Medical Sage

”What Doctor Chen? Is there a Doctor Chen at the City Center Hospital?”

Feng Juan was puzzled by Gao Zhinan’s words. After all, due to her husband’s connections, she was quite familiar with the more prominent doctors at the City Center Hospital, such as Dr. Liu Changshan and Dr. Xu Zhenxing. They were authorities in their fields, renowned nationwide. Beyond them, however, she had never heard of a Doctor Chen.

It was Huang Feng, however, who froze. He seemed to remember something and hesitated, asking, ”Uncle Gao, could it be that Chen Fei... Doctor Chen?”

”Xiaofeng, you know Doctor Chen?”

This time, it was Gao Zhinan and Huang Tao’s turn to be surprised. The former nodded and said, ”Yes. Although Doctor Chen has only just started working at the City Center Hospital, his medical skills make even Dr. Liu Changshan and Dr. Xu Zhenxing feel inadequate. Moreover, regarding tonight’s situation... well, he might be able to save Old Huang.”

Having said this, he gave Huang Tao a meaningful look and stepped out into the empty corridor alone to call Chen Fei. It wasn’t that the call required privacy, but Chen Fei had warned them about this beforehand, and they hadn’t taken it seriously. Now that disaster had struck, both he and Huang Tao couldn’t help but feel embarrassed and that they had lost face.

”Old Huang, can we really rely on that Doctor Chen? Gao actually said he’s better than Dr. Liu and Dr. Xu. How is that possible?” Seeing Gao Zhinan step out, Feng Juan immediately started to complain.

Clearly, she didn’t believe this Doctor Chen who had appeared out of nowhere could be more skilled than the two ace chief physicians at the City Center Hospital, who were celebrated throughout the country.

”Shut up! Don’t talk nonsense.”

Just then, Huang Tao, lying on the gurney, his expression changed, and he shot his wife a panicked glare.

Feng Juan and Huang Feng were stunned. They hadn’t expected Huang Tao to react so strongly, especially when it was just a casual complaint from his wife. This rebuke made Feng Juan unhappy. ”What do you mean, Old Huang?” she demanded, her face stern.

Huang Tao’s mouth twitched, an odd look on his face. His mind was completely overwhelmed by what had happened earlier. The warning Chen Fei had relayed through Gao Zhinan, in particular, felt like a sword hanging over his throat, sending a cold chill through his entire body.

”That’s enough. Don’t speak carelessly,” Huang Tao said seriously. ”That Doctor Chen is not a simple man. If he agrees to come and treat me, you must remember not to be disrespectful.” That was all he said before wearily closing his eyes to rest.

Feng Juan was taken aback by his words and exchanged a look with her son. Both could see the profound surprise in the other’s eyes.

After all, her husband was the fourth-in-command of Northern Mountain City, the Executive Deputy Mayor, wielding significant power. Yet now he was showing such deference to a ’mere’ doctor, even warning them not to be rude. What on earth was going on...?

Outside in the corridor, Gao Zhinan took a deep breath and dialed Chen Fei’s number. However, after calling out, ”Doctor Chen,” he paused, unsure how to continue—or perhaps, too afraid to.

”Director Gao, what is it at this late hour? I’m already in bed,” Chen Fei’s groggy voice came through the phone.

Gao Zhinan started and quickly apologized, clutching the phone. ”I’m so sorry, Doctor Chen. I didn’t know you were already asleep. I deeply apologize for disturbing your rest.”

Clearly, after the earlier incident, his attitude toward Chen Fei had completely shifted from gratitude to a kind of awe. People have a natural fear of the unknown, and this moment was no exception.

”Director Gao, there’s no need to be so polite. Is there something you need my help with? If so, just say it,” Chen Fei asked, a bit surprised.

”It’s about Deputy Mayor Huang. He had an accident tonight...” Gao Zhinan finally explained.

”Deputy Mayor Huang? So it seems he didn’t take my advice. How bad is it?” Chen Fei sighed, not expecting this outcome, and asked casually.

”Doctor Chen, you really did foresee that Deputy Mayor Huang would... The situation is quite serious. We’re at the City Center Hospital. According to the doctors, his ischium is broken, and his sciatic nerve is damaged. If it’s not handled perfectly, it’s very likely...” Gao Zhinan trailed off.

From Chen Fei’s casual words, he could tell that the man had genuinely foreseen the deputy mayor’s accident in advance. The realization shook him to his core, leaving him dumbfounded.

”It’s just metaphysics; I only understand the basics. How about this? Have the hospital staff take Deputy Mayor Huang to an operating room. Have them go now,” Chen Fei said, detecting the shock and awe in Gao Zhinan’s voice. He didn’t elaborate, just chuckled.

”I’ll send someone to pick you up immediately!” Gao Zhinan exclaimed, overjoyed and ready to dispatch a car.

”Don’t bother with the hassle. I’m at the California Garden Grand Hotel. I can just get a taxi,” Chen Fei replied casually, finding the idea of being picked up troublesome.

It then dawned on Gao Zhinan that this incredibly capable Doctor Chen didn’t seem to own a car. But how could that be? With his abilities, forget a mere car—people would probably queue up to give him millions, even tens of millions.

But he had no time to dwell on it. ”Doctor Chen,” he said hurriedly, ”it’s quite late. Taxis are hard to come by at the hotel now. It’s better if I come and get you.”

Chen Fei paused, realizing he had a point. Since the City Center Hospital wasn’t far, he agreed. ”Alright then. Send someone to pick me up.”

”Okay, Doctor Chen, please wait just a moment,” Gao Zhinan replied before anxiously hanging up.

He returned to the examination room with a joyful expression. ”Old Huang, sister-in-law, Doctor Chen has agreed to come. He said to arrange for Old Huang to be taken to an operating room to wait. I’m rushing to the hotel to pick him up now.”

”Really? That’s wonderful!” Feng Juan’s face lit up. Although she had no idea who this Doctor Chen was, seeing how highly both her husband and Director Gao regarded him, she sensed he must be extraordinary. Hope for her husband’s recovery flickered to life.

”Xiaofeng, you go with your Uncle Gao,” the weakened Huang Tao spoke up. ”Remember, you must be respectful. Do you hear me?”

Clearly, like Gao Zhinan, after what had happened, he no longer dared to hold the slightest thought of underestimating Chen Fei. He even felt it was proper etiquette to have his son go along for the invitation, fearing any lesser gesture would be disrespectful and cause offense.

But again, his wife Feng Juan and son Huang Feng were stunned. They already knew their husband and father valued the man greatly, but they hadn’t expected it to reach this extent. Not only did Huang Feng have to go with Gao Zhinan to invite him, but he had to be especially respectful.

To be clear, the words ’be respectful’ were not something Huang Tao said lightly.

”Yes, Dad, I understand. Uncle Gao, let’s go,” Huang Feng said, a strange light glinting in his eyes as he followed Gao Zhinan out of the examination room.

”Old Huang, is that man really so impressive that you’re both treating him like this?” Once her son and Gao Zhinan had left, Feng Juan asked hesitantly.

As a university professor, while she wasn’t an expert in social intricacies, she had seen enough to understand a few things. Huang Tao’s current attitude was not that of a man dealing with a highly skilled doctor, but of someone facing a person he dared not offend.

Even when facing Secretary Mo, the undisputed number one leader in Northern Mountain City, Huang Tao was never like this. With him, he was always principled and reasonable, neither servile nor overbearing.

”Sigh, I’ll explain it to you when I have time. My head is a complete mess right now. I don’t know where to begin,” Huang Tao murmured, rubbing his forehead as he lay on the gurney.

…

Meanwhile, Gao Zhinan and Huang Feng went downstairs to the underground parking garage. They got directly into a sedan, dismissed the driver and bodyguards, and sped off toward the California Garden Grand Hotel.

”Uncle Gao, I think that’s Doctor Chen over there,” Huang Feng suddenly said, pointing out the window as Gao Zhinan drove near the hotel.

Gao Zhinan immediately perked up and looked where Huang Feng was pointing. Sure enough, there was Chen Fei.

”Doctor Chen.”

Gao Zhinan drove over at once and greeted him with utmost respect. The gesture caused Huang Feng, who followed him out of the car, to nearly turn to stone. Then again, perhaps he was already getting used to it.

Based on the attitudes of both Gao Zhinan and his own father today, his initial judgment of Chen Fei had been completely overturned. The dignified director of the Vast Sea Group, Gao Zhinan, was personally driving to pick someone up. His own father, the undisputed fourth-in-command of Northern Mountain City and its Executive Deputy Mayor, had insisted he come along and specifically instructed him to be respectful. All of this pointed to one thing: this young man known as ’Doctor Chen’ was anything but simple. He possessed immense influence—so much that Huang Feng could neither afford to offend him nor even consider him an equal.

”Young Master Huang?”

Chen Fei paused for a second when he saw him, then recalled that Huang Feng was Deputy Mayor Huang’s son. His presence here wasn’t surprising.

”No need for such formalities, you two. Saving a life is more important. Let’s go,” Chen Fei said as he got into the car, choosing a seat in the back.

Of course, Chen Fei himself might have been unaware of this, or perhaps he simply didn’t care. In China’s official and business circles, seating arrangements, whether at a banquet or in a car, carry significant meaning. Typically, the back seat is reserved for the leader or the most important person, while the front passenger seat is for a secretary or subordinate. Yet now, the distinguished director of the Vast Sea Group, Gao Zhinan, was personally acting as Chen Fei’s chauffeur. Meanwhile, the son of the Deputy Mayor, Huang Feng, sat obediently in the secretary’s seat up front.

The level of importance they placed on Chen Fei was self-evident.
