its bow.

The discrepancy did not extend throughout the shipyard.

That was the first useful finding.

The Summer Orchard’s former berth lay outside the strongest affected region. Farther inward, near the largest intact ring, the measurements became less reliable.

“Reliable instruments,” Enna said, studying the readings. “Unreliable distances between events.”

Asha glanced at her.

“That is unpleasantly accurate.”

Alexander marked the affected areas on the map.

“Our withdrawal orders need changing.”

Dinraal understood immediately.

“If a team is late, they may not know it.”

“And if they ask for ten more minutes,” Isolde said, “we might spend forty waiting.”

“Or more,” Eve replied. “We have one measured case. The survivor records suggest it varies.”

Arcturus looked around the table.

“No crewed entry into those sections until we understand the boundaries.”

Dinraal nodded.

There was no argument to make.

He looked back at the ancient ship.

Waiting might mean something different aboard it.

That did not make the people watching from outside any less responsible for what they did next.

Aramaeis remained after the others left.

Dinraal found him examining the frozen image.

“You recognize it.”

“The class.”

His uncle enlarged the forward hull.

Then reduced it again, as though a different distance might make the answer less difficult.

“It carried survey teams during the early war.”

“Silver Army?”

“Sometimes. Engineers. Evacuation coordinators. Whoever needed moving.”

“Could anyone still be aboard?”

Aramaeis looked at him.

Dinraal wished he had asked the question differently.

“I don’t know,” his uncle said.

A pause.

“I knew people who flew in ships like that.”

“We’ll identify it.”

“Do that before anyone tells the rest of us to hope.”

Dinraal stood beside him.

After a while, Aramaeis lowered his hand.

“I’m not angry with you.”

“I know.”

“I am rather angry that I can still want things this badly.”

Dinraal looked at the small light near the ship’s bow.

He had no answer that would make that easier.

So he stayed.

The fifth reference station entered service two days later.

Tiamat supervised the final handover.

Dinraal attended without touching the assembly.

That required more effort than he expected.

He watched a young operator bring the field into agreement with the neighboring stations. Another monitored the release system. A third stood ready to take over.

Tiamat moved between them.

“Don’t chase the fluctuation,” she said. “Let the measurement settle.”

The operator adjusted his breathing.

The wavering line steadied.

“There.”

Dinraal folded his arms to keep his hands occupied.

Isolde noticed.

She smiled but said nothing.

Through the window, the planet turned beneath them.

Five stations.

One still to finish.

Enough trained operators now that the protection did not vanish whenever Dinraal and Isolde left together.

Tiamat approached after the readings had held for the required interval.

“Well?”

“Good,” Dinraal said.

She raised an eyebrow.

“Only good?”

“Very good.”

“I’ll accept that.”

She looked toward the operators.

Then, more quietly, “They were frightened the first time.”

“And now?”

“Still frightened. They know what to do.”

Dinraal nodded.

He thought that was probably the best anyone could ask.

The first reply to Hadrin arrived that afternoon.

He tried to watch it alone.

He lasted until his sister appeared on the screen.

Then he called for someone to find Isolde.

By the time she and Dinraal reached his room, the recording had ended and Hadrin was staring at the blank display.

“Bad news?” Dinraal asked.

Hadrin shook his head.

He pressed play.

His sister sat in the same room full of ship models.

This time, her hands were folded so tightly that they trembled.

“You look terrible,” she said.

Hadrin laughed immediately.

On the screen, she wiped her eyes with visible irritation.

“I have watched your message nine times. I may watch it again before this one leaves.”

She drew a breath.

“I cannot make that journey at the moment. My physician has developed opinions about my heart, and apparently I am expected to listen.”

A small smile.

“But if you can come, there is a room.”

Hadrin pressed a hand against his mouth.

“It’s the little one,” she continued. “The larger room has the models in it, and I’m not moving them because you took your time coming home.”

Her voice failed on the last word.

For several seconds, she looked away from the recorder.

When she faced it again, she was no longer trying to sound composed.

“Please come.”

The recording ended.

Hadrin looked at Johanna’s written instructions on the table beside his bed.

Then at Dinraal.

“How many more examinations?”

“We’ll ask her.”

“And passage?”

“We’ll arrange it when you’re ready.”

Hadrin nodded several times.

Then he turned back to the screen.

“I think I’ll watch it again.”

The same courier brought three escort captains and an Imperial fabrication specialist.

The false evacuation orders had frightened the scattered settlements.

The rescue reports had persuaded them that remaining isolated would not keep them safe.

Now they had sent ships.

Not many.

More than Hearth had possessed the week before.

Arcturus met the captains in the assembly hall. Cleopatra joined them with fuel schedules and the expression she wore when an offer of help might actually survive contact with arithmetic.

Dinraal arrived halfway through.

One captain was pointing to the route between two colonies.

“We can cover that section. Our drive is slow, but we can remain on station longer than your couriers.”

Another offered repair crews.

The fabrication specialist opened a case of component samples.

“For the reference assemblies. We’ve reproduced the mechanical housings from your drawings.”

Enna picked one up.

Turned it.

Checked the release channel.

“This could work.”

The specialist looked relieved.

Dinraal stood at the back of the room and listened.

No one asked him to decide where every vessel should go.

No one needed him to carry every component into place.

Across the table, Aurelius caught his eye.

He smiled.

Dinraal smiled back.

Sovan returned to the research room on the fourth day.

She had spent the morning helping repair a water pump.

The pump was small.

Its failure threatened a vegetable bed rather than several hundred lives.

She had enjoyed herself enormously.

Now she put a folded diagram beside Eve’s tablet.

“I remembered something.”

Eve moved her work aside.

Sovan pointed to a section of the arc.

“Here. Behind the transfer platforms.”

“What is it?”

“A service gallery. We were taken there to replace thermal controls.”

Asha leaned over the drawing.

“Inside the region where the clocks disagree?”

“Near the edge.”

Dinraal came closer.

“Do people live there?”

“Maintenance crews were kept in the outer rooms. Different crews at different times.”

“How many?”

“I saw perhaps thirty. There may have been more behind the other doors.”

“Were they brought back to ships?”

“Some were.”

She did not finish the thought.

Isolde rested a hand on the table.

“What made you remember today?”

Sovan tapped the water-pump diagram she had brought with her.

“A bypass valve. The gallery had one too. We were told never to open it.”

Enna studied the rough lines.

“A coolant bypass?”

“That’s what I thought. But it didn’t lead around the cooling system.”

“Where did it lead?”

Sovan drew another line.

Toward the center.

Toward the great darkness suspended inside the arc.

They found the same arrangement in the oldest recording.

Not the same machinery.

The same relationship between its parts.

The little contact chamber.

The black sphere.

The ring of instruments.

Asha placed Sovan’s sketch beside a surviving diagram from the recovered storage cartridges.

“This branch,” she said.

Eve adjusted the translation.

Several symbols repeated.

A control.

A limit.

A return path.

Dinraal read the proposed meanings.

“They were regulating what came through.”

“Or how much of a connection they allowed,” Eve said.

Aramaeis stood behind them.

“And the arc?”

No one answered immediately.

Then Asha enlarged the shipyard model.

The outer rings.

The great lines reaching inward.

The central darkness.

She placed the old apparatus beside it.

The smaller machine had been built to make contact.

The larger structure had been added around something already there.

Aramaeis’s eyes narrowed.

“That was built afterward.”

Eve nodded slowly.

“The architecture is consistent with that.”

Dinraal looked from one to the other.

“After containment failed.”

“Possibly.”

Isolde studied the immense arc.

“Then some of it may have been built to close the opening.”

The idea made every proposed attack more dangerous.

It also gave them a reason to look beyond the structures the Questioner actively used.

There were old sections of the arc whose lights never came on.

Broken galleries.

Sealed chambers.

Machinery that the captives had been told to avoid.

Aramaeis pointed to one such section.

“If someone tried to contain it, they would have needed controls outside the area they were trying to close.”

“Somewhere they could still reach,” Enna said.

“Yes.”

Asha examined the scout images.

The inactive gallery lay near the largest ring, but on its outer side.

A narrow bridge joined it to the maintenance rooms Sovan remembered.

Dinraal looked at Alexander.

“We need better images of that section.”

Alexander nodded.

“The next observation package can approach from above the arc. No crew aboard.”

Sovan touched the edge of her drawing.

“There’s another thing.”

Everyone waited.

“The attendants didn’t go through the old door.”

“Wouldn’t or couldn’t?” Isolde asked.

“I don’t know.”

“What did they do?”

“They made us carry the replacement parts in. Then they waited outside.”

The probe took four days to reach the shipyard aboard the new scout rotation.

Four days in which Hearth kept building.

The new escorts began their first patrols.

The agricultural crew planted another field.

Mira attended lessons beneath an awning and corrected a younger child’s drawing of a bird with considerable authority.

Hadrin passed his medical examinations.

His departure was set for the next escorted convoy.

Dinraal helped him carry a wooden box to the staging storehouse.

Inside lay clothes, the rescued shears, and a bundle of seed packets.

“You’re taking work to your sister’s house?”

“She has a garden.”

“Does she know you’re planning to change it?”

Hadrin looked at him.

“She’ll tell me everything I’ve done wrong.”

“You seem pleased.”

“I’ve missed it.”

At the storehouse door, Hadrin stopped.

His hand rested on the lid of the box.

“I don’t know what happens when I get there.”

Dinraal waited.

“We’ve both had twenty-six years. We won’t fit back where we were.”

“No.”

Hadrin looked toward the waiting ships.

Then he lifted his end of the box.

“Well. We can move the furniture.”

The probe returned intact.

Its clock had lost seventeen minutes.

Its images showed the service gallery.

Thirty-two heat signatures occupied the adjoining maintenance rooms.

Beyond them lay a sealed door.

Old.

Scarred.

Unconnected to the pale additions spreading through the rest of the shipyard.

Above it, beneath layers of dust, a symbol had been cut into the wall.

Aramaeis saw it before Asha enlarged the image.

“Stop.”

Dinraal turned.

His uncle approached the display very slowly.

The symbol consisted of three lines enclosed by an incomplete circle.

Nothing elaborate.

Nothing that should have made his face change that way.

“You know it?” Isolde asked.

Aramaeis nodded.

“What does it mean?”

“Closure station.”

Asha looked back at the old translation.

“The kind used to shut a breach?”

“Yes.”

Dinraal watched his uncle.

“Have you seen one?”

“Training diagrams. Ruins. Never an intact control room.”

He pointed to the closed door.

“That marking means the mechanism can be operated locally.”

Silence settled over the room.

For the first time, the structure offered something more specific than a place to fight.

A door.

A purpose.

Perhaps a way to close what should never have remained open.

Then the probe’s image moved.

A maintenance worker entered the frame.

He carried a box against his hip.

An attendant followed him as far as the old threshold.

Stopped.

The worker set down the box and touched a recessed panel beside the door.

Nothing happened.

The attendant gestured.

The man tried again.

Still nothing.

Finally, he picked up the box and retreated.

The attendant struck him across the shoulders.

Dinraal’s hand closed.

On the screen, the man staggered but did not fall.

They left together.

Asha stopped the recording.

Isolde looked toward Aramaeis.

“Why couldn’t he open it?”

His uncle stared at the recessed panel.

Then raised his silver-covered hand.

Dinraal felt the room tighten around him.

“The station was built for our engineers,” Aramaeis said.

His voice was quiet.

“It may still be waiting for one.”

That night, Dinraal found Isolde in the garden.

She was kneeling beside the second bed, pressing earth around the seedlings.

He crouched beside her.

“Any room for help?”

She handed him a small trowel.

They worked until the fading light made the rows difficult to see.

Then she sat back on her heels.

“You’re thinking about the door.”

“Yes.”

“So am I.”

He looked at the dirt on his hands.

“If it works—”

“We find out what it closes,” she said.

He nodded.

“Before we touch it.”

“Yes.”

“And the maintenance crews.”

“We bring supplies. A way to keep them alive if the machinery stops.”

She brushed soil from her fingers.

For a moment, she looked toward the kitchen window.

Their table stood inside.

A lamp burned beside the open notebook.

Then she turned back to him.

“We’ve gotten better at this.”

“At gardening?”

“At remembering there has to be an afterward.”

Dinraal set down the trowel.

He took her hand, dirt and all.

Across the garden, the First Weapon had fallen asleep beside the gate.

Beyond the roofs, the first stars appeared.

In a distant system, an old door remained closed.

For now, they had time to decide how to approach it.
