Medical Sage

”Hello, Uncle Liu. How are you? Have you arrived? Good, I’ll come out to meet you now. Please wait a moment.” After Wang Kai took the call, his attitude did a complete 180-degree turn. His previous arrogance vanished, replaced by a sudden servility that left everyone dumbstruck.

However, after he hung up, he regained his former airs in front of everyone, acting high and mighty as he carefully instructed them, ”Listen up, everyone. Don’t say that I, Wang Kai, forgot about you after making it big. Your opportunity is here. The man who called me is the uncle who got me my job at the City Center Hospital. His surname is Liu, and he’s an attending physician in the Cardiology Department. I specially invited him over today... All of you, be mindful later and don’t say the wrong thing.”

With that, he hurried out to greet his guest.

”WOW!”

”The Cardiology Department of the City Center Hospital! That’s a top department, and he’s an attending physician. To think that such a figure would be dining with us.”

”As expected of the class president. He’s incredible!”

”Make sure you all watch your mouths later. If you can make a good impression on him, it could be a huge help to you in the future!”

As soon as Wang Kai left, the private room erupted into a fervent discussion.

They were all medical school graduates and understood perfectly well the stature of an attending physician from a top department in a Grade-A Tertiary hospital. They were in complete awe of their class president; this was just brilliant.

”The Cardiology Department of the City Center Hospital, isn’t that where...” Only Slickhead looked at Chen Fei with a strange expression. He clearly remembered his friend had just told him he was now the deputy director of that very department.

”Shush, keep it down.” Chen Fei promptly interrupted him. He certainly didn’t want to be so conspicuous.

Besides, strictly speaking, today was his first official day. The attending physician probably didn’t know him anyway. Since that was the case, he couldn’t be bothered to say more and create unnecessary trouble.

”Oh, but that Wang Kai really has the makings of a bootlicker. Zhao Le, you’d better watch out. From the looks of it, he seems to have his eye on you, haha.” Slickhead quickly understood his friend’s intention and changed the subject, turning to tease the Art Commissioner.

”Pah, what nonsense are you spouting? I’m not interested in people like him,” Zhao Le retorted with a feigned pout, though she stole a strange glance at Chen Fei.

She had a peculiar feeling that between Chen Fei and Hua Zhinan, the former was the one in charge. But how could that be? Wasn’t Hua Zhinan the young master of Jinnan Jewelry? That made him a multimillionaire’s son!

Just then, the door to the private room opened again. A pot-bellied, bald, middle-aged man strutted in, brimming with arrogance. As for Wang Kai, he trailed behind the man, nodding and bowing, the very picture of obsequious flattery.

”Uncle Liu, these are all my classmates.”

While speaking to the pot-bellied man, Wang Kai shot a meaningful look at those present and announced loudly, ”Everyone, allow me to introduce him. This is my uncle, Dr. Liu. He’s the attending physician in the Cardiology Department at the City Center Hospital. Let’s give him a warm welcome.”

CLAP, CLAP, CLAP!

”Welcome, Dr. Liu! A warm welcome to Dr. Liu!”

Aside from a few students who looked displeased, the rest immediately responded with enthusiastic applause.

This was reality. Especially for them, all graduates of medicine, who naturally felt a sense of inferiority before such a high-ranking figure in their field. Some were even eager to curry favor, as many of them still depended on the medical profession for their livelihood.

After the introductions, everyone seemingly returned to their activities—playing, drinking, or eating. But many eyes remained fixed on the arrogant Dr. Liu. Wang Kai and a few other classmates with ulterior motives were already bowing and scraping as they followed him around, looking as if they wanted to get down and lick his heels.

Chen Fei silently shook his head. Their sycophancy was a bit over the top.

”Little Wang, who is this?!”

At that moment, the portly Dr. Liu suddenly locked his gaze on Zhao Le, who was seated next to Chen Fei and Slickhead. His eyes lit up, and he eagerly approached with a wine glass in hand.

Seeing that his lecherous uncle had taken a liking to Zhao Le, Wang Kai felt helpless but immediately played along. ”Uncle Liu, this is our former Art Commissioner, Zhao Le. She’s very talented. If you wouldn’t mind, could you help her find a good job too?”

”A job? That’s a small matter. Miss, did you also graduate from medical school? Interested in trying out at our hospital? If you are, perhaps we can find some time in the next few days to discuss it in detail.” Eyeing the fashionable and beautiful Zhao Le, the lecherous, bald Dr. Liu was instantly smitten, extending his fat, greasy hand with a smile.

”I’m sorry, Dr. Liu, but I’m quite satisfied with my current job. You don’t need to trouble yourself with finding me another one.” Zhao Le was utterly disgusted by this leering pig, but she dared not let it show and could only refuse him politely.

”What?”

Dr. Liu was incredulous. He never expected a mere graduate from a Third Tier university to dare refuse him. His face soured as he pressed on, ”Miss Zhao, is it? I am an attending physician in the Cardiology Department at the City Center Hospital. If nothing else, making you a permanent staff member at our hospital would be no problem at all. You need to think this through. Are you really going to refuse me?”

His words changed the atmosphere in the room. Everyone was repulsed by the damned fat pig’s directness, but they also felt a complex mix of emotions.

If they were given a chance to enter the City Center Hospital and become official staff, they would do more than just share a meal; they would be willing to pay an even greater price.

After all, that was the City Center Hospital, the largest Grade-A Tertiary comprehensive hospital in all of Northern Mountain City.

”You... Dr. Liu, please have some self-respect. I really don’t need you to find me a job,” Zhao Le finally said after a long silence, forcing herself to decline his ”kindness.”

She knew exactly what he was after, but if that was the price for a job, she truly couldn’t bring herself to pay it.

”Hmph! So ungrateful!”

Dr. Liu snorted coldly, his face turning grim. He glanced at the fawning Wang Kai and said with displeasure, ”I say, Little Kai, you’re a rather incompetent class president. Your Uncle Liu here kindly offers to find her a job, and she’s this ungrateful. Tch, fine, let’s just drop it.”

Detecting the serious dissatisfaction in Uncle Liu’s tone, Wang Kai’s expression changed. He immediately turned to Zhao Le and chided her, ”Zhao Le, you’re the one in the wrong here. Uncle Liu was being kind enough to find you a job. How can you be so ungrateful and refuse his goodwill? This is the kind of opportunity that many people would beg for. You should think it over.”

”That’s right, Art Commissioner Zhao. I think you should just go have that meal with Dr. Liu. This is a great opportunity; we’re all so envious!” the other classmates who were sucking up to Dr. Liu chimed in, pressuring Zhao Le with sarcastic, backhanded comments.

Under attack from Wang Kai and the others, Zhao Le’s expression turned to one of grievance. She couldn’t believe her own friends would turn on her like this, trying to sell her out just to please that damned fat pig.

”Hey, have you all said enough? Art Commissioner Zhao doesn’t want to have dinner with this fat pig. What business is it of yours? Got nothing better to do?” Just then, Chen Fei suddenly spoke up, his tone tinged with impatience.

”What did you say?! Chen Fei, what do you mean by that? How dare you speak to Dr. Liu like that! Apologize right now!” Wang Kai snapped, and the others joined in, ganging up on Chen Fei.

”Apologize? My ass! You think you’re so great just because you’re clinging to some fat pig’s leg? Forget you, even that pig isn’t worthy of my attention,” Slickhead added with a contemptuous glance.

As the heir to Jinnan Jewelry, he certainly had the standing to say such things.

”You... Chen Fei, Hua Zhinan, what is wrong with you two? How dare you speak to Dr. Liu like that? You’re courting death!” Wang Kai’s face flushed red with rage as he roared.

”Fine, fine, fine! I, Liu Zhichuang, never thought a couple of graduates from a Third Tier university would have such big mouths. Aren’t you afraid the wind will bite your tongue?” Dr. Liu said, his face dark as he sneered at the two. ”Go on, I’d love to hear what exalted positions you two hold. How much do you make a month?”

”A comparison? Sure!”

Slickhead nonchalantly tossed a Mercedes key from his pocket onto the table, eyeing Dr. Liu with disdain. ”I’m nothing special. I just have three or four jewelry stores under my name. Made a few hundred thousand these past two months. Just enough to buy a daily driver.”

”What!?” Wang Kai and Dr. Liu’s expressions changed simultaneously. The former had no idea his classmate of four years was a hidden rich second-generation kid. As for Dr. Liu, he was clearly shocked that Hua Zhinan was wealthy enough to earn more in a few months than he did in a year or two. His confidence instantly deflated.

”So, you’re a rich kid. No wonder you’re so arrogant,” he said, unwilling to back down. He then turned his sneer on Chen Fei. ”And you? What prestigious job do you have, young man? Do you also own a few shops and make hundreds of thousands every couple of months?”

”Me? I’m just a ’little’ doctor,” Chen Fei replied with a casual smirk. Indeed, he was just a ’little’ doctor.

”Oh, just a little doctor. You only graduated a few months ago, so you must be an intern, right? You probably make a thousand or so a month. I wonder if that’s even enough to afford a meal at the Red River Restaurant?” Dr. Liu sneered. He knew Wang Kai had only recently graduated, so he naturally assumed Chen Fei, also a doctor, was just some lowly intern.

”Oh?”

Hua Zhinan’s expression turned strange. Chen Fei simply raised an eyebrow, looked at the man, and suddenly chuckled coldly. ”Dr. Liu, is it? Since you’re from the Cardiology Department, you must know a Dr. Liu Changshan.”

”Of course I know Dr. Liu! But what’s that got to do with you?” he shot back, though he was unsure why Chen Fei was asking. He certainly knew Liu Changshan.

”Perfect. It just so happens that I know Liu Changshan, too. Why don’t you give him a call? Just tell him Chen Fei is asking for him. I’m sure he’ll tell you what to do next,” Chen Fei said, a cold smile playing on his lips, stunning everyone present.

”Hey, did you hear that? Chen Fei said he knows Dr. Liu from the City Center Hospital.”

”The nationally renowned cardiology expert?!”

”Isn’t he taking his bragging a bit too far? A man of that stature is a top-tier figure in the field. How could Chen Fei possibly know him!?”

As the murmurs filled the room, Wang Kai was the first to step forward, mocking him with a sneer. ”Chen Fei, have you lost your mind? Who do you think you are, claiming you know Dr. Liu? You must be dreaming.”

”Interesting. The youth of today are really something else. Is bragging all they know how to do?” Dr. Liu added with a derisive laugh. He absolutely refused to believe that Chen Fei knew the head of their department.

It was completely impossible. A worthless graduate from a Third Tier university? How could that be? He was dreaming
