For at least a decade, no one had dared to cause trouble for the three great Red Nobility families in Forty-Nine City, let alone directly kill a blood descendant of the Old Sunx Family. So, everyone was waiting for the spectacle! They were waiting to see how the Sunx Family would make the murderer pay, but now…

He was actually released without charge? Was this a joke? How was that possible?

”Hey, have you guys heard? That fellow from the other day was released without charge.”

”Who…” He took a sharp breath. ”Are you talking about the guy who killed Sunx Long? Impossible. The Sunx Family was slapped so hard across the face, yet he was released without charge? Are they willing to let it go just like that?”

”For so many years, who has dared to cause trouble for the three great Red Nobility families? If a precedent like this is set, the fighting will never end! How could he possibly be released without charge?”

”It’s not that exaggerated. The main issue is that with his release, wasn’t the Sunx Family just brutally slapped in the face?”

”I think there’s more to this than meets the eye. Otherwise, given the Sunx Family’s status and power, how could they allow something like this to happen? Hasn’t anyone noticed that the Sunx Family hasn’t made a single peep, as if nothing happened at all?”

Clearly, the way this matter unfolded had completely surpassed the expectations of all the onlookers.

This was the Old Sunx Family, one of the top Red Nobility families in Forty-Nine City, and now blood had been shed. Even though the deceased was just an unimportant fourth-generation descendant, they couldn’t just let the murderer be ’released without charge’ so casually, could they? It was a stark contrast to the purge over a decade ago, a clean-up that shook the entire Republic! And now…

In that moment, anyone with half a brain could guess that Young Master Sunx Long must have offended some supremely powerful figure! Or perhaps his opponent had some kind of leverage, which was the only reason the great Sunx Family would be so passive, even choosing to turn a blind eye.

Otherwise, given the Sunx Family’s influence in Forty-Nine City, not to mention the entire Republic, why would they ever adopt such a self-humiliating approach? To be trampled on without fighting back was utterly humiliating!

But because both the Sunx Family and the Central Guard Bureau remained tight-lipped, and because outsiders—no matter how wild their imaginations—could never guess that a titan like Old Man Huang Xing had personally intervened, none of the onlookers’ speculation brought them any closer to the truth.

Even so, many intelligent or cautious officials and families began warning their children and relatives not to carelessly cross the person responsible. If even the Old Sunx Family had stumbled, they were nothing in comparison.

Of course, these were later developments, which we will not dwell on for now.

After his phone call with Sunx Qinian, Old Man Huang Xing immediately ordered Chen Fei’s release and met with him.

”Elder Huang,” Chen Fei said, naturally a bit surprised to see Old Man Huang Xing again.

”Heh heh, Young Chen, we meet again,” Old Man Huang Xing teased with a wink. ”So, after a few days in lockup, what are your thoughts? Have you gained a profound understanding of your mistakes and reflected on them? It’s much better to be amicable with people, why resort to fighting and killing all the time?”

For an organization like the Central Guard Bureau, it was actually quite rare to lock up a little monster of his caliber, a little deviant like Chen Fei. As the first director of the Central Guard Bureau, even though he had retired to a behind-the-scenes role, he couldn’t help but feel a little excited in such situations. It was purely a professional habit.

”I may not have a profound understanding or any regrets, but that place was certainly interesting. It’s full of talented people...” Chen Fei couldn’t help but roll his eyes, then a strange smile touched his lips.

”What nonsense are you spouting now?” Seeing the peculiar smile on Chen Fei’s face, it was Old Man Huang Xing’s turn to roll his eyes. He said, exasperated, ”Don’t you go learning from those guys in there. They’re a cunning lot, full of tricks. They’ll sell you out, and you’ll still be helping them count the money. A young man like you can’t outfox those old timers.”

”Don’t worry, Elder Huang, I’m not that stupid. By the way… do you have any news about Luo Zun?” Chen Fei nodded and then suddenly asked.

”Luo Zun?” Hearing this, Old Man Huang Xing’s expression changed slightly, his tone growing serious. ”Why are you still thinking about him? Wasn’t he taken away by the Black Demon Palace?”

”That may be true, but to me, that guy will always be a threat, a ticking time bomb,” Chen Fei said slowly, his dark eyes, as clear as polished crystal, flashing. ”And with that old man’s vengeful nature, he’ll definitely come after me if he gets the ability or the chance. I’d rather not have him suddenly show up at my door seeking revenge one day!”

Old Man Huang Xing fell silent for a moment before shaking his head. ”Don’t worry. Now that he has gone over to that side, it’s normally very difficult for him to come back here. It costs a great deal to cross over from their side. Even for… Well, you don’t need to know about that for now.”

”A great deal?”

Hearing Old Man Huang Xing mention this, Chen Fei’s mind immediately started racing. He was now absolutely certain that, besides the secular world, there had to be another, higher-level place—or perhaps more than one—on Earth where Qi Practitioners resided. But since Old Man Huang Xing was unwilling to elaborate, he didn’t press the matter. After all, once his Cultivation Level increased, would he need to worry about not having an opportunity to go there?

With this thought, a smile spread across his face. ”Elder Huang, since I’m out now, does that mean the issue with the Sunx Family is resolved?”

”Yes, it’s pretty much been handled. But you should take it easy from now on, young man. It’s best if you don’t make a move in Forty-Nine City. Otherwise, if you attract the attention of the other three of the ’Four Departments of Capital City’, it will be very troublesome!”

The Four Departments of Capital City were originally established to prevent overly bold individuals from running wild in Forty-Nine City. This was especially true for those with high Cultivation Levels and great strength; they could not be allowed to cause chaos at the foot of the Imperial City! Once such a precedent was set, the consequences would be far more severe than anyone could imagine.

This was why something that could have been resolved with a single word from him or Old Master Xuu had to go through such a convoluted process of arresting him first, only to release him without charge. It was all based on this principle, this bottom line.

”Yes, Elder Huang. I’ll be more careful in the future,” Chen Fei said, promptly nodding in respect. He understood the old man was looking out for him.

”Alright, you can go. Oh, right, Chief Xuu asked me to tell you to head straight to his place after you leave,” Old Man Huang Xing said with a satisfied nod, suddenly adding the instruction.

”Grandpa Xuu? Alright, I understand. I’ll head over there in a bit,” Chen Fei nodded.

With that, he left the Central Guard Bureau. Perhaps because he had just been ’released’, Old Man Huang Xing’s side felt it was inappropriate to send a car for him. So, Chen Fei hailed a taxi himself and headed in the general direction of the Xuu Family Courtyard. His timing was perfect; he would arrive just in time for lunch.

The area where the Xuu Family Courtyard was located was completely restricted. Without a special pass or permit, no vehicle could enter. After the taxi reached the general vicinity, Chen Fei got out and began a leisurely stroll toward the courtyard residence. No one stopped him along the way, as his identity had already been cleared.

When he pushed open the courtyard gate and stepped inside, a woman in her forties appeared before him. She was slender but exuded a remarkable, assertive aura. With short, ear-length hair and black-framed glasses, she was the very picture of an intellectual and a woman of power. This was none other than Old Master Xuu’s second daughter, the current Deputy Minister of Health, Xuu Peiyi.

Upon seeing Chen Fei, her face lit up with a joyful smile. ”Mr. Chen, please come in! You’re just in time; I was about to start making lunch. The old master is inside watching television. You can go right in.”

”I’m troubling you, Aunt Xuu,” Chen Fei said with an embarrassed laugh. ”I’m terrible at cooking, so I can’t be of any help.” Normally, when freeloading a meal at someone’s home, he knew he should at least offer to help in the kitchen, but he was utterly incompetent in that area. He was not a man who belonged in a kitchen.

”Nonsense. We’re more than happy to have you over for a meal,” Xuu Peiyi said with a smile, already wearing an apron as she headed toward the kitchen. ”Besides, if I actually let you help me, the old man would surely lecture me again. Go on, Mr. Chen. My father has been talking about you a lot lately.” Despite her high-ranking position, she handled all the cooking at home herself.

”Has that rascal arrived?”

Just then, Old Master Xuu walked out of his room, looking completely at ease. He was momentarily surprised to see Chen Fei, then his expression hardened. ”You’re one restless character. Do you have any idea that if I hadn’t made preparations beforehand, you’d be rotting in a Dragon Group cell right now? Would you still be here grinning so cheekily?”

”Heh, I just couldn’t hold it in! Who told that bastard Sunx to hire a foreign Assassin Organization to kill me? Did he really think I, Chen Fei, was an easy target?” Chen Fei at first feigned a look of righteous indignation.

However, the moment he saw the ”furious” expression on Old Master Xuu’s face begin to tremble, he shuddered and immediately changed his tune. Adopting a contrite posture, he chuckled, ”But I have come to deeply realize the error of my ways. Why don’t you calm down first, Grandpa Xuu? Heh heh. If there’s a next time, I promise! I will definitely discuss it with you in advance.”

”A next time?” Old Master Xuu’s eyelids twitched, and he rolled his eyes in exasperation. What did he mean by discussing it with him in advance next time? Was this little scoundrel trying to drag his old bones into the mess too?
