Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 941: Chapter 942: Holding Her Hand

”Zhao Xin is injured? Is it serious?” Chiang Xiao’s heart chilled.

”Not trivial. You brought medicine, didn’t you?”

Chiang Xiao confirmed she had come in when he was about to look for a doctor, so Meng Xinian knew she definitely had medicine with her, and that her medicine was surely the best.

”I did!”

Meng Xinian walked very fast, his legs were long, and moving forward at such a swift pace, Chiang Xiao had to jog to keep up with him, but she didn’t call for a stop and he didn’t slow down.

As they moved further ahead, Chiang Xiao could already hear the sound of the river slapping.

The incessant rushing was alarming.

”The river has already overflowed, flooding the riverside vegetable plots in the village, and everyone has been evacuated. We’ve set up a makeshift rain shelter on higher ground using tarpaulins, almost four hundred people are squeezed in there, with the injured on a truck.”

By the time Chiang Xiao arrived at that so-called higher ground, her heart gave a sharp lurch.

The water on the other side could be less than three meters away from them!

If the river rose any more, this area would definitely be submerged too!

The rain shelter built on the slope was indeed very rudimentary, swaying in the wind and rain, as if it might be torn open at any moment. It seemed packed with people inside.

It looked like a refugee camp.

Those sitting outside were all wearing Supervisor Guard Uniforms.

They all looked extremely tired, sitting on the ground leaning on each other, some even snoring.

Being able to sleep in such harsh conditions showed how exhausted they were.

Some were reinforcing a corner.

A few cars were parked next to the rain shelter, providing some protection against the wind, blocking the brunt of it.

”Officer! Eh? Chiang Xiao? Is that you, Chiang Xiao?”

Standing in front of the rain shelter, a team member recognized Chiang Xiao, Gong Xinhe, who, together with Dai Gang, had visited her the time she went to the camp.

Gong Xinhe was only seventeen then, now nineteen, he looked a bit less youthful.

”I’m taking her to see Zhao Xin and the others, you stay here,” Meng Xinian ordered him sharply.

Gong Xinhe immediately stood at attention, ”Yes, sir!”

As he watched them walk towards one of the trucks, Gong Xinhe suddenly rubbed his eyes. Had he seen wrong? Had he really seen the Officer clutching Chiang Xiao’s hand tightly?

The back of the truck was also covered with tarpaulins, which offered scant protection against the wind, and it was still very cold inside.

The floor of the truck was covered with unfolded cardboard boxes, upon which lay three people, one of them seemingly better off, cushioned by a dark blue blanket and covered with a cotton-padded jacket.

A lantern hung overhead.

”It’s too cold to be alone, so we let them stay together,” Meng Xi said as he climbed aboard, pointing at the one covered with the jacket. ”This is a pregnant sister, check her first.”

He paused after saying that.

It seemed he had forgotten; he only knew Chiang Xiao had extremely effective medicine for external wounds and highly nourishing flower tea, but what about a pregnant woman?

This was not an injury, nor was it simply a matter of nourishment.

The sister had been complaining about abdominal pain earlier, and it was with great difficulty that she could close her eyes to rest, but he didn’t know how she really was.

Next to her was her husband, who had sprained his ankle while carrying her out of their nearly collapsed home; now his foot was swollen like a large bun and he stayed by his wife’s side.

Another was Zhao Xin.

”Little...,” he clenched his lip and looked toward Chiang Xiao, unable to forgive himself for his carelessness.
