Medical Sage

Having received the legacy of a Cultivation World expert, Chen Fei was confident he could save Young Master Gao’s leg. This wasn’t just empty talk or a frivolous claim, but a feat he could genuinely accomplish. After resting for another hour, he got to work and successfully treated the leg. The onlookers were amazed, proclaiming it a miracle!

”Mr. Chen, this is my private number. If you ever need anything in Northern Mountain City, or if you require assistance, you can call me directly,” Gao Zhinan said, leaving his personal number with Chen Fei before hurrying away.

Additionally, he gave Chen Fei a Vast Sea Group VIP card as a token of his gratitude.

Once Gao Zhinan had left, Liu Changshan approached Chen Fei with a smile. ”Doctor Chen, Director Zhou has fired Zheng Yi,” he said. ”The director was dead serious this time. For your sake, he fired a doctor at the associate chief physician level. It seems he’s determined to keep a talent like you here!”

”Fired?”

Chen Fei was taken aback, not expecting the director, whom he had met only once, to value him so highly.

To think that for my sake, the director would instantly fire an associate chief physician. Honestly, he found it quite satisfying. He then replied cheerfully, ”So, Dr. Liu, about my employment...”

”Don’t worry, I’ve already arranged everything,” Dr. Liu said with a smile. ”An annual salary of three hundred thousand, plus a full benefits package—social insurance, housing fund, paid vacation travel... The only issue is that, due to regulations, we can’t offer you a Chief Physician position right away. However, the rest of your compensation package is equivalent to that of our chief physicians. You just need to be available for clinic hours twice a week, and there are no other strict requirements.”

”An annual salary of three hundred thousand, and I only have to hold clinic hours twice a week?” Chen Fei was stunned, as if he couldn’t quite process the tremendous shock.

My goodness! A starting salary of three hundred thousand a year, the special privilege of only two clinic days a week—same as the chief physicians—plus a full range of benefits, paid vacations, social insurance, and housing funds... This is like a pie falling from the sky! It’s a compensation package I never would have dared to imagine.

To put it in perspective, even his former mentor in the medical department of his teachers’ college only earned about six or seven thousand yuan a month at a proper hospital—a salary that couldn’t even compare.

Seeing Chen Fei’s silence, an awkward expression appeared on Liu Changshan’s face. He thought Chen Fei was dissatisfied with the director’s offer and hastily explained, ”Xiaofei, although the director can only offer you the Associate Chief Physician position for now, that’s really because of hospital regulations. I had to work at this hospital for three full years, earn some medical honors both in and out of the province, and make a name for myself before I received a special promotion to Chief Physician.”

He paused briefly before adding, ”However, aside from the rigid restriction on the position, the rest of the compensation Director Zhou is offering is based on the standard for us chief physicians. My own annual salary is only three hundred and fifty thousand.”

It seemed he never once considered that Chen Fei might be unhappy with the director’s offer. After all, even he felt his own skills were inferior to Chen Fei’s miraculous medical abilities. A truly capable person naturally deserved to make demands and receive a satisfactory package.

Hearing this, Chen Fei snapped out of his daze and hurriedly smiled at Dr. Liu. ”Dr. Liu, you’ve misunderstood. I’m not unsatisfied; I’m so overjoyed I’m speechless. You have to understand, I’m just a fresh graduate. To be able to start as an Associate Chief Physician at a top-tier hospital is more than I could have ever hoped for. How could I possibly be dissatisfied?”

”Don’t say that. With your nigh-supernatural medical skills, no position would be too high for you! Hahaha! Well, that settles it. Just let me know which two days you’d like to schedule for your clinic hours each week, and I’ll go make the arrangements.”

As he spoke, something else seemed to occur to him, and he smiled at Chen Fei. ”Xiaofei, I noticed you had some unpleasantness in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Department, so I took the liberty of having you transferred to our Cardiovascular Department. You don’t mind, do you?”

”Of course not, Dr. Liu,” Chen Fei replied, feeling it made no difference. With his current medical skills, as long as he had a set of Silver Needles, he could handle the vast majority of difficult and complex illnesses. As for prescribing traditional Chinese medicine, the hospital’s pharmacy was centralized anyway, so it wouldn’t be a problem.

Besides, Liu Changshan was the head of the Cardiovascular Department. With him looking out for him, there would be much less trouble in the future. Why wouldn’t he be happy about that?

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP...

Suddenly, the classic Nokia ringtone sounded from his pants pocket. Chen Fei froze for a second, shot Dr. Liu an apologetic look, and pulled out his phone. He glanced at the screen and paused. Why is this kid calling me?

”Xiaofei, what’s wrong?” Dr. Liu asked, concerned by his expression.

”It’s nothing, Dr. Liu. It’s a call from an old classmate and roommate. I’ll just take it and see what he wants.”

Chen Fei answered the phone. ”Hello, Slickhead! What made you think to call? Are you treating me to a meal? Great, where to? I’m on my way!”

Slickhead’s real name was Hua Zhinan. He earned the nickname for his smooth-talking ways, which made him popular with girls. He was the third oldest, or Old Three, in their dorm room. Rumor had it his family was quite well-off and owned a jewelry store, though only his roommates knew this.

”Damn, thinking about food again? Are you a pig?” Hua Zhinan’s annoyed voice squawked over the phone. ”Besides, wasn’t there supposed to be a class reunion tonight? Our great class monitor, Wang Kai, organized it. Word on the street is he’s latched onto some big shot—an Attending Physician in the Cardiovascular Department at the Municipal Central Hospital—who’s going to get him a job there!”

The call made Chen Fei recall that there was indeed a class reunion scheduled for today.

This class monitor, Wang Kai, had been a big deal back in their class. He was the vice president of the student union and the leader of the mountaineering club, with hobbies ranging from street dance to rap music. Countless younger girls at school adored him, and he was extremely popular. However, his character wasn’t great. Not only was he obsessed with his image, but he had also knocked up several female students and then immediately dumped them, earning widespread contempt.

After graduation, Chen Fei assumed he wouldn’t have any contact with someone like that. But unexpectedly, Wang Kai had called him a while ago to invite him to the reunion, all expenses paid. He had been swamped with job hunting at the time, so he hadn’t paid it much mind and quickly forgot. But now that Slickhead mentioned it, he realized the purpose of the invitation. So, that guy just wants to show off?

To be fair, for a medical graduate from a third-rate university like theirs, getting connected with an Attending Physician from the Municipal Central Hospital’s Cardiovascular Department and being offered a job there was genuinely an enviable achievement.

But now, he was an Associate Chief Physician at the very same Municipal Central Hospital—a position one full rank higher than that attending physician. Not to mention, his compensation was on par with a Chief Physician’s. In terms of benefits, he practically already was one.

At this thought, an unusual smile touched Chen Fei’s lips. He spoke into the phone, ”Slickhead, when are you planning to go this afternoon? Oh, and where is the get-together?”

”It’s at the Red River Restaurant over on the commercial street. You know it, right? Ah, never mind. How about this: just come find me this afternoon, and we’ll go together,” Slickhead suggested.

”Alright, sounds good,” Chen Fei agreed without hesitation. It had been a long time since they’d last seen each other, and he genuinely missed them.
